i’m 100% convinced that women’s clothes aren’t designed to be flattering on anyone, they’re only supposed to look good on hangers.
@elii13400004 жыл бұрын
Women's clothes are designed to be flattering on exactly one person (most commonly someone weighing 100lbs or less, with a 24 inch waist and a bust and butt to match). Then the pattern is scaled into different pre set sizes and is expected to look good on every single body type-which is, of course, ridiculous.

I sewed a silk dress for myself which ended up with a too-low V-neck. I took a long rectangular silk scarf in a complementary print and draped it around my neck & the neck-line, and then stitched it into place permanently, hand-tacking it onto the neckline in six places around the neckline edge.
@trekadouble7575 жыл бұрын
I love that project a lot because this is actually a nice way to make a bust cover that isn't just sitting behind the dress with an awkward shape. It's cute, it looks like it's part of the dress, it's nicely done, it has volume and texture, just perfect. One thing though about the way you attached it. Attaching it to your bra, with pins like you did, or sewing it, is a great thing because then you can wear that bra with another dress who has the same problem, it makes it into a cute bra, and it also means your dress stays intact. I personally would sew it by hand with a running backstitch or a simple running stitch to the edge of the dress into the hem (to make it invisible), or I would attached it with safety pins, so that I have the cover attached to the dress, but not in a way that doesn't allow me to take it off easily in 5 minutes if I need to (for example to sell the dress, or to wear it with another coloured cover).

I've never really found a slip or top that worked that way for me. Either it was visible in the back or the sides, it made a strange combinations of lines/angles with the dress in the front, or the colour or material just didn't match well enough. I've thought about sewing something onto the dress, but that probably wouldn't turn out great (it would be difficult to hide the stitches well enough, for example), so the idea to sew it onto the bra seems like the perfect solution.

I'm a little sorry that I didn't show the bra being pinned while I was wearing it (but I would have felt a little bit weird on camera in just a bra!), but the pinning I did while the bra was on the dress form is exactly the same as how I did it on myself. I just used straight pins, and sandwiched the pointy end between the bra and cover. I wore it for a whole evening of wedding activity including dancing, and did not get poked by the pins even once! the outer bottom corners were indeed just left loose, and I did not have any problems with them riding up. That said, your mileage might vary. Hope that helps!

Ahh. That's an interesting idea. Thank you. I HATE HATE HATE low necklines. I'm the type who would be quite happy if the high necks of history would return. . . .Yeah. Ok. Maybe not THAT high. lol We don't like to feel choked, either. But 'crew necks' are definitely my preferred go-to (this quite possibly is the result of living somewhere where winter lasts 6 months of the year. And I'm not one who likes a cold chest, thank you. Though, I also don't like turtle-necks, so yeah, I dunno), so putting on something fancier that suddenly takes a plunge. . .eh. . .no. I also have a problem that the usual 'tank top' or 'camisole' doesn't quite fit me either and usually ends up being also way-to-low on me for some reason. (Better if it has adjustable straps, but most of them don't) I've also used 'dickies' (that is the worst name ever) to slid inside the shirt, but yeah, the lower the neckline the less they stay in place. So i have started sewing in custom inserts to bring the neckline up. I love this idea of making the 'bust shape' neckline instead of always having to resort to the 'straight across' look. While your results are still a little low for my taste (yeah, I prefer NOTHING is showing. lol Any lower just feels so wrong to me. Not to mention usually cold.), I love the idea of being able to give it some shape. Maybe I'll start experimenting a bit more now. Thanks for the idea! Also, depending on the garment itself, its often not hard to just cut the insert down to size and actually sew it in place on the garment itself so that you don't have to pin it inside. But that depends on the lines and seams that already exist.

Blouse inserts are quite an old thing. I had yards and yards of old lace that just sat there. So I cut them into 10 inch pieces and thensewed them together, row upon row. Next to the top corners I stitched enough flat elastic to reach around each bra strap and sewed snaps for fasteners. It covers the entire cleavage, but i sheer enough to let you think you see more then there really is. It's a great illusion.

Hey Morgan! Could show how to do this on a wrap dress? Or a different strategy for the same design challenge on a wrap dress?? Thanks!

I cut out a square piece off a tanktop with lace edge years ago and when needed safety pin It to the bra straps. A new one is un orden and i'll be trying this style

I like shirts with a built in fake undershirt. What I like about staying at my ideal weight is that when having to buy ready made off the rack clothing in my size when being overweight they do not come with a plunging neckline as often unless it is an evening gown like what you are describing to make alterations on. In my case on my high school graduation ceremony I sewed my own gown instead. It had a built in metal ring which held the gathers over one of my clavicles to hold the fabric across my chest high up while exposing only my right shoulder instead of any cleavage which at the time I didn't have anyway.

Looks great! I think if it was me, I'd have used a matching black... I'm partial to monochromatic looks.

i don't have enough "material" to have any cleavage issues, so I don't really need this tutorial but..., I still watched it as it was interesting to know how you did it! it looks super pretty with that dress! =)

It looks so much better than the camisole. Great little video

Definitely going to make a few for emergencies. Maybe put in button hole loops to attach to bra straps with easy removal. I had a few of those "cami-secret" type things in highschool because the dress code required a camisole for anything more than a t shirt crew neck. I always hated how photoshopped in the looked, I wish I had this in my drawers back then!

I remember the first time my parents bought me a lower cut shirt when I was in high school. Even though it didn't really show any cleavage, I still thought it was low cut. I guess I was born with the fashion sense of a Victorian. Lol
