Actually the original the song, "I want to know what love is" was song by a guy in the British-American rock band Foreigner with the New Jersey Mass Choir singing back up, written by its lead guitarist Mick Jones and released in November 1984. The New Jersey Mass Choir released their version in 1987. Since then, numerous artists (such as Tina Arena, Australian pop singer in 1997) have released their versions of the song. Wynonna Judd (American country singer) released her version in 2003, but Mariah Carey's version (released in 2009) seems to be the most remembered. Song Back drop: The songwriter, Mick Jones, had been through some personal issues and internal issues in the band. While with his wife-to-be, he came up with the words to the song which struck him differently. He felt deeply in wanting to enhance the song in a spiritual way based on how he felt when he wrote it. So he searched and found a gospel choir as back up. It was release in time for their Christmas album leaving the interpretation left to the listener. Here are the versions that I mentioned above... However the original was done by a rock group called Foreigner (a ballad) and the lead singer (now deceased) had a great voice range.
