Proper lubrication that reaches all of the moving parts is what keeps these machines tools running, and in this case Josh listening to his machine prevented a much bigger failure and much longer downtime. Oil sight glasses are a good indicator, but like many of us have observed some oil paths can become blocked even if the oil is at the right level. Visual inspection of all the locations is not always easy, but it's worth spending the time to ensure the oil is getting where it needs to be.

My high school shop teacher had a sign on the wall behind his desk "If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over". That was 63 years ago and I don't know of anything that has had a more profound effect on my life.

And speaking of shop, to quote Adam Savage of the Mythbusters series, "If you want the kids test scores up, bring back band and bring back shop and get kids actually learning stuff instead of teaching them how to take tests."

Hi Josh, good job with the repair. Yet another reason to save odd springs in a bean can. Never know when that odd one might fix a broken part . As to your blocked pipe feeding the ratchet there might have been a small piece of the spring jambed in there. I've also seen machines where the odd oil line has been intentionally crimped to reduce the flow, not eliminate it but to make more available elsewhere. Eliminates the need of a regulator valve on each outlet. However your fix doesn't seem to have reduced the oil supply to anywhere else. Regards from Canada's banana belt. 🤞🇨🇦🍌🥋🕊️🇺🇦🕊️🇺🇲👍

I worked for Morey back in the late 70s early 80’s. We were more into rebuilding with a few new machines built. We were in an old locomotive repair shop in Middletown NY. I don’t think they were in business after 85.

Spring was jealous of the new oil, there known to fly off the handle, groan. Maybe you could clean the oil through a car oil filter, just pour some through and let it do its job, I did this with 25 litres of hydraulic oil, I used to flush an old surface grinder. Great job as per usual Josh. Thanks for sharing.

Good job again Josh......in all my years, Ive used abt all there is as a sealant gasket, and found that the normal silicon goops tend to be either so messy and never seal correctly or breakdown with oils or glycol based fluids. I did find and use when ever possible a product called Yamalube, its made by Yamaha for sealing crankcase halves together. Goes on thin and smooth and doesnt break down is easy to remove if necessary and is the best ive found over the years.....Goopy regular silicon does breakdown in time with oil and the particles can become dislodged and plug up small orifices which could result in disaster....Try some, you may like it.....I know I do.......just saying......ughhhhhh still snowing yi yi yi... Yes, the Yamaha sealant. That is the only stuff that will keep a Harley from leaking oil. Seriously, it works wonders on Harley-Davidson. Lol

I’m wondering, if it was meant to push oil down that port on top of the ratchet mechanism, are there parts not getting enough oil now that it’s just poured over it? If you want to bend those lines without kinking them you can fill it with silica fine sand and some water, freeze it, then bend it while frozen this way the frozen stuffing will keep it from collapsing.

That was really annoying that the problem occurred just after you changed the oil and wasted $60 worth of oil. But at least you were able to get it all sorted out and get that last oil line unblocked. Looks like a "someone's been here before" issue. Don't you just hate it when someone who doesn't know what they are doing "fixes" something.

When I used to work in a press shop as a maintenance fitter we got rid of copper lubricating lines because of the simple reason they could get squashed and no lube to moving part. Replaced with 1000psi nylon tube. Might not work in your situation

How is the ram lube system done on such a vertical shaper? Only have a horizontal, which has a semi-hydrostatic ram, which is kinda awesome. Imagine that's difficult to do, on a vertical one.
@TopperMachineLLC Жыл бұрын
The bull gear is in an oil bath system that has a Bijur lubricator. It pumps oil to the ram through 5 ports. It pushes so much oil that it should never wear out.
