Moreton Corbet Castle is a ruined medieval castle and Elizabethan era manor house located near the village of Moreton Corbet, Shropshire, England. The castle was originally known as Moreton Toret Castle, and was built by Bartholomew Toret after the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. In about 1239, the castle passed by marriage to the Corbet family, which gave its name to the castle.
The impressive ruins of Moreton Corbet Castle are the product of over five hundred years of building, with the original fortified house dating back to around 1100. The castle was stormed by William Marshall on behalf of King John of England against Bartholomew Toret in February 1216.
The castle was burnt in the civil war of Charles I and has been out of use since the 18th century. The castle is a Grade I listed building and English Heritage property. The neighboring church is also worth a visit, and the castle ruins are a great place for a family picnic. The castle is now a fine ruin and is open to the public. Children are welcome to explore the nooks and crannies of the castle ruins. Moreton Corbet Castle encompasses the remains of a 12th-century moated castle and the exquisite shell of an Elizabethan mansion built to replace the original castle. The village of Moreton Corbet is just north of the larger village of Shawbury near Stanton upon Hine Heath and the River Roden. The church in the village is ancient, has a tower and several stained windows, and contains ancient monuments of the Corbet family. The picturesque remains of an 11th-century castle and an Elizabethan mansion house can be found at Moreton Corbet Castle.
