Years ago I got a call from my daughter's 8th grade teacher when my girl was overheard at lunch declaring that she liked Morphine. In fact she went on, my whole family loves Morphine. My personal highlight of the day was explaining to the teacher that Morphine is a band.

For some reason this reminds of my fun times in my youth, when I was in my early 30s in the 1980s. I was an artist, and all my friends were too. We pooled our money and rented the top floor in an old, 8 story, defunct, light manufacturing factory, built in 1900. The elevator was an industrial one, with open, wooden slat sides, and a slatted, manual pull-down door. It was large enough to hold a 1960s VW Beetle. To ascend & descend you had to manually pull a braided steel cable, located in an opening on one side of the elevator car. That action released counterweights & turned on an assist motor. You had to press a stop button, once you observed that the elevator floor, was aligned with floor you exiting to. As the car rose, you experienced rare views within the elevator shaft. We divided up the whole top floor into individual studios. The warehouse had 16 foot ceilings, and was 50 foot wide by 200 feet long. Approx.10 thousand square feet. The space was rented in "as is", condition with no improvements. The rent was dirt cheap because of it. However, there were working radiators, and even by that late period of time, (1980) the building's boiler was still fired by burning coal. We made our art there, held exhibitions, and wild parties. We installed 2 lavatories, two photographic labs, and special washout sinks for clay workers. A small communal kitchen, w/ 2 refrigerators and 2 hot plates. While not zoned for "living in",....(what you did behind closed doors was up to you,...). Most of our folks had alternative housing. Artists working on big projects were known to pull all-nighters, so there were plenty of old couches around, to take a short snooze on. The quality of the air, in these kinds of studios, means you are likely to be exposed to sawdust, clay & glaze dust, paint & solvent smells, noxious fiberglass resin odors, and such. Every party included rides in that antique, turn of the century, elevator. Good times.
@Davett532 жыл бұрын
The elevator roof was made of black colored heavy duty wire mesh with 3 inch wide openings so you could easily watch the massive counter weights glide down iron tracks on two sides of the elevator car. The walls of the shaft were concrete, and coated with ages old soot. A few random windows allowed some light to filter in, during the day. Every floor's exit doors, were 8 inch thick, jacketed steel, fire proof doors, each with a tiny window, whose glass had an imbeded wire mesh. There were never more than two working, bare light bulbs illuminating the car's interior. For extra thrills at night, we'd shut them off, and travel in the exquisite darkness.

@@Davett53That's a fantastic story. I lived in a converted warehouse loft apartment (converted by we renters) in Brooklyn in 2005-2006. Similar size you were talking about but we made it into a homey place. Now you can't afford that same place for less than 2k/month. Ridiculous. I was paying $400 for me **and** my girlfriend.
@Davett53 Жыл бұрын
@@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 In the 1980s, there were a lot of old apartments, above retail stores, in Columbus, Ohio. They'd never been updated, and were rented in: "As-Is Condition". Functional, at way below market rates, and the renter was responsible for painting the interior at their own cost. Some were Victorian era, w/ 15 ft. tall ceilings, covered in embossed tin. For Artists, this was ideal. Rents included everything. Derelict apartments don't appeal to most people, but as an Artist, I knew I could improve it on the cheap, and even build an upper level deck, for storage and with a lounging area.

......"She doesn't get up as early as a baker",....that verse always cracks me up, because my wife was a baker, in the 1980s. And she did in fact have to get up at 2AM to get to her baking job, at a gourmet Italian restaurant. She baked their breads, fancy cakes, & desserts. ( She was sweet to begin with, personality-wise.) When she returned home after her shift, she was even sweeter. (Delicately dusted in powdered sugar & all sticky from honey.)
@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 Жыл бұрын
That's a great story. Bakers do get up early. "Time to make the donuts." I'm working in a grocery store kitchen and a lot of us start at 6am. My shift starts at 7am so I'm comparatively lucky. The bakers are in at 6 also, so I guess they aren't truly hardcore. : )

I may be wrong, but even if Boston had about 15 rivers, I seriously doubt that this song could be inspired by some event who took place in The USA, since the whole world knows that "The River", by definition, it's the Thames and the Thames only ... London Town, UK ... Cambridge could be anyfuckingwhere, usa are also well-known for taking their city names from anywhere [there's Siracuse, Athens, eccetera] ... nontheless anyone knows where the real Cambidge is ... Love and Peace, I didn't mean to bother ..
