reminder that this movie came from a competition show called “the chair” where two directors are given the same screenplay. zachary quinto, who hosted the show, was almost enraged at how horrible shane’s movie was and still to this day thinks shane’s opponent, anna martemucci, should’ve won. shane also really only won b/c he was a big youtuber.

CataclysmicGrin they were given like the same basic outline, they both are supposed to take place in the same area, they’re both about kids coming home for their first thanksgiving break, but they were allowed to add and remove basically as much as they wanted. Shane was trying to make something like Superbad, all the disgusting jokes were added by him and he just tried to make it as outrageous as possible for his teen audience. The other director did a much more calm, realistic, relatable coming of age movie. It is not obscene because none of that was in the original script/outline. There are videos comparing the two on here and you can see the similar beats that were in the original outline vs all the crap Shane added. One is a cute little relatable movie that really uses and shows off its location and the people feel mostly real while the other is just gross, could have taken place anywhere and no one feels like a real person.

Idk South Park gets away with it all the time and I mean before they overloaded every season with satricizing current events. I honestly think it just depends what you're expecting going into it. If I'm going to a Jim Gaffigan stand up versus a Chris Rock or Jeff Dunham or whatever, I know what to expect in either scenario. And there are some that find things like South Park unfunny because of how offensive it is. I think it only becomes problematic when one group or line of jokes becomes targeted to where it is apparent they're just discriminating against a certain topic, group, or line of thought. Whereas I think other things like South Park and the like succeed because they offensively go after every group and/or line of thought, indiscriminately. And I'd prefer that Rather than us saying some things are censored like sexist or homophobic jokes whilst religious and racist jokes stand or vice versa cuz at that point I think we're censoring art. (This is also being written by someone who is black lol and who does enjoy dark or over the top humor but also has discernment and thinks if we're gonna make fun of some we should all make fun of ourselves and laugh at everyone). This is also why i like Bo Burnham too cuz he kinda deconstructs what the fudge humor even is in this day and age and how we are to use it. Yeah, this is just me having a sensible discussion on KZbin. Not trying to be argumentative. I think if people were more open at talking to each other Rather than "at each other" we'd maybe get past all the name calling and judgement and get to agreeing to disagreeing and understanding each other. It's what I strive to do with listening to people who want to think ill of black lives matter or etc. I listen and converse even if I might disagree. As with all mental illness, Schizophrenia is a spectrum. I have it (and do make jokes, because I lighten the mood with humor), and I hate the tone-deaf "The voices made me do it" jokes. Not all people hallucinate killer/crazy voices. I, for one, hear people call my name, or say something they WOULD say, but they didn't. Like my memory is playing recorded audio or something. Sounds real, but isn't. There are people that have it to the point of debilitation but not all Schizophrenics are. Mine is mild enough that, for now, I'm able to go without meds (american healthcare system. I can't afford therapy or meds, and dont have insurance cuz i cant afford that either). Shane Dawson: treats his entire staff like crap and garbage. Then he basically says if you don't have a job, you should just accept any degrading role. Also Shane: crying over selling his merch for so little money cause he is so kawaii, sweet, empathetic, doesn't know how to ask for more, shy, and just can't be mean. I am pissed cause i genuinely wanted to meet the guy, I thought he was empathetic, and a good person. I related to him cause i am shy, and a lot of times i have a hard time asking for something. When this whole thing started I didn't believe any of it until I saw for myself. If I was this woman and I was trying so hard to explain what I wanted to say and my friend was like "do you understand what she is saying? She isn't making any sense", I would just ugh..I would just sit in a corner and cry. Like I know how it feels to have that done to you, and yes people can get angry but I don't think empathetic people would do that to someone, you know what I am saying? Empathetic people would feel for struggling small actors as I am sure he was one himself and didn't he always talk about his poor upbringing?

Empathy is being able to see someone else's perspective, and I think you display that here in your post. It's okay. You thought he was somebody else. And that can happen. I know what it's like to feel betrayed by somebody you used to look up too. It hurts. I'm really sorry you have to deal with this. But it will heal with time, I promise. It sucks to feel disappointed in someone, but it just means you have the full range of all your feelings, and you being brave enough to express it and post it here is good. And he claims that he's an empath. I just want to gently explain that empathy is an emotion that most people feel and it's normal. But being an "empath" is where a person believes he or she can literally feel all the emotions (and sometimes body pain) of people around them as they're happening. Some people believe in it, some people don't, there hasn't been conclusive research on it. But I have some anecdotal stories of my sis who's an empath. I'd come back home from work and I wouldn't say anything, I'd just start doing chores. And then out of nowhere, unprompted, she'd ask odd things, like "bad day at work?" Like she just knew, because I DID have a bad day at work. Different people will describe it differently and there might be different words for it. But I don't think Shane Dawson was an empath. I don't know if he even understands what it means. Anyway. Hope you feel better.

I don’t get how someone like Shane, who’s humor was notably edgy and politically incorrect, could pivot so suddenly and be able to sell himself as an empathetic listener. The manner in which he refused to change accept any feedback from his assistant while making this movie and more recently screamed at Tati’s video over that Instagram live thing he did a while back hammers home to me that he is a bad comedian who cannot take criticism, and while I can sympathize with the anxiety issues he clearly has, his actions in the past and his refusal to accept and act on critism keeps me from well...Empathizing. It was a pretty tame crazy person joke. If you get offended by poor, unfunny jokes like that then you really need to realign your priorities including what is and what isn’t important. It’s a bad joke in a terrible film, it’s not as if he verbally berated someone with schizophrenia in real life. People really need to stop being so sensitive. Likely people reaching out for sympathy feel they need the emotional support, but don't get it from their network - if they have any. A lot don't, from what I've seen and experienced. Personally, I acknowledge that I'm not defined by my diagnoses, but I believe that they're a defining factor to my whole self. Because they've had influence in the person I am today. So that clip you showed of her sister saying she learned how to drive is directly making fun of blind people. I only mention this because I am visually disabled (not totally blind but very impaired in the sight departmen and glasses don't really help,). I listened to the movie cuz the actress who played Tori is one of my favorite voice actors and I was so pissed at this movie. It made me want to punch him in what I thought was his face. I wouldn't really, but that's how you write a blind joke. Where the character themselves are poking fun of their own disability not others making fun of it or the character being the butt of a joke.

Not to play armchair psychologist here but I really do think that his excessive sexual humor largely stems from him being such an incel as a teen and young adult, I remember him talking a lot in early videos about being a virgin and seeming kind of bitter about it. In answer to your question: no, these jokes are NOT funny. I'm not laughing. Sexual jokes *can* be funny if done well but Shane makes them disgusting and horrific. "Not Cool" is an appropriate name for Shane's movie. The film is nothing more than a random collection of "jokes" which only have two things in common: an attempt to attract attention (for all the wrong reasons) and shock viewers. The movie's plot makes absolutely no sense. Dawson's over inflated ego and feeling of self-importance made him believe that a good script/storyline was unnecessary and that people would just blindly follow him without hesitation. This is probably why it's so hard for him (then and now) to hear a different opinion or take constructive criticism, even from those he considers friends. Unlike Shane's disgusting, 0.35%/100% film, your video was funny and on point. Baby joke was pretty racist. The mom was a latina with a "heavy broken english accent" the stereotype is that latinos pierce babies ears. I cannot say for sure but I have heard of it before.

The joke was implying that the baby is getting pierced and not crying about it, but the stereotype the woman was meant to be playing was that latina women who get their babies ears pierced are trashy (I don't agree with getting babies' ears pierced but I don't think it has anything to do with race or whatever). Just overall a gross joke, like the rest of the movie

I was waiting for this comment, searching for it. I'm a latina, and yes, in my baby pictures I have earrings, emerald studs. It's common, and I think it's offensive she's shown to be "trashy" when my mother isn't trashy nor is my grandmother. I can't say I would pierce my baby daughter's ears, but it's for pictures. In fact, my ears were pierced all of my childhood. I only stopped/ only occasionally wear earrings now. I just feel it was rude to make the latina so stereotypical and "trashy".

It's probably younger kids (from what I've heard, around 10-12 girls, but I don't know how true that is) who are still on his side thinking that just because he has made some bad actions in the past that he has changed because he has CLAIMED to be an empath, but because their on his side they're either not looking at criticism of him with an open mind

A lot of his subscribers are from 5-10 years ago, and many of those accounts are probably inactive right now. And that's why he isn't losing that many subscribers. Plus, many people are still subscribing to his Channel without knowing anything about his controversies. And of course, his fans are kids, who don't really understand how wrong he is.

I think a lot of people still follow him due to not realizing the extent of the problems (or they choose not to). Or its because of Shane's normalization of his own behavior. Normalization of any sort of bad behavior can definitely be considered gaslighting in some situations and it can be hard to realize that. Especially for particularly vulnerable people that Shane specifically targets (minors, people that share Shane's personal struggles, etc).
