Btw the last tool is my favorite! Let me know which one is yours. Anybody else have interesting tool ideas for the homestead garden?

My favorite for indeterminate tomato plants are cattle panels. Set them up 2 feet off the ground using T posts to secure. Weave the tomato plants as they grow. Excellent air flow and tons of tomatoes. Also plant Basil in between each plant. This deters pests and tomato hornworms and promotes lots of tomato growth.

Thanks for the Eliot Coleman advice. Loving the tomato cages… I’ve never seen them before. They make much more sense!

send my hubby this link, besides the other tools those cages are very handy indeed.. and the sweeper for the bugs is a very good idea too, by chance I saw this idea yesterday and he mentioned he puts some diatomaceous earth in the catcher so whatever is sucked up would be covered by the earth.

Over the last few years of gardening, I've started gaining more items and tools for the garden. I think this season I have gained the most though. This year I got a two-wheeled wheel burrow, tine fork, hori hori, and a 2 gallon watering can. I have an old tiller that leaks but runs, I have several flat 10x20 trays for starting plants, several pots and grow bags, a hand shovel, a hand rake, a shovel, rake, shears, and a hand scoop. On my list of tools that i would like is a better hose, a broad fork, a wheel hoe/cultivator or hand plough/furrowing tool, a stirrup hoe, and a soil moisture monitor. I might have to do what you suggested buy a regular hoe and cut it into a furrowing hoe. good idea! I have made my own water barrel out of a 20-gallon trash can and made my own table for it. I added a few drains into the upside-down lid for it and a spigot.

Do you generally use the weeds for composting ? I'm picking 3-4 5 gallon buckets most days and tossing them away on the burn pile
@morethanfarmers Жыл бұрын
Yes, we compost our weeds as long as they haven't gone to seed yet. Michelle also throws them on top of the mulch around plants to help keep other weeds from growing.

Many people feed weeds to their chickens. Especially if they use their chickens to do their composting. It’s something I plan to do,when I get chickens- hopefully next year

Cody!!! How fun to find you and your family on KZbin homesteading! My husband and I have many dreams for our homestead some day and I love finding others doing the same thing. Quick question, where did you buy your tomato cages? They look awesome.

Hey! Good to hear from you! We got our tomato cages from a local greenhouse.. They are epic! Tractor Supply carries them, although theirs aren't quite as sturdy. I believe Berlin Seeds in Holmes County carries them, and you could probably get em shipped. Good luck on the homestead! Btw, as you can see I'm pretty new on KZbin. I'd like to learn what people would like to see. Anything you'd like to see videos about?
