I Used to Scavenge the House for change before i started school. id head straight to the Dim Sum Shop and they would hook me up every Morning, i wouldnt go hungry. i have a deep appreciation for the Chinese. taking care of me as a young one.

Drew, I think you would love this random fact: the fortune cookie alleyway's (Ross Alley) Chinese name literally means "Old Luzon Alley" (Luzon is the biggest island in the Philippines and it was how the Chinese called the Philippines back in the days), but I looked at that red history board and it doesn't mention why it was named "Luzon" 😄 Also, the Taiwanese flag you see all over Chinatown, people use it not necessarily to present "Taiwanese" identity, but the non-/pre-Communist, OG China (Republic of China, which is the current Taiwan), as they don't want to recognize the Communist regime Anyway, love your content so much and I'm so inspired to start making content like yours!! ❤

🙄 why are you bringing politics into the video. Also, it’s funny how the Western media keeps on representing china’s communist party in such a negative light. Yeah, it has its faults - just like every political party. You think our current US government is any better? Drastic increase in living cost, people raiding/looting from stores, school shootings, people dying from drug overdoses (these are zero to none existence in China). If you haven’t been to that country, don’t rely on and believe what the social media is telling you - seeing is believing after all.

Small correction, there are people from Hong Kong there, but most people are from the Canton Province, specifically Taishan city, in the mainland.

YES, it was us Toisanese, whom built the Transcontinental RR, THRU the Sierra-Nevada Mts. (Toisan is Cantonese, Taishan Mandarin)

Okay so let me correct you. The vast majority of Chinese immigrants in North America speak Cantonese or their native village dialects. Rarely Mandarin maybe the more recent immigrants speak Mandarin. Because Mandarin only became Chinas official language after 1949 most Chinese elders can’t speak Mandarin

When Americans think of Chinese, its mostly referred to the Hong Kong people that built the railways and came over here to seek a better life because the Qing dynasty was too corrupt and oppressive. Even all the Chinese actors in Hollywood movies are mostly of Cantonese or Hong Kong origin. The sad part is that nobody wants to go back to China. That's why Chinatown was created. It was kinda like a refuge.

And majority of immigrants that arrived in the 60s and 70s to SF and NYC were from Hong Kong or villages near Guangdong, where Cantonese is the dominant language.

On Clay St (not sure where else) there are a couple of buildings that fly the People’s Republic of China flag. (🇨🇳) Whether that’s simply a statement of cultural pride or something more overtly political I’m not sure. You can look down the hill and see the Republic of China/Taiwan flag (🇹🇼) pretty much across the street from each other.

This was all bs. I lived in California, and you are never ever getting that amount of food for $10. That's why he never showed the menu. Each bun is going to be at minimum $3.50, and meat option always cost more. Duck costs $18/lb if you're lucky.
