It’s crazy how uncommon this is. The owner of my company constantly talks about how everyone is on their own journey and is happy to give advice on career choices that is actually helpful to the employees who ask. I’ve heard several coworkers talk about how he recommended they work at the company for a few more years, specializing in a specific topic and then apply to other companies that value that specialization. The turnover is the lowest I’ve ever seen despite him occasionally actively promoting applying to other companies. It’s honestly shocking to me, and from the experiences relayed to me by peers, is almost unheard of.

(thinking) Okay, serious question, Mike. Would a person who values a balance of work to personal life time be able to work at your firm? Because after watching your various vids, you give me the impression that you kind of work "on call" 24/7 and I wonder if you expect that of your employees as well. If I were in my 20s today, I don't think I would sacrifice my personal time to "make it work" at the office--I'd put my 40 hours in and would refuse to answer any phone calls after I leave. Again, just curious and figured I'd ask for others in case they wanted to know but weren't sure if they could ask. I guess what I'm asking is, does your firm respect the "9-5" office hours or do you expect employees--particularly the important ones--to drop everything if/when an "emergency" pops up in the evening?
@MikeRafiLawyer4 күн бұрын
Fair question, thanks for it. Staff works 40 hours. If their hours are 830-530, they need to start working at 830, not 10 minutes before, and leave at 530, and not 10 minutes after. If they have too much work to accomplish during their work hours then either we need to train better to make them more efficient and effective or we need to reduce and reassign some of their responsibilities. If you are a non-salaried lawyer preparing for 3 important depositions, a trial, or something else extremely important, you will probably be working more than a 40 hour week. Example literally from today. We always have an “on call lawyer” responsible for new clients. (Last week was my week). We got a call at 4pm from parents who said their child was hurt in a truck crash and wanted to see if we could help. They lived about 2 hours from our office and wanted to meet in person. The on call lawyer immediately jumped in his car and drove there-no questions asked, that’s the expectation. He is driving home as we speak. Example from 2 weekends ago. Important witness we have been trying to reach for some time says we can meet with him Saturday at noon. Well, lawyer on that case was out there at noon on Saturday. Example from this moment. As I’m typing this a client texted me. I stopped writing this, immediately called him, and didn’t wait until the next day. This is what our clients deserve and one of the reasons we are so successful for them while delivering quality customer service. I’m the flip side, there are lots of lawyers with the slogan “one call, that’s all.” That always irks me, because their case is worth much more than 1 call. Sorry for the novel. Again, thanks for the question.
@thatjeff75504 күн бұрын
@@MikeRafiLawyer do not apologize for the novel. I think you did an excellent job of explaining the work ethic at your firm. And frankly, you sound like one of those rare "good bosses" to work for and my thought on the salaried positions--I presume the partners in this case--would work after hours because, "Hey, this is my actual business and I need to do whatever work that pops up to keep my business afloat." I had another question to ask but it doesn't fit within this topic and I feel like I've already bothered you with enough questions for now. If the topic does come up at a later time, I'll be sure to bring it up if I remember.

Hit me with me. Always looking for new video ideas. After almost 3 years of videos… I can use all the help.
@thatjeff75504 күн бұрын
@ It's probably something you don't want to cover, namely how a partnership works. From what I gather, a lawyer that you feel has a good fit with the firm can be made partner but that entails the person in question to "buy in" to the firm. Makes sense--he's essentially buying a share of the company. But that leads to other questions like: How do you determine what the buy-in price is? Does the firm have actual shares so that partners have percentages of the firm? Does the buy-in then go to the other partners or is it used for upgrading the firm itself? (extra office space, etc.) If a firm is allotted shares much like a corporation, does that mean someone with venture capital could buy-in without being a partner or a lawyer? Does this run like an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Program) and if so, does that mean hourly employees have the option to buy-in as well? (I find the ESOP model interesting due to its limiting of "vulture capitalists" swooping in to buy up valuable companies simply to squeeze every dime out of them before disposing of the corpse. Got some bad experience from that.) Anyway, sorry for the wall of text. Like I said, this was the reason why I didn't want to bring it up earlier but you asked. :D

@@andrewkarsten5268 mostly his videos about medical professionals. He has a video about how he got mad that his client’s doctor charged an exorbitant amount of money per hour to testify in court as if said doctor has nothing better to do (like diagnosing and treating patients other than his clients). He has a video about how he was questioning a biomedical engineer who said a wreck under a certain velocity can’t cause damage (in reference to the head). The engineer’s claim is backed by plenty of medical literature, and if you’d like, I can give the medical as well as physics explanation as for why it’s true. Mike decided to bring up the soccer ball study and throw it repeatedly at the engineer’s head to mock him in court and to say that the soccer ball study shows that MULTIPLE low energy impacts CAN cause damage. I’m not sure how repeated collisions applies to a car accident unless we’re playing bumper cars, but ok! He has a video about how he shamed a doctor who was a witness for State Farm quite often, and acted like he wasn’t a real doctor. Several videos later, he talks about a client whose doctor died and he hired a doctor who also tends to lean more towards legal work. I also had a run in commenting with him before about the helicopter video being too much. I brought numbers for industry standard flight costs and asked details about his case. He was all talk until it came time to show why his client’s helicopter ride was different than any other helicopter ride. There’s other videos outside the scope of the medical field, but it’s what I can’t stand seeing him talk about the most.

What is the most valuable thing that you learned in law school?
@MikeRafiLawyer4 күн бұрын
Law-wise: you have to be able to understand and argue both sides of every issue. And I don’t mean that you have to learn both sides of every issue so when you graduate, you already have that knowledge. I mean, you need to learn the process by which you can research and investigate to understand and argue various sides of the same issue. Life-wise: Your classmates and professors are going to be the people that help you in your business and in your life for the next however many decades that you walk this earth. Funny, you asked this today because I was looking back through videos, because I think I made a video once about what I would do differently in law school if I could do it all over again. I couldn’t find the video, or maybe I imagined that I made it, but I’m going to make that video and it should be out pretty soon. So stay tuned! Thanks so much for the question.
