i find this saying, the full one i mean, really really sweet. sharing blood with someone - someone you can be vulnerable around, someone who has seen your blood spill, someone who has hurt with you, someone you live as your full self around, someone so close they can hear your heartbeat - is a really... soul-fulfilling experience. water will slip through your fingers, but blood stains. the fact that this saying often gets erased like it does is really sad. it's a beautiful thing to think about!

Also, I was really sad when I watched the show on my own because I didn't cry the entire time, even though I needed to. I've cried more at these reactions than watching the show, so thank you Morgan /gen. i love tori so much, she cares so much about her brother. she’s the glass child because everyone is focused on charlie and they don’t seem to notice her feelings can be hurt too. she goes through a lot too during charlie’s mental health issues, especially in the novels because it’s more graphic (trigger warning: she finds charlie in the bathroom after an attempt and has to call emergencies, she helps charlie to calm down after a really awful relapse by herself because their parents aren’t home, etc etc). my poor child deserves everything ☹️❤️

So, about the boy that tori see at the end He's the best, we all love him ! He is the second main character of solitaire (the book about tori) The book took place beetween this epidode and episode 6. And if you have the time, i realy recomend it ! It is one of my favorite book of all time and i learn a lot of thing about me because of it

Jane Spring's lack of parenting skills, and her struggles to regulate her emotions, as Tori puts it, are definitely tied to the way *she* was parented. And she *is* trying, now that her son's mental health crisis has forced some changes in the family dynamics. She's doing it better than she was. But she's still not very good at it. She is in no way prepared to set and enforce healthy boundaries with her own parents, even though their behavior is harming her children as well as herself; doing that requires overcoming a lifetime of obedience training and is *not* easy. And she is certainly not able to treat Charlie as "just a normal teenager" even if she does recognize the way her anxieties are feeding his own anxious compulsions - which I don't think she really does - nor does she understand how to support him in this stressful situation, because her own coping mechanisms are to ignore, deflect, and give the appearance of everything being okay. And then there's Charlie's own role in their less-than-wonderful relationship, which we'll see highlighted more in a later episode...a lot of fans give him a pass on this but as much as we all love him, he *is* still a bratty 15-year-old who, even if he had no mental illnesses at all, would be going through all the typical adolescent moodiness and struggling with asserting independence from his parents. He doesn't always treat his mother very well either. The thing that I really love about this show is the way it handles *all* kinds of relationships - among friends, families, and more - and highlights the importance of all kinds of love and support, whether you're in a romantic relationship or not. It's given me a lot to think about as a mother of young-adult kids.

This kind of reads like not all men. Yes, not every older person is a hateful, willfully ignorant bigot. But a lot are, and it should be talked about. Thank you for being a normal person who doesn't hate others for no reason, a lot of your generation isn't like that. Saying that the older generation has issues with being insensitive is not saying every single person who is older is sensitive, it's saying that that demographic has a large problem that is specific to that demographic. Not every man is a predator, but it's a large problem specific to that demographic, which is why we say men are predators. Arguing that it's not everyone in that demographic doesn't do anything to solve the problem. We know it's not everybody. We're not talking about the exceptions, we're talking about the majority. I understand it's very irritating to be associated with a group of people that aren't always great, but the solution to that is speaking out against the part of your group that is not being great. This is intended in calm, non-accusatory way.

So true! Maybe some older people are miserable old farts, but also - people in their 70s today were in their teens and 20s during the hippie era, the anti-war protests, sexual liberation, and the start of the gay rights movement. They paved the way for what we have today.

Watching Doctor Who on Christmas Day is a British xmas tradition - I'm pretty sure it's in the novella that this episode was mostly taken from. I just love that they chose a David Tennant episode - you just know he jumped at the chance to say yes to clips of him being used in a show with positive trans rep! Plus, Yasmin Finney played his best friend's daughter in one of the more recent Doctor Who xmas episodes!

The next time someone tries to tell you "blood is thicker than water" implying that you have to tolerate assholes just because they're relatives, just remember that the full saying is "the blood of the covenant [that is, a formal and binding agreement between colleagues/allies/friends] is thicker than the water of the womb" so it actually means the opposite.

I know it sounds like a curse, your empathy and how much you feel for others (even characters), but it really is not. I was the same when I was younger. It took me a long time to learn how to deal with all the emotions (mine and others). And you're even more emotionally intelligent than I was back then. You'll learn to understand without taking so much in, learn how to feel and let go of feelings. But you'll also always carry that understanding of other people's feelings and ultimately be a better human being for it.

The episode is called "Winter" because there is a novella called "this Winter" which is basically the Christmas part of this episode. In the book Oliver isn't Charlie and Toris cousin, he is their brother. The novella starts with a part from Toris perspective, continues with a part from Charlies perspective and ends with a part from Olivers perspective (who obviously is too young to get the full picture). Other than Oliver it's pretty close to the book

I completely agree that Charlie's mom is actually trying which is a positive change for her. As someone who grew up with a mother very similar to hers, I can understand her not wanting to ruffle feathers and "just get through the day," but I feel like Charlie wouldn't have gotten so upset if she had stuck up for him....like at all...especially considering that it was all happening at HER house. God, her parents are awful. She thankfully expands on this a bit later in the season.

I wondered how you were going to handle, in what I call, "the David tenet cameo" drop bomb! And I have to say, you didn't disappoint!!! lol. but now onto the serious, his grandparents and cousins just plain out pissed me the right off! so I agree with everything you were saying. I wanted to pretty much punch david in the face and I AM not usually a violent woman. so... I was with you on that one. also Henry is such an adorable sweet puppy!!!! This episode gives you a VERY good insight into why Charlie's mom is the way that she is. She grew up with those awful people criticizing her her whole life. She is trying with Charlie, but her coping mechanism is to grit her teeth and get through it and she doesn't stand up to them being awful Charlie.

It’s supposed to mean that blood that is forged in battle ( fighting for the people you love) is thicker than the water of the whom. I feel your anger when the grandparents made unnecessary remarks on Charlie's weight and Tori's hair, as well as the insensitive remarks of the uncle and cousins regarding the mental health facility that Charlie went to. And I feel you on the mental chaos, my family didn’t believe me when I told them I had depression, which I didn’t really know existed until college, and they said I was too happy to have that. Oh, and that blood is thicker thing was actually the opposite of how people say it. It was ‘the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb’ so it’s actually saying that if your family steers you wrong, you’re not obligated to stay with them if they lead you off the religious path (I know not everyone is religious, but the main point is that if you’re gonna use that phrase, use it right).

I appreciate you asking! I’m non binary so I use they/them pronouns instead of she/her or he/him. Basically it means that I dont fit in with either gender, man or woman. It can be confusing for some to understand.

you zeroed in exactly on the source of Charlie’s mom’s hit-or-miss parenting skills. Alice Oseman gives it a bit more depth in the novels and comics. Long story short, Jane’s parents are awful. What we see in the tv show is the tip of the iceberg.
