Great video! I'm the only one in my family who is in the church. When someone tells a "Mormon joke", those who know I'm in the church will look at me like I'm going to be outraged. Their reaction is often funnier than the joke. Lol.

The best depiction of us in media was 100% how Fallout New Vegas handled it. Also, the fact that in The last of us, the whole game is a quest towards Salt Lake City, and one scene shows the Salt Lake temple off in the distance.

I love it when we get a mention in movies or TV, even if they get it wrong, but especially when it is a good-hearted joke. It is great not to take ourselves too seriously. I also love that Church took out adds on the playbill of The Book of Mormon Broadway play that said, "you've seen the musical, now read the book," with information on how to get in touch with the missionaries.

Great video. When I was in basic training US Airforce in 1973 in a squad of about 50, I was the only active member of our Church there. Someone said "I didn't know Mormons still existed". Times have changed a lot. Good to have a sense of humor.

The whole "even the Cleavers aren't perfect enough" approach has a LOT to do with culture at the time. What was considered degenerative in the 50s and 60s differs greatly than now. That's not to say we should embrace all the things, just that we need not be so strict. Strict codes of dress for Sunday have led to some people feeling unwelcome. We're getting better at showing character regardless of image or appearance. It's just taken a while and older generations aren't so willing to let go of their old ways. But we press on.

My granddad was among a cohort of fighters who traveled with the late, great boxer, Jack Dempsey, who had been baptized into the Mormon church as a child. Although he didn't coin the phrase, Dempsey is responsible for popularizing the term "Jack Mormon," as he believed in the tenets of the church but did not practice them. He would say that he was proud to be a Mormon and ashamed of being the Jack Mormon that he was. Granddad greatly admired his friend, and considered anyone who claimed to be a Jack Mormon to be a good person who simply struggled to live up to the high standard.

@@adamhawkins3036 has anyone explained to you the Word of Wisdom, the health code we all strive to follow? I'm not opposed to sweet tea, personally, because I had friends growing up whose parents would give it to us all the time. I don't much care for the taste, but I see the appeal. And I try to avoid coffee as much as I can, but I drive semi truck at night and sometimes I need the extra kick. The only thing I'd push back on with you is the chew. My personal feeling in the Word of Wisdom is to avoid things that are clearly bad for you, and since chew causes mouth and throat cancer, that's where I would encourage you to try quitting. Beyond that, I think tats can be personal and I don't judge anyone for having them including myself; and lucky for both you and I, the image of being clean shaved is dying, and no one in church (except missionaries) are restricted from facial hair. All in all, there's no reason you couldn't join the church right now! When you meet with the bishop and stake president, they ask you if you *strive* to keep the Word of Wisdom. That doesn't mean you're perfect at it; it just means you're constantly working to better yourself with it. On a side note: my wife and I are planning a trip to Tennessee. We've heard from several friends that it's a wonderful state to be in. Any recommendations for where to visit beyond the metropolitan areas?

God isn't displeased with using the word "Mormon," Russell M. Nelson is. He's high on an ego trip and pushing an agenda he's been trying to push for two and a half decades, but now he finally has the clout to do it. President Hinckley and Monson both saw through his BS and promoted the use of the term with "I'm a Mormon," "Dare to be a Mormon," and of course, "Meet the Mormons." Frankly, the fact that Nelson's biggest agenda item since becoming president is to control our language to satisfy his personal pet peeves instead of trying to bring harmony and enlightenment to the church is a bit underwhelming and pathetic.

Hey Russell! I hope the term "lame members" isn't how you truly refer to people who use the word "Mormon." I have long thought that the Prophet's exhortation wasn't about not calling ourselves Mormon, but about calling ourselves something that gives a better impression. Matthew 10:41 says: "He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward." It seems to me that the scriptures indicate that the term "Mormon" is fine, but modern culture has given us cause to stress the term "Latter-day Saint" instead. Not that "Mormon" is incorrect, as Mormon was a Christian, and we do follow him and read his words. But Mormon's words were Christ's words, and we want people to realize that. People in today's world generally don't know Mormon, although they know the term. But they know what saints are. By calling ourselves saints, by living as saints, I think we can dispel some of the mockery that goes around.
