30 years ago Montana had about the lowest Utility rates in the Nation and a Power Company with no debt. The GOP won the majority on the PSC, they “deregulated” to allow the power to be bought and sold on the open market. The PC took on a ton of debt to enter into the fiber optic business. Long story short, Montana Power went bankrupt and we now have the 4th highest rates in the nation. It only took Goldman Saks 4 years to do all of that.

@@chiquita683 a natural monopoly is an industry where the first firm in the industry has an overwhelming advantage over other firms to join the industry. It is unfeasible to have multiple utility companies serve the same area as that would require duplicate infrastructure. Instead of a private utility, the utility should either be owned by the government or the community. I live in Northern California where my supplier is PG&E. They are responsible for starting multiple wildfires, a gas line explosion that turned into a missile, and they shut down all power for my family multiple days at a time without reason (deferred maintenance). They also have done multiple wage hikes and it is becoming increasingly more difficult for people to pay the bill, all just so the ceo can buy another yacht. This is what happens when you privatize a natural monopoly.

The Arizona Corporation Commission voted to approve a rate hike for APS customers. It was approved 4-1 with Commissioner Anna Tovar as the sole “no” vote. The increase took effect on March 8 and will increase rates by about $10 to 12 per monthly bill. The commissioners also voted to approve a controversial amendment adding a monthly charge of $2.50 to $3.00 for residential customers with rooftop solar systems. The extra fee will allow users to plug into the grid. Except my bill for July August and September went up $200-400 dollars. Not the $10 to $12 dollars!! My July bill was $647.00!! Commissioners have constantly sided with corporations - not customers!!

Indeed... 😢 The hard part is, that big investors wont invest in utility markets where they can't make as much money. So when limiting potential ROI, less money will flow into the state, and as such, there will be less for other public works. BUT it will be temporary, and greed will eventually give-in. Rate payers save money for a time, but it requires indirect related costs. I think it's worth it, as someone who's lived in AZ, NV, and now CA.

AND the list is extensive: For profit utilities, meaning electrical / gas etc., for profit WATER and SEWER UTILITIES, for profit healthcare, for profit insurance, for profit medicines, for profit communication services, for profit education, for profit basic housing, and it's all taxed, then we pay it with our already taxed money. I've been screaming about corporate greed, CEO salaries AND PAY OUTS when they get fired! They're making an average of $33,000 an hour, for a 40 hour week. While an employee making $30 an hour, is eligible for government subsidized assistance for food, housing, medical care. etc; because it's NOT A LIVING WAGE. Meanwhile every day people cannot buy a home, because they can't save for a down, because of the cost of living AND THE FACT that their RENT is NO DOUBT, almost 50% of their income. So adding insult to injury, the masses are in an ever widening division for BASIC QUALITY IF LIFE. It used to be DAD could work a REGULAR JOB, raise a family while Mom stayed home and made the family unit a UNIT.....his salary bought food and clothes and a house and a car and a vacation to grandma's EVERY summer! Kids could work to go to school WITHOUT owing TENS of THOUSANDS upon graduation. Mom could take a job here and there for Christmas money or Dad could grab some overtime. THIS WORLD HAS GONE INSANE and it's ten times worse after COVID, which seemed to give every business a reason to take an interest-free and / or a forgiven loan, while recording record profits AND SALARIES FOR MANAGEMENT AND PROFITS FOR SHAREHOLDERS. No one wants to give that up and come back to Earth......It has gotten INSANE.

@@eh3477 I’m on the budget plan. The previous twelve month usage is totaled and I pay 1/12th of that each month. My usage during the winter is very low because I don’t need the heater. I’m currently paying $122/month. If I wasn’t on the budget plan my winter bills would be about $40/month but the summer bills would be over $200-$300/month. Edit: For comparison the previous 12 months I paid $91/month. My cost increased $31/month. a 12% rate increase = a 3x high electric bill? that some wild math!

This is shocking. For the summer I lived in Arizona in 2008, my electric bill was usually less than $50/mo. It was cheaper than the electricity bills with similar conditions near Death Valley. Now, it's the opposite. This is nuts.

This is not a republican/democrat issue. California is democrat and has the 2nd highest rates in the country even with having solar. In fact they are making it more expensive to put up solar.

I’m going to give another side. I live in Phoenix metro area & only saw a small increase this summer. On average, my summer electric bill is around $150/mo for a 1200 sf home. But the 8 non-summer months, it averages $45/mo. Yes it’s more in Summer, but not crazy like they’re suggesting and three seasons it’s peanuts compared to other parts of the country. Pick your poison I guess. Hot summers but no snow.
