In this video we see some morning peak hour action at the North Melbourne flyover; situated just outside North Melbourne station. Here we see a large variety of V/Line trains including V/Locity DMU's, Sprinter DMU's, N Class locomotive hauled trains, A66 and a push-pull P Class train. We also see several interstate trains including the Overland to Adelaide and the Sydney - Melbourne XPT. We also see a couple of Metro trains between shots.
The North Melbourne flyover was originally constructed in the 1960's as part of the North East standard gauge project, so interstate trains could access Spencer Street station (now Southern Cross). It was also used by some broad gauge trains traveling between Southern Cross station and Dynon yards. It was upgraded as part of the Regional Rail Link in 2014, to provide access from platforms 1 - 8 to the new line.
Unfortunately the upgraded flyover has proved to be a troublesome piece of infrastructure. Shortly after opening in July 2014 the Sydney-bound XPT derailed on a set of points shortly after crossing the flyover. The tight curves on the flyover and a lack of lubrication was also identified as one of the culprits that caused excessive wheel wear on the Vlocity fleet; which crippled V/Line in early 2016 with countless services replaced by buses.
