This is obviously a big undertaking, and I’m so excited to explore it with her! She seemed so excited when I added the buttons, and I love how fast she started using these concepts. Time is such a strange concept we’ve made up, and when you try to describe it it all sounds like nonsense! Billi loves a good schedule though, so I have high hopes.
Billi is a female domestic shorthair, she's 13 years old, her favorite word is mad.
Inspiration for learning to “speak” with buttons from Hunger4Words (check her out on IG).

She always seems happy when new buttons are added. This does seem to mirror the joy small children often have on learning new vocabulary, generally believed to be because it structuralizes and expands their conceptual horizon and expressive ability. I am positively surprised, Billi seems to confirm the theories that cats have the same intellectual complexities as human two to six year olds. Between her and Bunny the dog (clearly displaying mental abilities consistent with the eight to twelve year age range), this communication concept is doing wonders for the field of animal psychology.

Never heard of any kid being able to survive on their own, catch their meals, find or build their shelter, organize their social structures etc. Yet people are adamant to compare the mental abilites fo animals to the mental abilities of children. ETA You are somehow claiming Bunnys is smarter than Billi, when the difference is in how many words they have been taught, which says nothing about how many they are able to learn. It is not their mental abilities that are consistent with a certain age, but their knowledge of our language. And how can they be compared to humans anyway when no human ever has been able to learn the barking language of dogs or was fluent in cat speak.

@anonymousfellow8879

@@y.sangare1238 Why does this bother you so much? When it comes to survival skills&instincts, those are still taught adult-animal to young-animal (usually mothers, but some animals live in larger groups or have co-parenting pairs teaching their young, or even moms of different species teaming up (even outside of artificial scenarios like animal sanctuaries and ethical zoos.) You don’t expect a domesticated animal to “automatically survive”-if they can’t adapt they die. That’s also the risk for rehabilitating wild animals and why they sometimes become “animal ambassadors” under the care of liscenced and trained professionals Seeing where an animal’s language and problem-solving skills (for human language and concepts) are comparatively to a human’s is honestly one of the most harmless, curiosity-driven research that can be done. And these are domesticated animals-their food and shelter are guarenteed. Domesticated animals are also so fundamentally different from their wild ancestors that they’re no longer “counterparts” in the same way a captive-bred budgie would be to a wild budgie in Australia; they’re completely different species. So, yeah. For domesticated animals language is a Higher Priority for skills-development than hunting. And for a more serious application? Did you know that humans who don’t recieve sufficient language and tool stimulation are permanently stunted? There have been too many kids neglected and abused by their caregivers that never progress linguistically (and therefore mentally) beyond “mentally 2-3” or up to “5” if they are VERY lucky-and that’s all with them finally getting stable environments and love and routine therapy. Their brains simply crowd out their language (and motor) centers from that lack of stimulation needed as babies (and the longer they’re kept there, the least likely they are to recover even marginally.) So here are domesticated animals-their brains are NOT “initially” developed for language to be so critical as it is for humans. However as part of human-domestication these animals still undergo changes that make them genetically different to the point of speciefication outside of Fur Length/texture/color or size. We already know that one breed of domesticated animal can have a drastically different temperment or activity level within the same species (ie, a husky verses a terrier. Drastically different breeds but still Domesticated Dog as species vs Wolf (and wolf species)) Is it too much to assume that this process has also affected animal’s sound/signal recognition beyond clicker and spotter training for captive wild animals? And if that’s the case for domesticated companion vs lifestock species, then maybe it can give some insights into how to better help our most vulnerable. (That aside, documenting animal-adaption in real-time is very cool. If humans evolved from apes and greater apes are capable of learning and communicating with signlanguage (see: Coco the Gorilla. Coco also taught her offspring, made jokes (“Coco made joke. Coco laughs.”), and even kept a pet cat and grieved for it (which some wild animals keep “pets” that go beyond a co-beneficial relationship)) then is it really that hard to believe that human-domestication of companion animals have altered them?)
@maggiedk
@maggiedk 2 жыл бұрын
@@anonymousfellow8879 one small correction (from someone who's been obsessed with Koko the gorilla since she was a child): unfortunately, she never had offspring. Given her environment and lack of interaction with many other gorillas, she was never comfortable enough to mate. Another gorilla, Michael, was brought in to be a potential mate for her, but he ended up being more of an adopted brother (and learned sign language as well!). Perhaps you're thinking of a different ape who taught their offspring?

This is absolutely true! My cat always shows up at around 4:45, because she gets fed at 5:00. She sits there and stares at me. Then I say “pretty soon,” and she relaxes an settles down to wait until 5:00. My late dog did this also. My cat also gets treats later in the evening. She approaches me with her cutest face and meows when she’s ready for treats. Sometimes she does this after she’s already had her allotment of treats for the day. I always say “treats all gone for today. Tomorrow we have more treats.” She understands this. It’s important to use the same words when talking to your pet. They learn faster that way. They can even learn to spell! With my dog, we would spell treat to avoid him getting too excited. But he quickly learned that t-r-e-a-t also meant treat!

@@violetviolet888 I have no idea who Russel the cat is but I really don't need to in order to reply to your insult. First, none of my comments were defamatory to cats. Quite the contrary. I have lived with at least one cat in my home for the last 40 years. During most of that time I have worked outside the home. My cats figured out in about 2 nanoseconds that Human got up, showered and left five days of the week with a few 3 day weekends thrown in. If they wanted anything they knew to alert me to the issue before I had to leave for work. They also knew when I would get home and would be waiting for me to tell me about their day. They spoke Cat and I spoke English and we understood each other perfectly. I have never thought nor stated that cats are unintelligent. As I said in my first comment, cats quickly adapt to our schedules and Human concepts of Morning, Afternoon and Night, even if we don't vocalize to them our terms, Morning, Afternoon and Night. In my first comment I stated that Billi quickly understood our words, Morning, Afternoon and Night matching those words to to correct time of day. How anyone could misinterpret that into thinking I was saying cats are unintelligent is baffling. I also said that "there was a lot going on in that little head of hers" meaning that she was thinking at a very high level. So, I know that cats are intelligent. But, I don't know what you meant when you said that I was "assuming what your are thinking". Perhaps you could clarify that for me.

Wow, just wow. She seems really interested in mastering basic time of day concepts. Introducing time and chronology together opens up huge communication options. I can't wait for the "grandma, later, morning." or her: "dog, before afternoon." I think it's astounding that Billi might now be in the running for the most advanced language comprehension of any animal ever known. All thanks to the hard work put in by Kendra. Imagine what could be achieved if this training was done right from birth. An interesting scifi series comes to mind "The Uplift Wars" by David Brin (also wrote "Ender's Game".) Animals can be "uplifted" to true sentience. Only the entire species then owes one million years of slave labor to the culture that uplifted them. Humans enter space. No one uplifted us, we just are. Mass confusion. Then, when we learn process, we start uplifting our animals: dolphins, great apes, whales etc. AND NOT CHARGING THEM ANYTHING. Immense change in galactic economics. So ... War. But the fascinating idea is that animals reach a point where they just need a nudge, they're almost there, but need a nudge to gain sentience. Billi's making me wonder ...

I'm sorry, I thought the were crepuscular("Dämmerungsaktiv" in German), but wiki now says they are more varied and can be active all day or night. In my experience they are outside on patrol in the twilight hours, and take part in some human activity during the day (sharing the haul/spoil/quarry) during the humans meal, because we are more active then, and have wild races through the house at night, occasionally, to keep their humans ready to fight off a night time attacker. Very thoughtful of the cats, in nearly all cases not rewarded with appropriate enthusiasm by humans .

SO COOL!!! And time, the way we divide it into hours or minutes, is arbitrary, but day and night are obviously what we experience and animals experience those divisions with greater clarity since they aren't following our clocks. Anyone who cares about their pets knows that food time is a big deal, as well as play time and nap time, plus whatever markers of the day each individual animal particularly likes or dislikes. So they already understand a great deal on their own about this concept and can get quite irritated when their schedules aren't followed consistently. I have spent a fair amount of time in barns and believe me horses will raise a real ruckus if their food isn't provided RIGHT ON TIME! They even get the changes of daylight savings which I find totally crazy but whatever. :)

I can tell you cats are very aware of daylight saving time. I am visiting people in my job, helping them with various things. Usually I come at the same time and so when I visited a lady her cat was meowing like crazy because it wanted food. But one time it wasn't around and I was very surprised and so was the lady. And all of a sudden it struck me. The time had been changed. That was quite interesting! It couldn't be anyting else. They really have a strong internal clock.
