I spent my first 40 years in Fairfield. Fairfield East, Fairfield Heights, Smithfield, and then moved to another city all together. There used to be speciality shops in the Fairfield CBD but now the place is full of $2 shops, pawn shops and payday loan outlets which is a reflection of the city itself. I'm sure the pubs and hotels entire trade comes from poker machines because demographically, I couldn't imagine anyone entering those establishments and ordering a cold beer. It's criminal what has been done to Australia, the UK, US, Europe, Canada, etc. Yet it is ONLY those countries..

its just going down hill. i remember living in villawood, nearly fairfield, 20 years ago, neeta city was amazing, you still had decent shops, like bigw, bing lee, the chase was full with food stores, blockbuster and video eazy nearby, you had a mcdonalds inside neeta city and another across the street (old style), you had hoytz cinemas at fairfield forum, the kmart use to be good, and it had lots of store. fast forward 15-20 years, its a dump, so many closed stores, neeta city is a baron wasteland, the top half is full of closed or garbage stores, nothing really to do, only tabacco, coffee,,cheap clothes and kebab stores around every corner, its basically turned into the middle east. its a shithole

One of the quieter days it seems. Usually can be quite busy and full of shoppers and locals congregating on the streets and cafes. Nice video of the fairfiekd city center. One of the larger CBDs within the Sydney region.

An interesting video. I grew up in the Fairfield/Canley Vale area in the 50s and 60s, and left in the mid 70s, although I have come back occasionally when visiting family. There is a much different vibe happening in the city which is so different to my memories, but many of the old places I used to frequent are still there but with different stores. Fairfield City Council is to be commended on their efforts to beautify the city and to provide amenities for its citizens.

You should have walked down Harris Street to show the historic School of Arts buildings, from 1896 and 1911. Also it would have been nice if you had turned and shown the Court House and the Police Station as you passed them on the other side of the road. I hope you come again to Fairfield and perhaps do a montage of some other shopping centres, or areas of interest, such as the Camsley City Farm in Abbotsbury, the Museum in Smithfield and the vast industrial areas of Wetherill Park and the beautiful natural parklands in Bossley Park. The suburbs of Fairfield vast development, since the 1974 release of green belt land, shows an even greater diversity in housing styles, reflecting the multi national population. From the humble post war fibro 3 bedroomer, to monumental mansions being built in the late '90's and with dual development of 2 Houses on the one block, duplexes, knock down re builds and high rises now in the outlying suburbs, the face of Fairfield is changing rapidly, and the few streets you show, no way reflect the real Fairfield and its people.

So different to when I lived and grew up there in the 60s, 70s and 80s. Very much a country town in the 60s. It was always multi racial and the new migrants did settle in. Just seems 'over developed' now.
