The reason you take the rings OFF your completed and cooled canned items is so if the lid does, by chance, come unsealed……if it has a ring on it….you wouldn’t know soon enough that it spoiled and not to eat it! Just a quick tip about Frozen milk...It is amazing freezing milk then letting it thaw/melt into a pot. This is called Freeze distilling and World Barista champions often use this method and I use it regularly in my coffee instead of regular milk or cream. The fats will thaw quicker than the water so it concentrates the flavors. Just don't let it completely melt as the point is to remove water content. Also great for other milk needs.

Raspberry icecream is fantastic! If you freeze dry raspberries you can powder them in a grinder and store the powder. That will use up a massive amount of berries of any kind. Raspberry powder in cake mix will make a tasty raspberry cake or cupcake. You can make raspberry raisins. Dried fruit run through a meat grinder and mixed with a bit of nuts and just enough honey to hold shape make good fruit balls that give you lots of energy and multiple servings of fruit from a golf ball sized serving. The more types of fruit added the tastier it is!

a note on water bath canning - no reason you can't do it outdoors on a gas burner or even a fire pit or charcoal grill. We do that for large batch canning. We set up a folding table with cafeteria trays lined with dishtowels for the jars. It allows us to run much larger water baths than I can run stove top, and we don't heat up the house.

1) You can cut the acid in your tomato sauce by cooking in one shredded carrot per pot of sauce. The carrot cuts the acid and because it is shredded, the carrot will "disappear" into the sauce. 2) Upright freezers can pop open if you lose power long enough for the temp to rise high enough to break the seal. You do NOT want to have to clean that up. Stick with the chest freezers.
@JS-px3et2 ай бұрын
So true. Happened to me. Lost ½ beef and whole pig when power was off. Also, upright freezers allow the cold to "flow" out every time the door is opened. A chest type keeps the cold in place.

Mice will make short work of plastic buckets - I used to raise them so I know. I'm glad you vermin-proofed your basement but I would still store those on a higher shelf + turn them all the way around for an inspection regularly. It's not that they can't climb to a higher shelf, but having them on the ground it's dark around and behind them and there are more angles they can attack it from so placing it higher up would slow them down. As for checking them, the hope is that you catch it partway through their efforts. Mice can fit through a space the width of a pencil!

All yould need to maybe do would be add some insulation on you haven't done so yet with. Love your cellar lol aka basement. Miss having a basement up north....back in Texas for over a decade now and all we have are built in root cellars if you can find a German or czech built home from late 1800s to early 1900s....or your typical "storm shelter" for tornadoes which i believe theyd have for sure used as cold or root cellars

This is my dream! I live in the city but I bought an old house, built in the 30s, and its on a much large lot than newer builds. My backyard is large at about 1/4 acre, or 10,000 square feet. Has a couple of large live oaks and a 300 square foot shed with running water and electricity. Last year we put in a pond and 4 raised beds and grew some veggies, but not a lot. This year we are turning the majority of the yard into a veggie garden, medicinal herb garden, and wildflower beds, putting in 1 bee hive, and building a chicken coup with 3-5 chickens. We have great grass and a new inground sprinkler system that we are hoping can also be used to just water the garden when we get rid of roughly 70% of the grass for gardening.

I really appreciate your video it’s so spot on, I also love that y’all have a teachable spirit. By this first video I’ve ever seen I can tell you have really embraced the old life. To my husband and I it’s just how you do life. It’s great to see the generation after us is keeping it going well done guys. My daughter is the same way. It brings peace and comfort to know in a natural disaster or just every day life your good, Right? I feel bad for those who cannot do these things and more sad for those who can and do not. Such a beautiful basement grocery storage. The sand trick with carrots really does work it’s amazing. Ice blocks with sand sawdust and burlap worked in my great grand mother’s ice house. My great Grandfather made a small opening through the wall for their cold storage and ventilation that operated during the warm weather. She had a spring house as well out side in the creek. Her first home was an adobe. I loved it even to this day. Looking forward to the next videos. What a treasure y’all are. ♥️👍🇺🇸🙏Brooks, Oregon.

I learned a method of organizing my freezer. Use large shopping bags, one green for veggies, red for meat etc. But if you have 3 freezers, designate one for fruits, one for veggies and one for meat. Label them.
@lynnb1226 Жыл бұрын
I’ve thought of ding that, but my fear is a break down of one freezer and losing all of one category of food.

Speaking from experience. Don't put ALL of one thing in one freezer. If freezer goes out, you loose ALL of that one thing in that freezer 😢

Newly subscribed! Y’all are awesome. Thanks for giving price comparisons on the food. I follow other homesteaders/farmers and I’ve come to appreciate H‑E‑B prices a lot more. The sugar was a 61-68 difference. Real salt was 75-175 but considering it’s 275 in your area, that still made me feel pretty good. Thanks for sharing your hard work with us.

Would you consider making HAND PIES or THUMB PRINT cookies with your raspberries for holiday gifts and parties? Then you can also gift the jam or frozen berries with the recipe card tied with a 🎀 ribbon.

I’d suggest blueberries to replace some raspberries if you don’t already have them. They are very good for you and fresh organic blueberries are so good.

Finally some people that are prepared. Don't forget to have your own powersource for the freezers. Great to see people still do this. My grandparents had a small farm and had a celler with canned food fruits veggies meat they went through ww2 and the hunger winter. Many died. So never say it not gonna happen that was 70 years ago. So another one is due.

After watching this video I bought a one way ticked for my ex Mexican girlfriend. All she cared about was fancy restaurants, fancy clothes to the point closet has collapsed and taking photos of herself. In reality, no she moved out by herself and back to Mexico, but now I see that, I am glad she is gone. How useful is your wife. Great Job, Great Project, don't stop.
