Joseph Smith was willing to die in the name of the LDS Church. He was attacked, both with words and physically, by many people. He never gave up, even when thrown in jail without reason for a long period of time. Not to mention that most of his children died. Don’t you think, if he knew it was fake, that he would have given up? I mean, he didn’t really even get any (temporal) riches, his life wasn’t any easier after founding the LDS Church, and yet he still never denied the truths. Hating on other churches is not a good idea. What’s the point of it? To convert us? If so, then why not use actual reasons as to why yours is true rather than repeating “oRthOdOX iS bEsT, LDS iS a frAuD chUrcH” like a broken record? I gave the video a like at the beginning, thinking that it would compare beliefs and at least be reasonable, but of course the only logic even used was that Orthodox looked better. Our church sends out missionaries all over the world in order to convert people, because we actually want people to be saved through Christ. But you, on the other hand, laugh and call other religions bad simply because you think you are going to be saved and they won’t. And if your main point is that Orthodox is more “Christian” than the LDS Church: do you think Jesus would hate a church that is simply doing its best to follow Him? Isn’t the whole point of Christianity to care about people?

I was Mormon, left when I was 17 moved with my dad. I joined the Navy and became an atheist for awhile but found God again and married a nice Greek lady. Another point for Orthodoxy is that my mom, as anon-member, was welcomed with open arms to my wedding, but me and my non-LDD brothers weren't allowed into the temple to see my sister's wedding. It hurt my mom for awhile that I left, but I think she has softened up because she didn't want to lose seeing her grandkids. The only reason there's even this question is the serious lack of knowledge about Church history, archaeology, and the number of ancient manuscripts. In Orthodoxy you have a church where they're still 1) occasionally finding fairly ancient manuscripts hidden in monasteries at Mt. Athos 2) still doing rituals, like triple baptism, that were discussed in early writings of the church 3) where a common liturgy dates from the 5th to 7th century 4) have a pre-Renaissance/pre-Enlightenment mindset and 5) still say the Nicene Creed without the filioque clause. If anything, I wonder if Joseph Smith read a little about Orthodoxy and misunderstood the concept of theosis.

The only problem with current orthodoxy is the patriarch and how controlled the church is. The russian orthodox patriarch promise abolition of sins for russian orthodox who died joining the conscription and army to invade Ukraine. Yes, a religious head and a human, promising the fake cleansing of sins. Nostalgic? Very similar to the extensively corrupt medieval pope back then who are basically nobles inserted to the church for political gains.

Joseph Smiths early writings were trinitarian. The problem with Mormonism is that they have never remained consistent. Even the Book of Mormon, what they consider to be the only true word of God, has been edited over 100000 times. It's hard to take it seriously when they always move the goal posts.

@@aspectraYeah, I love the book of Mormon's allegorical significance, but when you have to add to a verse that literally condems polygamy in the book of Jacob to make it sound like early LDS polygamy and the sudden revocation thereof was divinely justified (in Jacob it literally says polygamy is a grievous crime against the daughters of God but they went back and added that it can be mandated and revoked by prophetic revelation) it just seems like a joke. If the Church could be straight forward about the black spots on its history and move on with trying solely to make the lives of its members better, they wouldn't embarrass themselves so much and have mass apostasy every 5 years haha

To the OP, I'm a Mormon who doesn't agree with the way the Church is conducting itself but I will shed a little light on Joseph Smith's religious fascination. It's really, really complex and I don't think he was a bad guy, but he was trying way too hard to spark a religious enlightenment period that unfortunately was not his to do. That's how you get the Church's early schism between the Reformed LDS and the Polygamist followers of Brigham Young. He probably read in depth Orthodox concepts and found the symbolism interesting but got distracted by other more mystic approaches to Christianity like Hermeticism, as well as other Eastern mystic practices such as Kabbalism and Sufism as well as some fairly far Eastern Persian practices like those found amongst the Parsi Zoroastrians, i.e. the weird "masonic" temple clothing that really looks nothing like Masonic attire at all. There's some not well known but very compelling argument as to the real reason Joseph Smith was interested in sending Missionaries into Indian Territories and Mexico to recover Shamanic practices and considering some of his accounts on Visions were almost undoubtedly psychedelic in nature, and the "seer stone" found in his pocket after his death looks like some facsimile of a Peyote button, as well as the fact that there isn't a single address by general authorities nor a single defined doctrine given against the use of psychedelic drugs specifically, despite the Church being a conservative organization that was alive and well during the 1960s and 70s, it's almost undoubtable that he was into mushrooms. His inspiration was likely came from Freemasons who are known for drawimg parallels and commonalities between religious and philosophical concepts from Norse Paganism to Ancient Egyptian Monarchial customs. However, he took it to a whole new level. He even went so far as to incorporate Galilean relativity into describing all of God's creations and the perspective of time from observers on said creations and he even got into trying to describe God's perspective as being non euclidean and fourth dimensional in his descriptions of the 'Celestial Kingdom' being a 'ball of glass and fire' and that 'The Father does not ere to the left, nor to the right, but always moves forth in a straight line' as well as 'time does not exist from the perspective of God" LDS history and the early generation of its precepts and doctrine is absolutely wild and something that Mormons could come to terms with and take pride in if they weren't so scared of where they came from.

Our church had centuries of development and its roots ack to the apostles give it true basis for the doctrines that we follow. On the visual part of the church's facade, the clerics and the mysteries Mormon couldn't be expected to be at the same level as an already established religion. On the spiritual level, in my personal opinion the book of Mormon lacks th authenticity of the "Evanggelio" as these holy scriptures were indeed written by the first apostles and their pupils. IF Mormon is to catch up to any more successful branch of Christiandom (not Orthodoxy or Catholicism, they are not branches) it needs a massive reorganisation.

Orthodoxy no contest. When you look into things Joseph Smith believed like God not creating matter, like spirits being uncreated, like God being an exalted man from another planet and tons of universes with the same, it's a very different religious cosmology.
@as-above-so-below-
@as-above-so-below- 8 ай бұрын
That's a stark over simplification. Modern Mormons convolute everything and try to make Joseph Smith's beliefs look more normal when in reality they were mystical and even occasionally mathematically complex and hard for people to wrap their minds around. Don't mistake they're condensation of Joseph Smith's beliefs into oversimplified and ignorant conjectures as Joseph Smith's propositions on the nature of God. They could be a very different group of people if they would actually think about what they believe and why they believe it rather than just follow it blindly and misinform other religious people. The real problem here lies in Mormons believing in doctrine and philosophical concepts they don't understand in the slightest and just spreading them around and embarrassing themselves by not being able to elaborate. Most Mormons are fence sitters for that reason but a lot of earlier Mormons were obsessed with the sciences and exploration. They don't believe that God didn't create matter, but they believe he reassembled light into matter, which wasn't an unknown concept in physics at Joseph Smith's time but was still unique to say the least. They don't believe God was just an exalted man. That was just proposed within the "Adam God Doctrine" by Brigham Young and was immediately retracted after his death because it was so out there that even early Mormons, who were way out in left field thought it was an insane proposition with absolutely no scriptural foundation. You could call the idea that God was an exalted man wishful thinking by Mormons who won't even attempt to comprehend eternity and existence beyond the dictation of standard time. They do believe spirits were in fact created, but that intelligence (intelligence is just a fancy word for consciousness that most Mormons can't wrap their mind around but a Buddhist would probably slap his knee over) was the uncreated source of being and therefore makes all conscious beings coeternal with the Father but spirit itself, being 'made of a finer matter' is in fact created by God. They also do believe that Man's eternal goal is to become 'like God' as we are his Children but that doesn't imply that God was just a man at all.

The True Church of Christ bears his name and follows his doctrine. @@Cypher54533 I would not defend racism in any case. My opinion about the policy the Church took towards black people between 1852-1978 is that this decision was certainly not inspired. However, you must remember that this was never a doctrine of the Church, for if this had been the case the Prophet Joseph Smith would not have ordained blacks to the priesthood, and the controversial Young would not have praised black members as “one of our finest elders.” Again, the Church did not end this policy because of the American government, this was a fulfillment of Young's words that, in the future, black saints would have the same privileges as other saints. Of course, God has not changed because he never approved this practice, so its abolition does not imply that its character has changed.

Failed Prophecies of Joseph Smith: Here are just a few of his failed prophecies: • The Government Overthrown: He prophesied that the Government would be overthrown in a few years unless the United States redress the wrongs committed upon the Saints in the state of Missouri (Joseph Smith, History of the Church, Vol. 5, p. 394, May 1843). • Men on the Moon Dressed like Quakers: Joseph Smith said that six- foot men, dressed like Quakers, live on the moon and live to be 1000 years old. (The Young Woman's Journal, Vol 3, page 263). • A Temple in This Generation: On April 30, 1832, Joseph prophesied that a temple would be built in Independence, Missouri before the current generation passed away. • Slaves: Shall rise up against their masters who shall be marshaled and disciplined for war (87:4). • Help from Great Britain: Great Britain would step in to help the South, thus starting a world war, and then war shall be poured out upon all nations (87:3). • End of Nations: Most important of all, a full end of all nations (87:6). It’s obvious all nations did not come to an end. • The Second Coming: Along with Jehovah’s Witnesses and Seventh-day Adventists, Joseph Smith predicted that the Second Coming of Christ would occur in the latter part of the nineteenth century. In his History of the Church, Smith taught that the Second Coming would occur between 1890 and 1891. Thus, in 1835 he declared Christ’s return would occur fifty-six years later; and in 1843 he predicted it would occur in forty-eight years. Smith claimed that the generation then living would not die “till Christ comes.” Matthew 24:35-36: Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. • United Order: LDS history reveals that this "everlasting" order had to be disbanded soon after because it failed. Mormons today do not practice a communal approach to property. • Treasures in Salem: Joseph never found any treasures in Salem. The "many people" were never gathered out, as only 13 were baptized out of the whole city. The treasures of silver and gold prophesied were never found. They returned to Kirtland, Ohio the following month, disillusioned and without funds to pay their debts. (Fawn Brodie, No Man Knows My History, 192-193). • All Nations would be involved in the American Civil War: This is clearly another false prophecy since all nations did not get involved in the American Civil War. (Doctrine and Covenants 87:1-3). • The Earth will Tremble and the Sun be Hidden in "not many days”: The sun hasn't yet been hidden nor has the moon hidden its face. This prophecy was given on 12/27/1832. "Not many days hence"? Since the writing of this article on 6/22/06, it has been 63,364 days or 173 years, 5 months, 26 days. I think that 63,364 days is more than "not many days". (Doctrine and Covenants 88:87). • Mission of David W. Patten: Patten was killed before he could fulfill this prophecy. • Abridgement of D&C 137: In 1976, the 137th section of Doctrine and Covenants was submitted to the general conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for a vote to be "sustained" as scripture. It is a narrative of a vision supposedly seen by Joseph in Kirtland, Ohio in 1836. What the members who voted on this new addition to scripture were not told by "the Brethren," is that whole paragraphs (216 words) of the actual revelation as recorded in The History of the Church had been conveniently left out of the version to be included in the Doctrine and Covenants. The reason for these omissions was that four false prophecies were contained in the part of the revelation which was censored out. These were prophecies so obviously incorrect that even the average LDS reader would pick them up. Therefore, they went down the "black hole" of Mormon history. • Mission to Toronto: In the work, An Address to All Believers in Christ, David Whitmer, (one of the "Three Witnesses" to the Book of Mormon) related that in the winter of 1829-1830, Joseph Smith sent Hiram Page and Oliver Cowdery on a mission to Toronto, Canada to sell the copyright to the Book of Mormon. This mission was ordered by a revelation that Joseph claimed he had received from God. Unfortunately, both the mission and the revelation were failures. This is yet another false prophecy, as the man anxious to buy the copyright to the Book of Mormon never appeared. • Joseph’s Successor: Despite claims by the LDS church to the contrary, the evidence is strong that Joseph blessed his eldest son, Joseph, and promised him succession as the church's next prophet. In the winter of 1843, during a sermon to his people in the grove next to the Nauvoo temple, Joseph called his son to the stand beside him and declared: "I have often been asked who would succeed me as the prophet to the church. My son Joseph will be your next prophet." • Failed Miracles: Although Joseph was reputed to have been involved with miracles of healing, there were cases where his miracles went awry. For example, at the first general conference in Kirtland he seized a convert's hand which had been crippled in an accident, stating: "Brother Murdock, I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to straighten your hand!". He tugged stiffly at the curled fingers, but to no avail. Turning to an old man who was lame in one leg, Joseph ordered him to rise and walk. The old man took a step or two, then could go no further. A father brought forth the body of his small child, but despite earnest prayers by Joseph the child could not be brought back to life. Men on the Moon and the Sun: President Brigham Young not only taught the moon was inhabited, but the Sun as well. In a sermon delivered in the Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, President Young made these unbelievable statements: "Who can tell us of the inhabitants of this little planet that shines of an evening, called the moon?...when you inquire about the inhabitants of that sphere you find that the most learned are as ignorant in regard to them as the ignorant of their fellows. So, it is in regard to the inhabitants of the sun. Do you think it is inhabited? I rather think it is. Do you think there is any life there? No question of it; it was not made in vain." (Journal of Discourses, vol. 13, p. 271). From the LDS publication, Journal of Discourses, vol. 13, p. 271 confirming the fact that Mormon Prophet Brigham Young taught the moon was inhabited as well as the sun. This sermon was given by Brigham Young in the Tabernacle in Salt Lake City on July 24, 1870. Brigham Young also prophesied that the Civil War would not free the slaves. (Journal of Discourses, Vol.10, p.250, 10/6/1863)

@Matheus Ribeiro Lira Mormonism is not a Christian Sect, it is a Cult/False Religion. It is impossible for Mormon’s to call themselves Christian’s and for Christians to call themselves Mormon’s. These are two different religions. Biblical Christianity is a monotheistic religion and Mormonism is a polytheistic religion. They both cannot be correct.

While I definatly agree that mormonism is farther into the pit on that front, I think a problem of similar ilk can be found in the eastern orthodox, and catholic traditions of modern day. That being that they both seem to claim this idea of an apostolic mantle. Now they definatly have a provable history tracing back to the original apostles. But that isn't was they mean by it in the full extent (besides so do most protestant churches through Martin Luther) they take it to mean that there is literally some kind of special ordinance that is handed down from the apostles to whom they ordained, and then who that person ordained, and then who that person ordained, and so on till the modern day. And they take this to define such I doviduals as having higher spiritual authority, and even in some cases to be fully inerrant on spiritual/holy matters. This is a ludicrous thing to believe. There's an obvious case to be made from the gosples, acts, and Paul's letters that the actual first apostles who lived with Jesus had some formed of specific spiritual authority that others don't possess. Much like something akin to the authority of prophets in the old testimate. However there is absolutely nothing to be said on an idea of being able to hand down such a gift. And as verification of this I would say that it's obvious given such "ordained" individuals lack of miraculous abilities. This doesn't mean miracles don't occure in these churches, they do. But the disciples had literal miraculous powers given to them by christ before he accended so they could prove the authority he's giving them. They could perform supernatural feats like miraculous healings, and stuff on tap as they wanted to. This is obviously lacking in even the first generation of ordained ministry from the apostles much less today's ministry. This prooves to me that these claims of some form or another of higher spiritual authority that the Eastern Orthodox, and catholic claim to have is nonsense.

Seeing the comments above, I feel a bit bad...maybe cynical but there are existing differences between the ways we execute our docktrines in comparison to you, Catholics. We believe in the same God no doubt, but through a so called "unification" one should give up it's traditions and structure as its swallowed by the other. None wants to give up its beautiful and historic traditions and thus "mending the schism" would cause more chaos among the ranks of the Vatican and our individual Orthodox Patriarchats.
