I met a Jewish woman who had a lot of tattoos, even though it was frowned upon by her religion. She asked her rabbi before her first tattoo and he told her to go for it "your body is a temple, that is true, so feel free to decorate your temple with art that is special to you. As man can hang art on the walls of our temples, so should you decorate your temple however your see fit." I loved that logic.

As a permanent makeup artist, this shit is unhinged. I am not a tattoo artist. I’m an expert in creating brows, eyeliner, freckles, and lip tints in a way that fits the client’s face and personal style and will age well. These services are done with a different ink formula than tattoos and in a shallower layer of the skin. Am I doing line work and shading? Yes. Do I know how to prevent infection, transmission of blood borne pathogens, and scarring? Yes. Am I good at these services on faces? Yes. But am I an artist who knows how to create an image on skin? Absolutely not. Even the line work I do is different than the line work a tattoo artist does. I dont do sharp, clean, narrow lines because that would look absurd in my work. I have tattoos from first year apprentices that are far better than I could ever do after 4.5 years as a PMUA.

I always have found the saying “my body is a temple” to be weird even as a TBM. Temples have paintings and stained glass windows in them. Tattoos are kind of like paintings just not the kind you put on the wall. It’s kind of hypocritical to have that rule if the temples have that stuff in them.

Interesting that tattoos or tā moko (traditional tattoos) are not allowed by Mormonism but there is a healthy Māori Mormon population in New Zealand. There is a bit of a resurgence of tā moko in New Zealand as a process of decolonization and embracing your whakapapa (genealogy). One example is a lot more women getting moko kauae (female facial tattoos). I wonder if this announcement will mean we see more Māori Mormon with tattoos in NZ.
@patrickcollier7090
@patrickcollier7090 2 жыл бұрын
I knew quite a few Māori Mormon girls who attended BYU-H and none had the moko kauae. I never had conversations about it with them so I don't know if any of them ever considered it or how they felt about the tradition and how it related to their belief in the church. I suspect that if you had them and were attending church in New Zealand it probably wouldn't be a big deal. Outside of NZ I think it wouldn't go over well with non Māori Mormons. Just my hunch though.

As a former blood collector at the Red Cross, there is a questionare donors have to fill out to make sure their blood is fit for transfusion. There’s a question about tattoos and piercings, if someone says they’ve gotten one in the past (6 or 12 months I don’t remember) they’re a a follow up question we have to ask about what state they received their work in. If it’s Utah they have to wait a certain amount of time before being eligible because of Utahs lack of regulations on the industry here.

Yo what???? I haven’t done anything with blood since doing plasma before we got married so I didn’t ever pay attention to that question but that’s wild. Also the difference between “blood collector” and “blood collector at the Red Cross” is a very good reason to specify 😂

i’m an apprentice here in SLC and i hate seeing these “artists” who have had basically no training. i’ve been working so hard in my apprenticeship and it was so hard to even get one in the first place. it’s like a slap in the face to see these people with only a few days of training doing these tattoos on people.

It’s also wild being in the esthetics industry in SLC and seeing these cutesy all-pink studios offering the “tiny tattoos”. The first time I saw one I was baffled because my first thought was “these girls literally cannot be qualified to be doing this”. But apparently tattoos are TOTALLY fine and not (insert various stigmas rampant in utah around tattoos) when they’re being done by other blonde women in an pink studio with minimal training. Cut me a break, gals!!!

this makes me really sad. i live pretty close to SLC and had no idea that mormons could get tattoos now. of course they're going to go to people with no experience, theyve probably had no education on tattoos because of how taboo they used to be. its weird how quickly the church keeps changing lol. i wish this was inst x agram and i could see what shop you work at and recommend people to your shop or even get tattooed from you myself.

I got quite a large piece as my first tattoo (roughly 5in by 8in) and got so lucky with my artist. He was done his apprenticeship but still fairly new, so roughly 2.5 hours and cost me 300 bucks. That was 8 years ago and the work has held up amazingly; overall very little fading, and the way it has faded is very even between the thick lines, fine lines, and shading. Was definitely worth going to a proper shop with good procedures.
@ChristopherSadlowski
@ChristopherSadlowski 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, where you go is important if you're looking to get a tattoo. I suggest one go to a few places, talk to different artists, check the shop out to make sure it's clean, maybe watch a client getting worked on for a few minutes to see the process in action. It's hard to say, but you'll sort of "vibe" with the artist who you know will do the work the way you want.

As far as the Maori face tattoos at the PCC goes. I lived in Hawaii for a while just after I graduated from BYU-I and knew several Maori girls who went to BYU-H and performed at the PCC. When they performed they would paint traditional Maori face markings on their face with stage makeup. I didn't meet any of the Maori performers who actually had the face tattoos. I spent a lot of time on the BYU-H campus and it would have stood out if anyone there had face tattoos.

I’m an esthetician and I cringe every time I see someone who only took a 2-5 day long seminar/course doing facial or body treatments they’re not knowledgeable enough or truly equipped to do. What angers me the most is that many treatments can be harmful if done incorrectly or if you don’t follow the necessary precautions. They’re gambling with other people’s health and that’s so fucking gross

Check for certifications from the state or possibly registration with Association of Professional Piercers.

I know this isn't the point of this, but fine line tattoos are so problematic. They will not stay so delicate and neat over the years. The ink spreads and it will just become a blob of faded black ink. To see people doing this without giving the proper warnings about long term issues, just upsets me. At least if someone got a small fine line tattoo from an experienced artist, you would learn about the pitfalls

My mother isn't mormon but protestant christian and she also called me wanting to get a tattoo 'disfiguration of my body'. Needless to say, I didn't tell her when I did get a tattoo until I already had it and she didn't speak to me for 3 weeks (mind you, i was living at home at the time). She almost separated from my dad because I did tell him and he told me to not tell my mother lol. Since I left my parents house, I have gotten a half-sleeve + another tattoo and I'm getting my 4th in a few weeks. Went no-contact with her and my parents did end up divorcing. For the longest time I thought me getting a tattoo led to the end of the relationship with my mother and the divorce of my parents, when in reality, it was the reaction of my mother on me getting a tattoo that led to those (among other things of course). Thank you so much for talking about this. I hate the idea that it's harder to get a job with tattoos, when I am a 4th grade teacher with visible large tattoos and our vice-principle is fully tattooed as well. Generally, people don't care anymore and churches like Mormons and that of my mother should get with the times.

I did look for a woman or nonbinary artist and that made me feel more comfortable approaching them. But also you want someone who does the style you want so I suggest checking out their art online, they won't judge you for your simple or feminine tattoo if that's a style that they do! I wouldn't go to someone who does primarily American traditional tattoos because that's not the art style that I want.

Yeah, I don't see this as changing the rule at all. I see it as making the route to figuring out the rule more circuitous, thus making it harder for outsiders to understand. (And giving progmos something to hang their hat on.) And making it easier to make it look like apostates are mischaracterizing. This pamphlet does NOT rescind anything, nor have they removed or put disclaimers on past talks from prophets on the website. This just muddies the waters. It's an extremely easy thing to rescind something (and they've done this with earthly polygamy and the 1978 "revelation")...if that's what they wanted to do, they know how to do it.

Have you ever done or considered doing a video or series of videos about the different Mormon branches? How they came to be? How do they differ from each other in doctrine and typical experience? How did LDS become known as the mainstream branch? I thought there was just LDS, FLDS and Church of Christ but Google says there's 70 branches.

Omg, 70? That's crazy. I really love content about cults, fundamentalism, scientology, etc... McKay and Jordan are my introduction to the Mormon side of things (aside of documentaries like Keep Sweet and Pray or news), so some of the stuff that sounds the wildest to me is something I only heard mentioned in passing. This would be interesting.

In an area where there aren't enough people to call it a "ward" -(group of members) then it is called a branch. Like in the outskirts of pretty isolate states in USA

I think it depends on where you are. Here in West Virginia, there have been members with tattoos and nobody blinks. We each answer to the Lord. Why would we criticize each other as we all go thru life happenings and changes. I take it that living in Utah must be so difficult being a Mormon. The best congregation I have been in has been Cumberland, MD. Such a supportive and loving group. Not all groups or people are the same.
