Yeah I think the problems not so much the pairing as it is the fact that 8 people advance - these things cant go together. The swiss system is fine to decide one winner but in this format, it would be better to draw the matches based on seeds beforehand . If there was an outright winner in 13 games, then we wouldn't have seen 7/8 5 move draws on the top 4 boards in the last 2 rounds. I dont know what Naroditsky was doing though, a draw basically eliminated him yet he still took it without even thinking about playing a proper game - the tiebreak system is a mess too, an SB score (the sum of the scores of your opponents that you beat + half the scores of your opponents that you drew with) would make much more sense than whatever this random system is

This format was TERRIBLE in my opinion. 188 players and 180 of them going home after only 13 games is terrible treatment of the many players that never would have a chance at being the last 8. But that is as expected from FIDE that care very little about the players that are below top 20 in the world. The old format was way better and I totally agree that is should be at least 21 games and even better 23-25 games in my opinion. It was also obvious from the interview that Levi had with Magnus that Magnus prefers the old format as well.

@@songoku-jx3cb . Given how much prep players do these days classical matches need to be reduced to either 60mins + 30mins or 90 minutes per side and two games per day. That way players can play more games in less time. Imagine a world classical championship match of 18-20 games done over the span of two weeks or less. It would be a lot more difficult to draw every game and force tie breaks as they do now and the match wouldn't drag on for 3 or more weeks.
@songoku-jx3cb3 күн бұрын
@@MrSupernova111 yeah but the problem with 90 minutes is the match will go heavily in the favour of the player with white . Was the format change really at the request of Carlsen??? I got no idea, but he usually have bad starts at tournaments, and this favors those with good starts. It also filters out so many players early on, when he has always seen more games as better to determine the best.

It’s principle to refuse to play a cheater, but it’s something else to refuse to play a cheater when you’re very certain they’re not going to cheat that particular game. If you’re really that anti cheating, you’d take that opportunity to crush the cheater, but why would you still refuse to play? 4 words: what, if, I, lose?

It's hard to disagree with Hikaru's own feelings, so I'm sorry if this opinion seems disrespectful, but I think Hikaru thinks too much about age. Of course it's a thing, but more about motivation and the will of improve. Maybe is some bias that comes from when he was younger. Sasha is older, Gelfand, Lenier... I think the main problem manifested in this tournament can be solved, is about mental state, overthinking. When he plays online, he usually premoves without second guessing how to respond to an expected move. He never second-guesses his calculations, even if he blunders some time scrambles against players with great tactical awaresness. Playing less over the board surely doesn't help, I hope he can find peace in the Freestyle, he's still the FIDE World Chess960 Champion!

Danya 9th so out of the day 2? Yeah that pisses me off. I was rooting for Danya to win. Especially because of all the bullshit he's gone through this past year. He had a great tournament reagardless, hopefully it gives danya some peace of mind and he can move forward and not let the bullshit accusations affect his mental health anymore. I hope he realises that he could become the Fide world champion on all formats and people like Kramnik would try to drag his name in dirt.
