42:20 Me sitting here watching the video… :( Anyway, the reason I included so much snake imagery in Athena’s design is because of her association with snakes, the same goes for Ares! Snakes are often linked to war in ancient greece. A gorgon, for example, symbolized protection, and the aegis-Athena’s shield and sometimes cape-also has a lot of snake motifs. And then we have Erichthonius, Athena's adopted son, who was a half serpent half man creature. Lots of snakies! And as for why Athena turns into a big snake… it’s the same reason Wet Hades, Zeus and Ares turns into big animals. I just think it looks cool! >:D But yhea, I kind of add al different kind refs from myths, anything with animals I'll cram it in!

39:28 In a comment on Hera's section, AnniFlamma talks about how Hera's constricted clothing is symbolic of how she's essentially trapped in her marriage to Zeus, and the negative affects he has on her, and the form where the clothes drop into loose robes is a reflection of what she could be, if she were free from Zeus. She lets loose for a moment to sing with Athena, and then is quickly rebound. I'm a big fan of this version of Hera, it pays respect to her postion as Queen of the Gods. She's larger than life, larger than the other Gods. Truly looks like the daughter of a Titan and a powerful ruler.
@Frostbite08Ай бұрын
I thought of something similar. Basically her putting the clothes back on because Athena's arguments weren't giving her a reason.

I think she also linked it to how actual veiling was done of married women (according to their class) in some parts of Ancient Greece vs the myth about Hera renewing her virginity each year.

The clam shell in Aphrodite's section of God Games is a reference to her creation (and the famous painting 'the birth of Venus') as she was spawned from Sea foam and a part of Ouranos that fell into the ocean. Also Hera being represented by a male peacock is mytholgically accurate as the peacock was Argus, a many eyed giant that she had a as a servent she was fond of. Upon his death she turned him into a peacock hence the many eyes/feathers. Also the best God Games animatic i've ever seen is by 'Neal Illustrator' here on KZbin. 43:45 About Athena’s snake associations, Athena has the snake as one of her sacred animals, since they represented wisdom from the earth, while owls gave wisdom from the sky. Plus Athena is often depicted with Aegis, the shield (or breastplate) which uses Medusa’s attached head to inspire fear and protect her! Also if you look at the animatic slowed down you can see the Medusa face, seen as Zeus attacks Athena, isn’t Athena’s face. It seems like it’s Aegis, which as a cool touch.

Anni's god designs deeply incorporate the god's associated animals or their sacred animals! That's why most of them have animalistic features and animal/monster forms. I'm an insane greek mythology nut so I'll point some stuff out for you guys!! ZEUS: Zeus's sacred animals are eagles and bulls. I think Annie's design for him is super clever because she gave him bull horns and his long hair braid emulates a bull tail. Zeus can also sharp-shift into both of these creatures. APOLLO: Apollo has MANY sacred animals because of his association with many aspects, which I think is why he doesn't have as clear animalistic features as the gods who only have one or two. But a lot of his animals do in fact have tails, which I think Anni took notice of and gave Apollo a very clever clothing design, so he has a long train of fabric that imitates a tail. I love that Apollo also has long hair that is tied up in their design, because Apollo was always depicted with uncut hair in Ancient Greek art to symbolize his eternal youth. HEPHAESTUS: I love that Annie included the most widely known Hephaestus origin elements, which is that he was thrown from Olympus because of his leg deformity, hence the prosthetic. I also could be wrong but I think Hephaestus's hair might also be homage to the ruff of a crane, which is one of his sacred animals ATHENA: Athena of course has the scared animal and most associated animal of an owl because she is the goddess of wisdom, but she is also a god of war and sacred animals for the war gods often are snakes, that's why in her big monstrous form, she is a winged serpent. Also! Athena's shield is called The Aegis, which is a special type of shield made from steel and animal skin and often bears the head of a gorgon (what medusa is). APHRODITE: Aphrodite's sacred animals are all birds, most notably swans and doves, as they symbolize love. I think Anni's incorporation of this outside of just having the physical animals in her domain is that Aphrodite can fly/float. Also Aphrodite's most well-circulated myth of how she came to be was that she was born from the sea foam, emerging from a giant clam. Also just as a quick random fact, Aphrodite is also a god of war. ARES: Ares is strictly a war god, hence why his imagery and sacred animal is a snake, and he's particularly associated with the more brutal, gruesome, blood-thirsty sides of war. And actually, Ares was not very highly regarded by most greeks. He was highly worshipped by Spartans, but outside of them, Ares was often ridiculed and denounced. HERA: Hera's sacred animals are peacocks and, like Zeus, bulls/cows. Anni's design of Hera also has cow horns and her peacock chest decorations! I also believe Hera's servants hurriedly covered up her revealing outfit because Hera is the goddess of lawful and sacred marriage, and it would be seen as "lewd and unacceptable" for a married woman to have such garb. Hera in depictions and statues is almost always fully and modestly clothed, sometimes even wearing a bridal veil, which I think Anni also gave homage to with Hera's bead veil! Also something I also didn't notice until I was doing y own research for god designs is that all of the gods Zeus chose were all on the Trojan side of the Trojan war, so I think he wasn't expecting them to give in to Athena so easily because she was aiding on the Spartan side of the war.
@IceQueen975Ай бұрын
An addition for Apollo: during the intro colored cutouts, the shape for him was a SKULL. Not the sun. It was in later Classical times that Apollo and Helios were synchronized (just as Artemis and Selene were). But Apollo from the start was the bringing of plague and disease to young men and boys. So that skull is more accurate then a sun and she's the only one who noticed and this makes me HAPPY. ALSO also, that train from his chiton in that cutout looks like a snake tongue coming out of the skull, a reference the Python, which he slew shortly after birth and took over the Pythian oracle. Anna just has a LOT of symbolism in her designs and nods to legit mythology and as an actual worshiper, this makes me VERY happy (and I've made sure to say so in her comment sections).
@iammatt3174Ай бұрын
Also just gonna point out Apollo's clothes going into the tail it turns black at the end and in the ending you can see him coloured and it has some black feathers to it so I assume it's referencing crows who are said to be his eyes when he's not present himself.

The shell/clam with Aphrodite is based on the famous painting „The Birth of Venus“ by Sandro Botticelli, which depicts her standing naked in a shell. It has to do with her origin/birth in Greek mythology. She came into being due to Kronos cutting off his father‘s (Ouranos) genitals and throwing them into the sea, where some *secrections* mixed with the sea foam and bam: Aphrodite emerges. Since the creation of the painting the shell symbolism has been used a lot with her. So yeah hope this helps lol :D

Someone also said in a comment elsewhere an Ares idea that I liked. Telemachus would be a model citizen in Ares eyes. He fights even though he has no chance to win. The fights for the honor of his family. He fights to protect his mother. These are all ideals that Ares exemplifies, which means that him dispraging Telemachus isn't a personal attack, he's doing what brothers do best and pissing his sister off, but he is doing it to force her into his domain, fighting with your heart, not fighting with your mind

I'm loving how Mortius and Casper commented on the visuals matching up with the audio, because it made me realise that Hera's big moves; throwing off the lcoak, the foot stomp by Athena, dropping to the floor, and the spin we get to see part of for a sec immediately after, matches up with the beat noises. *DUM* (pose/move), du-bu-dum, *DUM* (pose/move), last one being when Athena spins her away. And that trumpet-like sound when the servants tighten the cloth around Hera to restrain her again into her role.

So, Aphrodite is actually sea foam, or in other interpretations blood, from the Sky Titan Uranus! Backstory: Uranus and Gaia created all of the titans, but Uranus casted some of their "ugly" children into Tartarus. Gaia hated him for that and got her youngest son, Kronos to tie Uranus to the earth and cut him up. His goop spread across the ocean, and formed Aphrodite, hence the Aphrodite is sky titan goop! the reason why there are so many references to snakes on Athena is not so much to Medusa but to Athena herself: her sacred animals are the owl and the snake (which is why in memory she has the shape of a winged serpent) and in her statues she she was depicted wearing a special armor called the aegis which was decorated with many small snakes, while the shield does indeed have the head of Medusa, cut off by Perseus and given to Athena to thank her. If you see frame by frame in the animatic you will notice her raising her arm and the shield that opens showing the face of Medusa to defend her from Zeus' attack. For the horns of Zeus similar reason: his sacred animal was the bull in addition to the eagle.

So fun myth facts: first of all, the reason Aphrodite is in a clam shell is a reference to a famous picture called “the birth of Venus” which depicts Aphrodite being born from the remains of ouranos when he turned into sea foam Both Athena and ares got some serious snake imagery, which is a not to subtle nod to the fact one of the patron animals they share happens to be snakes. Athena is also often represented in imagery as the gorgon (aka what Medusa is) as she has two different myths associated with it: one with the cursing of Medusa and the other being her shoving Medusa’s head into her shield which retained its power. (I believe the shield one came first since Medusa was an established monster before her origin myth) If anyone has other fun facts please feel free to add.

The dove in Aphrodite’s bit is really funny as well because there would be no where for it to perch, it’s either floating or comically large. And how Heras cloak ties her arms to her side is representing her being trapped in marriage or something. I keep adding onto this, but the snake is one of Athena’s sacred animals. I also walk with a cane some days (not all), my mom has one arm, and both my mother and sister use wheelchairs (different disabilities). Getting around town with two wheelchairs was an adventure and a half! In Greek myth, Hephaestus was either born with a congenital impairment (club-foot or some other issue) or his legs were injured when Zeus cast him out of Mount Olympus, depending on the story. One of his many epithets is Ἀμφιγυήεις, which means "lame on both sides." So bravo for representing a disability for our blacksmith daddy... wait, that doesn't sound right...

42:45 actually anniflamma is really dedicated the the related animals and duties of the pantheon in her animations. The reason Poseidon is a horse is because he is god of horses and associated with horses. Hera is associated with peacocks, and she has horns, because Zeus is associated with eagles AND often appears to mortals as a white bull.

In terms of the snake showing up a bunch it’s because the snake is actually one of Athena’s sacred animals! Not quite as much as the owl of course but she is depicted with snakes around her or as details on her armour hence why she’s a weird owl snake thing.

20:40 so he has these horns and the tail because many people don't know but the Greek gods have more than one sacred animal and one of Zeus' sacred animals is the bull, just as you will see that Athena likes a snake since it is a sacred animal for her because she took care of a half-snake baby as if it were her son

43:52 I believe she is meant to be a chimeric kind of Amphitere, a european feathered dragon/serpent creature typically depicted with traditional bat-esque wings. I say chimeric because she seems to be a blend of Owl and Snake, which makes sense given that both have and are associated with wisdom/knowledge/divine power in some form or another.

Talking about Hephaestus's depiction in Anniflamma's, the myths actually depict him gaining a limp after Hera throws him down from Olympus. But still, love the representation for disabilities so I'm not going to argue with it. Outside Hephaestus, there's a whole bunch of sacred animal representation with the other gods. Aphrodite is surrounded by doves, Ares and Athena (both gods of war) transform into snakes, Athena also transforming into an owl, Hera having male peacock feathers for creating them from the Hundred-Eyed Man, Argos, and the "devil horns" on Zeus are actually bull horns, hence why he transformed into a bull hybrid and also an eagle. Also, live-action Percy Jackson please!

This is my own theory, but I'm sure other people have thought about it before: Anniflama's gods always have at least one animal trait, either through constant transformation or a permanent feature even in their human form. Athena, however, looks completely human except for moments of great tension. My theory is that originally all gods spent more time in their bestial form, with Athena being some sort of owl-winged serpent. However, she took the form of a human to interact with mortals, and the longer she did, the more human she looked, less scaly/feathery. The other gods are more distant, so some of them retain animal features (ironically, Aphrodite, Ares, and Hephaestus represent human aspects of life, so they also look very human) As for Medusa, Athena's shield has her face, so when she needs protection the shield activates, when inactive she has it hanging like a necklace!

I love your reactions! I was so excited to see your opinion of We'll Be Fine. Gigi's version seriously made me cry! I do want to mention something (I guess in Telemachus's defense). When he said "I don't know who your friend is," we kind of laughed at how dumb he must be that he saw Athena staring at the tapestry and still couldn't figure it out. But I think Gigi did something very interesting with her animation. We see Telemachus come up behind Athena to look at the tapestry as well, and when he follows her and sings the line, his eyes shift back toward the tapestry. I think he knows she's talking about his father, but he was a baby when his father left. He really doesn't know "who your friend is" or "what he's like" because he doesn't know his father. He only has stories. So he can't offer comfort in regards to Ody, but he does provide comfort by telling her how she makes him, Telemachus, feel. Maybe I'm reading too much into the animation, but I imagine a child separated from their parent really wouldn't "know" them. And in both Legendary and Little Wolf, he never refers to Ody by name or as "father/dad" it's more distant. He says, "is it you I'll find" and "Cause I'm stuck with your stories / But no clue who you are". I think "I don't know who your friend is" is an echo of "But no clue who you are." Just some rambling thoughts lol. Maybe I just wanted to protect our sweet boy.

I saw a comment on Heras part when Anni used the Demo that said that They felt like the fact that Hera is so bound up is a symbol of her marriage to Zeus, she is truly happy for a moment when she is unbound but is quickly made more downtrodden again and bound in clothing. Also The Peacock is Her sacred animal and she set the Watchman Argos to guard Zeus’ lover Io as a prisoner, Hermes put Argos to sleep and killed him so Hera put his hundred eyes on the male peacock, hence why her outfit is inspired by the male peacock.

I highly highly recommend watching overly sarcastic productions: the Trojan war to learn about what came before the Odyssey and get some good insight into these gods. The reason the war began is actually way more complex than just Helen being abducted. And it’s at least partly Odyseus’s fault. It’s very funny and informative, both of the actual mythology and the history behind it. Actually a reaction to that would be the greatest thing ever, but I would highly recommend it either way.

The eagle and the bull forms of Zeus are references to when he transformed into them in different myths. Pretty sure Ares's sacred animal was the snake, and he and Athena are siblings in similar domains, represented by them both having Quick Thought for example, so that's why I think they both have a Snake form, as well as the reference to Medusa. As for Athenas form in the flashback, her being so an owl creates a sort of Feathered Serpent, like the Quetzalcoatl from Aztec mythology, although I do think Greek mythology also had winged snakes, but don't quote me on that.

Edit: I missed the premiere but after watching the live chat for a second: an owl snake/snake owl is similar to the eagle bull that was Zeus. Less of an actual creature/myth rep but more of a combination of their sacred animals. It’s very Greek after all. Take the head from one thing, the body from another and the tail from another lol

39:17, I think the covering of Hera represents her relationship with Zeus. She wants to leave the relationship but can’t. She is aware that divorcing Zeus would be bad PR for her brand as “The Goddess of Marriage” (something that regular women who go through as well when contemplating leaving their toxic marriages) and cause Mt. Olympus to go into chaos(we all know how Zeus reacts when things don’t go his way). 😢

Two things i noticed. One, the fact Ares was sheilding the other gods with his cape when the strike happened. The second is that he was worried about Athena being dead. It feels like it points to him and athena while rival gods, do value the other. Areas as the god of the soldier, brave and fearless, athena the goddess of strategy and the general of sorts. I find it very interesting because usually Ares is depicted as a very maligned god. And while hes not a hero here he does make a decent arguent in regards to his sacrifice of his men, to Ares that would be a deeply cowardly move.

In God Games, Aphrodite is seen with a shell because she was born from the blood that was dropped in the scene from Ouranus. In paintings, Aphrodite is born out of the sea from a clam shell. The painting is called: "The Birth of Venus."

I love that Are's music is so oppressive, it's very fitting too, very militaristic as well, also I'm not 100% sure but I'm pretty sure that Are's instrument is a marching flute, which both fits him and is a nice detail since Spartans would march to war, following the sound of the flute, so it'd be a pretty good nod to both Ares and Sparta.

Athena's association with snakes shows up again in the myth of Erichthonius. He's a child produced after a thwarted attempt by Hephaestus to force himself on Athena. She then put the baby in a basket/box which she gave to the daughters of the king of Athens to look after, but warned them never to look into it. They did, and saw either a snake coiled round a baby, or a half baby half snake depending on which source you read. Erichthonius then went on to become a renowned king of Athens.

So a fun fact about the horse & the infant song is that all the named soldiers are heroes with their own stories of how they got home. One speciefylly cool one is Nero fullname Neoptolemos son of Achillius. Who was birthed before the trojan war started and was scouted by Odyssius himself to join the war after his father's death. Nero ends the war killing the Hector's infant son and taking his wife Andromache as his concubine. At most Nero is 13 years when the war ends
