It could have been because of the subject matter but 3 years before Silence of the lambs won best picture so it's weird...easily Pitt's best performance along 12 monkeys and highly superior than Once upon a time in Hollywood which to be honest it's a very one dimensional character. They're 'career Oscars' like Pacino's Scent of a woman and others.

I think he should of won for The Shawshank Redemption. He was absolutely incredible in that film. He has a depth in that performance that is rarely achievable by actors. The scene when he keeps his promise to Andy and walks through the fields of Buxton. No dialogue, just Morgan and Thomas Newman’s magnificent score, a true high point in American Cinema.

One of the few actors/directors in recent years to actually get a unanimous standing ovation: only the likes of Clint Eastwood (2004, director of this very movie), Martin Scorsese (2006), Meryl Streep, Christoper Plummer (both 2011) ^ Steven Spielberg (1998) have been given the same honor. Those legends who were recognized for their body of work. And his speech was pure class, short and sweet. One of the classiest actors of our time.
