Join us on a mesmerizing journey through a traditional Moroccan Riad-a hidden gem of Moroccan architecture and culture. Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Moroccan design and discover the allure of a Riad, a traditional Moroccan house.
Step inside as I unveil the intricate details and exquisite craftsmanship that adorn every corner of this Riad. From the vibrant mosaic tiles (known as zellij) to the intricately carved plasterwork (called gyps), every element tells a story of Morocco's rich heritage.
I will walk you through the different sections of the Riad, including the serene courtyard, the breathtaking rooftop terrace, and the cozy guest rooms adorned with traditional furnishings.

Just to give you a background about why the houses are built to be unassuming from the outside and have these lovely courtyards on the inside. Morocco has a very long Islamic history and with this comes the concept of modesty and privacy. So the family home is completely private from the outside world and the women don't need to worry about being seen from outsiders. Often there used to be 2 living rooms. One which is completely private for women and one for men, but this separation is for guests but within the family they would mix together.

Also Riads have 4 roughly equal ground floor rooms at across from one another. This was so that each of the 4 wives could be seen that they were being treated equally. And they had a view of the garden as it was not often that they were aloud out of their rooms. Oh for those days!!!!. Only joking.

Given the earthquake, I hope all the beautiful people that you met in Marrakech and the Atlas will get the support and encouragement needed to recover. The visible scars of this trauma are bad, but it’s the invisible ones each person carries which need more care. Morocco already knows this, and the IFRC already have partnership plans with the Moroccan government to help in the psycho social support plans that are needed. You’re blessed to have been able to experience Morocco before this happened.

These houses are gorgeous, and it’s fascinating how they are very similar to the ancient Roman elite’s houses, such as at Pompeii & Herculaneum.

Anyone who goes to Marrakech and stays in a “hotel” instead of a riad is totally missing out. There are riads for every budget, from hostels at €25 to palatial mansions you can rent in totality for as much as anywhere else in the world… Even the most beautiful of them are bland and anonymous from the outside, a result of a culture which prioritises modesty and humility. The architecture and the ubiquitous central garden are extremely practical in that climate. Was lovely to see your video of a “standard”, not “over the top” guest house. Kind of a dream fantasy to sell up here in Aus and move there. Your later video about challenges faced by you as lgbtq+ tourist vs living there was well expressed.
