Moriarty x Jaffe: Slow Times Make Talkative Men | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 391

Please welcome storied game designer David Jaffe back to Sacred Symbols+ for another rousing rendition of Moriarty x Jaffe. For today's show, I (Colin) emailed Jaffe four different topics I thought we could discuss, a necessary step considering how slow things have been in our space as of late. But as we often do on this show, we talked so damn much that we only got through the first two topics and figured we'd leave the other two for another time. The first half (or so) of our chat revolves around PlayStation 5 Pro, the still-hypothetical (but obviously quite real) iteration on the standard PS5 that's due to be revealed and released later in 2024. What are our expectations of how Sony will choose to roll the console out? What price can we expect? Do we think new games will be revealed as well? Heck, is console gaming even in a healthy position at all? The second half of our talk veers into games industry minutiae, specifically concerning the mass layoffs that have entire studios (and even publishers) in the grasp of deep uncertainty. Do you know that some 30,000 people have lost their jobs in development and publishing in the last two and a half years? Many of them will never get back in, because there's no room or demand for more dev. As such, in an economic space with so many losers and so few winners, do we need to embrace a smaller development structure in order to get back to full health? Does pain now equate to security later on?

Colin has always been viewed as an intellectual, respected for his well-thought-out and well-conceived ideas on games and the gaming industry. That's why it's so unfortunate that he often voices strong opinions on Middle Easterners and Muslims without fact-checking or considering the broader context. For example, his dismissal of the journalist's shoe-throwing incident involving George Bush overlooks the fact that this took place in 2008, four years after it was revealed in 2004 that Iraq had no WMDs, and after more than 100,000 Iraqi civilians were killed directly and indirectly ( the current estimate is up to 325000). When his host brought up this point, Colin dismissed it, failed to fact check himself and stuck to his opinion. It’s not about silencing opinions but about ensuring they are informed and not rooted in prejudice. Colin's repeated failure to verify his statements suggests he’s more interested in expressing bias than seeking the truth.

Perception isn't reality. Colin isn't an intellectual, he's not a pundit and certainly not an expert. He has contradictory opinions, and his methodology for arriving to his conclusions is profoundly flawed. It's almost as if he's just a normal ass dude like the rest of us. I was actually trying to build the thing that Colin suggested where your trophy/achievements would be pulled and displayed on your review so users could see that. I eventually gave up because I couldn't find an API that could access all of the profile data while also being easy to work with.

I think Sony is playing a dangerous game by undermining their console business by putting games on PC. If you extrapolate that it worked for this duration of time with the state of gaming industry in this place and so now we can double down on putting games on PC will be their downfall. I called the demise of Xbox the second they went this route, and I am fairly sure Sony's console business will go the same way if they continue to flirt with PC. I understand PC gamers push for it and they are making more money, but I do not think the average consumer has caught on that they can just not buy a PS5 and play on PC. When that is figured out, then we will see the decline.

You're misunderstanding the audiences on PC and PS5. The reason why you would put your games on PC as a console company is because those people (mostly) were never going to buy your hardware anyways. The ps5 destroys the bang for buck catagory so much harder than a PC ever could that it mostly does away with any reason the median gamer would invest in hardware that's a significantly higher buy in and also a larger footprint in their living room. Ps5 is perfectly safe

When it comes to the conversation of gamers not getting consoles anymore i think something that wasnt discussed is the impact of streamers. You have someone like Kai Cenant playing Elden Ring which is only PC and console. I can see an argument because of phones they wont move on to consoles but I think influencers will at least bring a good chunk to them because of the games they are playing being console or pc games

At this point being older, I really don't find myself wanting to game or have much time to game as I would like. I'm looking at my back catalogue and going what should I play and end up not playing anything. I do have PS Premium, but what I noticed is that when a game comes out, I just play it for a little and never touch again. I think that is my issue with subscription and playing games in general at the moment. I think GTA 6 is the only game where I would sit down and play. When we were kids, we didn't know when we would get a new game, so we played the hell out of what we got. With so many games, you don't know what to play and since there is so much to play, you might not give games the time they deserve. I don't think that's really a bad thing, but that's just me. I would never pay for Gamepass on top of Premium because that's just too many games for me and money. I think adding PSVR2 catalogue to Premium is good. That's where I want games to evolve personally, but it has a tough road when critics are always bashing it. I think they should add PSVR1 too.

I also have been broken by 60 FPS games on ps5. As soon as I played my first open world game at 60fps, I was a changed man haha. It's the reason why I'm in disbelief that most of the exclusive games on Xbox are capped at 30fps. It's just one of the endless missteps they've made this console generation.

I agree with you, but it’s true that there wasn’t a major deluge of PS4 exclusives until the second half of that console’s life cycle. I look back at my digital library of games from fall 2013-late 2015 and there’s only a few really high quality exclusives. So I’d argue that PS5 had a stronger lineup of games in its first 2 years than PS4 did (my opinion, my tastes). So now that we are in that 2nd half of the PS5 lifecycle I think 2025-2027 is gonna get crazy with first and second party exclusives. In the next 2 years I think we’ll see Ghost 2, Wolverine, Venom, Cory Barlog’s game, Last of Us 3 and/or new Naughty Dog game, Colin’s rumored Uncharted game (still not sure I believe this one but hey), Bend’s game, and plenty of other stuff we don’t even know about yet! We’ll be eatin good and for now there’s plenty of things to play and I am content to wait.

@@creese16 Regarding the first 2 years, Id agree tacitly, but 2015 was a crazy strong year for PS4. Rocket League (“exclusive”), Bloodborne, Until Dawn, The Order, NMS (“exclusive”), Helldivers. PS5 while GOOD had a lot of PS4 crossgen which really havent impressed me, though of course its subjective. And honestly a lot of assumptions on the future of Ps5. Ghost 2 and Wolverine sure, Cory’s game? Might just be a ps6 launch title. ND will release 1 game this gen unless they’re crunching to the bone, Bend’s game seems to be multiplayer so kinda lost me there. Kojimas game physint seems to be way off, especially since Death Stranding 2 isnt out; possibly next gen. I just worry about the studio portfolio and how bad Jim Ryan might have fucked it

The PS4 glazing is revisionist history. The first two years of PS4 exclusives in particular were depressing and low quality compared to PS5. Cannot compare at all to GOW: Ragnarok, Horizon: Forbidden West, Returnal, Ratchet & Clank: A Rift Apart, Astro's Playroom, GT7, Demon's Souls, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Deathloop, Sackboy, Kena, Sifu, Stray, Rollerdrome, TLOU: Part 1, Ghostwire: Tokyo, Chicory, etc. 🔥 C'mon. Keep your same energy for PS4. The exclusive output in the first few years was low and lacked quality. Always saddens me how Killzone Shadowfall killed a great franchise. Knack is an abomination (bootleg Crash). Driveclub launched in a bad state and killed a great studio. Infamous: Second Son was okay but dumbed down and the worst of the franchise (there's a reason it rarely gets recommended). The Order 1886 was a complete failure. Bloodborne and Until Dawn were the bright spots. 2017 probably has the longest lists of exclusives for PS4 besides maybe 2020. The PS5 still has good exclusives this year. Astro Bot, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade, Silent Hill 2 (seems like it might actually be very good), Rise Of The Ronin, Pacific Drive, Granblue Fantasy: Relink, etc. Not technically exclusive but they're also making Lego Horizon.

On the discussion of kids and consoles, Jaffe is correct that kids don't care about consoles. They grow up with phones in their hands, and then school has become so focused on computer work that every kid has a decent laptop or desktop. We've seen the shift of Sony's exclusives shift to the single millennial Dad simulator and it's paying off because the only people clinging to these machines are people so old, around elder millennials who lost the neuroplasticity to change habits. I grew up with consoles all my life, and I'm stubborn about losing my Platinum trophy collection, but with both Xbox and Sony publishing their 1st party titles on PC, kids younger than me have reason not to stick with the PC they got for school and just learn how to keep it maintained. Colin's bullishness about pushing games to PC faster truly stems from his conservative nature, "I'm not gonna live long enough to watch PlayStation die, f it put it on PC, put the cart before the horse and give me better games while I'm still around to play them." Steam will decimate both Xbox and Sony without having to lift a finger because both companies are in a pissing contest on how to best impress the weirdos on Twitter who don't play games; they just share screenshots of the prettiest ones. China won't save the console, they're on PC already. Colin constantly talks about the allure of a walled garden as Sony forces us into crossplay with PC hackers and then raises our prices to access online. Sony takes our 1st party fruit and tosses it over the wall in hopes of luring more in, but the garden walls are broken, and many of us are packing up, looking for greener pastures. I hope I can figure out how to build a PC before my mind becomes too rigid.

Nah, Jaffe is human scum and antagonistic on purpose, also a drug addict. The fact that either of these SSRI mental cases think they’re important enough to be taken out is hilarious. Keep coping and living the delusion, everyone.

I lost all respect for Jaffe when he said Aloy is the only character in gaming he wants to punch in the face, that's why he hates horizon. Horizon is sublime, so amazing. I don't care its not his cup of tea, but he's the only douche bag on the planet who could want to punch Aloy in the face. She's one of the more likeable characters is games. Sorry, facts
