Moreton Bay Reefies

The previous sessions in my normal stomping grounds have slowed down heaps since the heavy rain, while I was catching sweetlip and snapper a couple weeks ago, now all I could manage was bream and flathead. So with that in mind Brocky and I made a plan to shoot further north into the bay on the hunt for some cleaner water, and more abundant reefies. The morning bite was red hot, but unfortunately almost all of the sweetlip we ran into were spangled emperor, which are notoriously hard to catch of legal size in the bay (45cm). We jumped over to a few spots, pretty quiet with the only fish willing to bite being small squire and wrasse. Feeling defeated we did a quick drift of a spot I’d caught a good haul of flatties at the previous day, quickly bagged 2 nice ones, and called it a day.

It’s still heavily pressured and fishing isn’t great for those that can’t put the time in, fishing once or twice a week and keeping your finger on the pulse is pretty important if you want to be able to consistently catch a feed. Start of summer when the water started to warm up a little I switched my focus on grassy sweetlip and catching a feed was easy, after everyone has had a crack now the 28-29cm fish are way more common, and next year there will be plenty for the guys who get on them first. Fishing the bay is a bit seasonal, and being the first to figure out where the fish are holding is always a massive advantage.

Another good session on plastics. Without revealing 'Spot X'.....looking for some spots to hook onto some grassies and shallow snapper. Normally fish GC and reefs, but wanting to do more in the Bay

North Coochie, north Macleay, Cleveland point, Wellington point, peel, goat, green and mud are all full of reef mate, the fish come and go but generally if you can find bait and a bit of run in any of those locations you’re sure to catch a couple, mud island is a pretty good place to start, cause 90% of the island is reef and rubble, so it’s pretty hard to miss, and there’s easy to spot landmarks to fish like points and drains.

@@epic_tangles filthy at peel today mate, caught a nice snapper and lost a proper one unfortunately. Pretty clear at mud yesterday though, managed a solid feed of grassies
