Ok. I'd try this because I consider myself to be open minded about beer (as in all things I'd like to think) and I'll try all styles( I'll draw the line at third rate macro lagers like Fosters, Carling, Corona, Bud etc)and brewers. What I will say about Moreland beers is that their Old Speckled Hen when brewed in Abingdon prior to the 1999 Greene King takeover was a proper sought after beer. It was about 5.3%. I drank it in a dismal pub in Windsor about 10 years ago and I've had it in bottles and the Greene King version is vastly inferior.

Glad to hear, I've got 2 bottles. Sat in the cupboard next to my Fuller's Vintage. The clear glass is a bit naff but I suppose the box does the job of protecting the bottle.

Greene King is definitely better than Carlsberg Marstons. They seem to have kept up standards, though I haver to say I think Old Speckled and Old Golden Hen are not as good as when they first came out when Moorlands was still independent. This one is a bit too strong for me. I couldn't manage a pint of it! If it was in a small 33 cl bottle I'd try it. Glad you have found a nice ale to review Simon, after all the lager!

Flannerys Pub in downtown Cleveland, OH has Old Speckled Hen as one of their staples. I have at least 3 before the ball game every time I go. I doubt I’ll ever get to try this version. I did come across Old Crafty here in Ohio, several years ago however.

If this was produced especially for Father's Day, then the £5 price makes total sense, if you're giving this as a little extra gift, rather than a bog standard clear bottle. As soon as I seen that inner packing was one of those "easy to open" fancy presentation boxes, I just knew you were going to butcher it! Good review Simon

Speckled hen has always been a favourite and the Gluten free one means my mate and I can enjoy the same drink . Been on the west coast ipas / pale ales at the mo , but I’m licking my lips now , cause thought this was a online order only and do still love a good Malty beer . Mmmmmmm Great review. 10 out of 10 . I had some Old Crafty Hen for Fathers day, that was spot on, 6.5abv if it's better than that wow! I convinced the kids not to buy those nasty gift packs that are out there for Fathers day anymore, so I was given some Abbot Ale and Hobgoblin Ruby to go with it, better than socks 👍🍺

These strong special editions of Speckled Hen are outstanding beer, it shows Greene King can produce really good beer, it's a shame the standard 5% Speckled Hen is a very average ale. Crafty Hen is considerably better than Speckled Hen I like the box, it gives the beer a sense of occasion! I think for an ale of this quality and strength, £5 isn't too bad, it would be about £7-8 in a pub

I much prefer Shepherd Neames 1698 kentish Strong Ale too Old Crafty hen. I'm just comparing them on the percentage there both 6.5% Old Crafty is good it's just in my view not as good 1698 kentish strong ale.

Exactly. The importance of malts has been lost in a haze of hops. Listen, I can sink an IPA with the best of them, but sometimes all I taste is bloody hops. Then some idiot comes and sits next to me and starts on about Simcoe hops and Citra hops and this hop from Washington State and that hop from the Yakima Valley ... Come on, man! There are so many hops in your beer you might as well be eating a blooming pine tree.

Speaking of classic beers on steroids. If you can get hold of it try Adnams Double Barrelled 6 year bourbon oak aged Broadside weighing in at 9%. Absolutely phenomenal! As a very picky modern craft beer drinker I love what these traditional breweries can do when they put their minds, top ingredients and some money to it. The Adnams Double Barrelled is £7 per 330ml bottle but that didn't stop me buying 3 more, especially as it's SO good 👌

Green king is longer a premium brewery, sold its soul many years ago , very ordinary beers, having said ill will purchase this one,why wait until fathers day to to a top beer , not even a UK brewer anymore foreign owners
