I've been through a few hurricanes, tropical storms and Nor'easters. In the past (when I was younger, in my 20's and 30's), I'd generally enjoy them, as long as nobody is hurt or killed and damage is minimal and if those conditions are met, the main thing I hate about them is losing power for days at a time. Hurricane Isabel in 2003 (I think), knocked our power out for about 2 weeks if I recall correctly. But like I said, the main thing is that nobody is hurt or killed and damage is minimal.

We got a lot of weather down here, but the tornados caused rolling power outages (even for me, and I live on a first responder grid with 2 hospitals, a fire house, and a special needs emergency shelter). For reference, during Hurricane Ian I was working from home while the storm was raging outside my house and I never lost power. The Milton adjacent tornado power outages took out my fiber optic internet the Monday after Milton didn't hit us. It took them 3 weeks to get me back up and running. But Tampa, Sarasota, Venice, Clearwater, and further inland; they got hit really hard this time.

I felt the exact same way and I was especially pleased that I only had a few shingles taken off the roof. That was easily repaired. Along with being happy, I was thankful. Thankful that pretty much everyone I knew came through unscathed. It was much worse here when Charley rolled through back in 2004, and then got followed in quick succession by Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne. Milton's track was almost the same as Charley's, in that they both went pretty much down the I4 corridor; but Charley just absolutely trashed the neighborhood we were living in at the time as well as the rest of Orlando. Hours of 140 mph or more winds with 22 inches of rain, but luckily, no wind damage and water came right up to my house, but not in. These recent storms concerned me even more because the tornado warnings were coming in so frequently I had trouble knowing if it was old or new. You always take tornado warnings seriously, especially if they say rotation detected.

That's the typical pretty much nothing that happens inland from an indirect hit and no tornado. But it is best not to be complacent because every now and then one won't fizzle out quickly over land and come right at you. That can be a memorable experience. One cool thing I saw once was all the leaves ripped off the trees and turned into that green paste stuff that builds up on the bottom of powered lawn mower. About an inch accumulated on one side of the house's stucco paint job. I haven't had the experience of being on the wrong side of one near where it makes landfall and never will willingly.

I live in south Louisiana and have been through many hurricanes. We stock up on canned and dry foods. Refrigerated foods aren’t good stock if there’s an extended power outage. We do canned meats, vegetables, and fruit. Dry includes cereal (grits or oatmeal), and bread. Water is much more important than alcohol. Hurricanes spawn tornadoes. Though you may be further inland, there is still the possibility of tornadoes. Modern hotels are generally safer since they have generators. Flying debris can be deadly dangerous.

I have been through many, but never anything really strong. If you are in the path of one and you are near the beach, even a weak storm will scare you. Zeta passed over where I was temporarily lodged in 2020. I was about 3 miles from the beach in Gulfport in a motel room on the non windy side of the motel. I was confident that the motel would withstand the storm, and it had already gone through NOLA, but it was scary.

@MoreAdamCouser I've been subscribed to you for a little while. You make me laugh.😁 Well, I should have wrote you earlier to tell you don't come to Florida during hurricane season. 😜 But seriously I live an hour west of where you were staying. Tornados ripped through my neighborhood. One uprooted a large oak tree in my yard barely missing my neighbor's house. I was without power from 7:15pm Wednesday night and didn't get it restored until Sunday 6:30 a.m. . We had a gigantic oak tree come down from across from house blocking our street. Crews didn't get by until 2 days later to cut up the tree & push it to the side. Our neighborhood still looks crazy with piles of brush from everybody's yard everywhere. I've lived in Florida on & off my whole life {60+}. I'm very used to hurricanes. We do love to throw hurricane parties. 😜😂

When buying emergency supplies. Buy shelf stable things too. If the electricity goes out so does the refrigerator and freezer.

I was in North Carolina visiting my daughters when Milton hit. Not bad in Raleigh at the hotel. I know it did a lot of damage to the west of us. Glad you were ok.

I grew up in Florida, all my family still lives there. Then lived in New Orleans, so between the two, have been in many many hurricanes, also living in Dallas, have also dealt with many Tornadoes!

My cousin lives in Orlando and he’s a wild boy never worries about hurricanes and just sees it as another thing. I always call to check in on him. I feel like a lot of Floridians are desensitized to it because it does happen so often. Honestly respect to them.

I 'm so glad I live in Michigan and don't have tl experience any huricanes. The worst we get are snow storms in the winter but at lease our homes are still standing.

You're in my backyard! Orlando area had some damage but most of the damage was done on the west coast of Florida with the very high winds. Also, I was in Ireland back in April and was in some of the towns you showed in your video of where you live!

I live between Tampabay Area and where Hurricane landed. Born and raised in Florida. Hard to evacuate when thry cover whole state. We hunker down and put up metal shutters and prepare for power outage which we were out for 5days. We are used to these every year but always devastating.

we lucked out in Orlando , Ian cost mass flooding in Orlando we lost both cars and home its all good now. but each hurricane is a unfamiliar enemy you dont know what you get till it passes even if it is a low grade hurricane.

Glad to see you were all safe (minus the lost hat) and that it wasn't as bad as in other places. I was honestly worried when I heard you were out there at the time but overall I think you can consider it like a preview of what a strong storm can do, few humans get to have that experience in person, not bad for a first trip! Thanks for sharing your experience with us ☺

Going through hurricanes sucks. I’ve lived in Florida my entire life. Lived in Orlando, since the late 1990s. The 2004 hurricane season was rough (Charley, Frances, and Jeanne). Didn’t have power for weeks. Had a lot of damage from Irma. I’m thankful it wasn’t worse from Milton. But, it was a scary night.

My friends in Orlando lost power for a while and had a few branches down. Orlando really didn’t get it luckily.

my wife, MiL, and I hung out at my grandparents house for this one, middle of pinellas park. lost like a half dozen shingles and near 48 hrs without power. we did quite well compared to the people closer to the coast.

I live in Bradenton, I only just got power back on Wednesday. My apartment wasn't too bad but there's def some damage around us. I went through Hurricane Maria as well by the way, if you want POV of a Cat 5 hurricane I have some stuff on my channel. Glad you got to experience something you won't back in the UK though, and come out safely.

Your feelings of being happy are perfectly normal. You are happy you and your family made it through safe. Rejoice and be merry! A couple years ago Ian's eye went right over my parents place. When I went down to help them out, I was shocked by how lucky they got. They only had a small water leak and had to replace their AC unit, but when I rounded the corner to look at their neighbor's place it had looked like an atom bomb had went off.
@rhov-anion2 ай бұрын
Being happy that your family is safe is legitimately a great reason, especially as you acknowledge that it could have been much, MUCH worse and was deadly for many. This is why, when Americans warn "Don't come to X-state during X-season," we mean it. I don't know HOW many times I had to warn my German cousins, don't come to Texas in the summer. "Oh, but that's when all the cool things happen!" No! No, it's not! The festivals in the southwest are all in the spring FOR A REASON. It's the only time the weather is manageable be to outdoors for more than an hour. Heat stroke is real and deadly, and it messes you up for life. Dunno how many times I had heat stroke as a kid, and now in my 40s my guts shut down if it gets above 85°F/30°C, a spring day in Texas.

Be happy, you experienced the edges of a small hurricane with no major damage. I’m in western North Carolina where hurricane Helene came through a few weeks ago. It’s oct 31 now and fema and other relief agencies are still helping victims here and in Georgia and eastern Tennessee rebuild. Next time please put flashlights and batteries in your supplies because the power usually goes out.
