Good advice on planting herbs in their own container. I made the mistake of planting too many in same container and I tell you it was a pain in my backside, so I won't be doing that from now on. You live and learn.

Your herbs are looking beautiful. It is very nice that you have shown us the progress of all your herbs over the last few years. Gardeners need to be reminded that perennial herbs need space and you have great examples of giving the herbs large pots to grow in. Thank you for sharing. By the way, I just planted my Lemon Grass down in my bog garden, directly in the soil. I am anxious to see how it does.

Nice video ! Thank you. I'm growing herbs for the second year and loving and learning as I go. Didn't know that oregano comes back and I re-planted some this year, so I'm sad about pulling out the roots, but I'm in a colder zone, so I'm not sure if they'd come back anyways. Also, growing basil, parsley, sage, thyme, rosemary, and lavender.

Do you just put one oregano plant in your container? Also do you cover them for the winter
@RainbowGardens
@RainbowGardens 5 жыл бұрын
Oregano spreads and gets larger each year, and I typically divide it, so most of the oregano plants in my container garden are from divisions. I live in zone 6b, and I do not cover my oregano but it is a good idea to do so if you are unsure of how cold it will get in the winter where you live.

Hi Donna! Do you reuse the soil from your pots? Its my first time gardening and my cilantro bolted because I didn't give it enough water lol but I'm growing more. I was wondering if I can re use my potting mix and if I can, how many times can I do that?
@RainbowGardens
@RainbowGardens 9 жыл бұрын
Betty Bonilla Hi! I reuse my potting mix all the time. :) If a plant has had some kind of disease, I do not not reuse it. It's nice to clean your pots between plantings too. You can also add a little compost to your mix or some fresh potting mix, just to freshen it up a bit. I have to but new potting mix every year, but I mix the new with the old.

I grew apple mint but couldn't find a good recipe for it. Is there a recipe you prefer to use apple mint over spearmint?
@RainbowGardens
@RainbowGardens 9 жыл бұрын
askiro jaro Good question. I prefer spearmint over the apple mint. So honestly, I have only used the apple in water and tea (only because it was more convenient for me). It has kind of a hairy texture to it. The spearmint is more smooth. I enjoy using mint in tzatziki sauce (recipe on my channel). I am also using it in Thai Basil rolls.

So my first frost date is Nov 13. I'm a garden noob so what does that mean for my Cilantro and Mint plant? I just checked and my Peppermint plant leaves are getting droopy. :( But in the bottom I see many leaves thriving and growing but the top leaves are getting droopy, kinda scared about this. Also my Cilantro finally germinated!
@RainbowGardens
@RainbowGardens 7 жыл бұрын
When my mint leaves get droopy, I cut it back so it can grow new leaves. Depending on how fast it gets cold where you live, the mint may not start growing a lot until the temperatures warm up a bit. Mint and cilantro survive the winters great where I live, but they are established by the time the cold weather hits.

Great job with the herbs. Do you store them in the garage over the winter ? What is the coldest temperature they can tolerate ? Right now I plant my herbs in my square foot garden but the pots look like a better option.
@RainbowGardens
@RainbowGardens 9 жыл бұрын
TRENNA INGALLS Hi! I enjoy growing some of my herbs in my SFG garden too. I try to plant herbs in 2 locations in case one does not do well due to insects or disease. Where I live the temps can get down to negative, but usually not below 0°F. It stays around 40 - 50°F in my garage. Yes, I have to move most all of the pots into my garage to overwinter (what a job!). The garage door windows (south facing) provide just enough sunlight to keep some of the herbs alive all winter. Most die back (french tarragon, mint, oregano, etc.) but they come back fine in the spring. I have left them outside and they came back too.However, one winter it got toooo cold and killed a few plants in pots. So now I move all the perennials to the garage.

We're doing our first garden this year including herbs (everything in containers) and I'm curious about the perennials. Our lemon balm is looking a little sad and I know it's one that will take over (as I think all of them probably would if given the chance) could it be that the pot is just too small? Do you have to split up those type or do they self-regulate their size to the container?
@RainbowGardens
@RainbowGardens 9 жыл бұрын
JudkinsJourney I do not have Lemon Balm, but if I remember correctly, it requires a lot of water. Water every day and see if it improves. I cannot look it up right now but isn't it part of the mint family? If so, it may also like a little shade.
