Shrewsbury is a town in Shropshire, England, located within a bend of the River Severn, which makes it a natural defensive site. The town was probably founded as a town in the 8th century by the Saxon rulers of Mercia, who needed a fortified burh to control the Severn river-crossing on the road between the burhs of Hereford and Chester. After the Norman Conquest, Shrewsbury was granted to Roger de Montgomery, who promptly built a castle to defend the town and the river crossing. The traditional story of the foundation of the castle is that it was begun by the 1st Earl of Shrewsbury, Roger de Montgomery, in 1083. 50 houses were demolished to make room for the new castle.
Shrewsbury Castle is a red sandstone castle that stands on a hill in the neck of the meander of the River Severn on which the town originally developed. It is a Grade I listed building and is directly above Shrewsbury railway station. The castle was originally an Anglo-Saxon timber fortification, guarding the only dry-shod approach to the town. The Norman castle, built of red sandstone, was constructed in the late 11th century.
The Shropshire Horticultural Society purchased the castle from a private owner, then Lord Barnard, and gave it to the town in 1924, and it became the location of Shrewsbury's Borough Council chambers for over 50 years. The castle was internally restructured to become the home of the Shropshire Regimental Museum in 1985, which later became the Soldiers of Shropshire Museum.
