This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

1 franc in 1858 was the equivalent of 0.29 grams of gold. That was during the reign of Napoleon III. So 295 francs gives us almost US$ 5,000 based on the gold price today. But that is based on gold which is the only consistent commodity for reference during this entire time. If it was fiat currency it would probably be worth much more.

@@rahulkhanduri2471 Unfortunately that doesnt work because the commodity prices of the materials to manufacture goods also varies a lot over time and are geographically dispersed in terms of demand/supply. For example, a pair of jeans in US was (and still is) much cheaper in 1890 than in France. But red wine has always been cheaper in France until California became a massive producer of it. Even within Europe prices fluctuate a lot based on the region they are from. The price of copper, for example, was always low until global telecommunications really started to pick up the pace in the 90s.

It’s hard to say how much exactly this was, but it seems to me that gold did a good job there. It wasn’t a huge sum, but it was at least a few months of wages for an average worker.

Random #Suggestion for the channel: I love the videos and sometimes have the video running while gaming, or sometimes just get distracted and find myself drawn to the screen based on commentary, watching a series of moves, not knowing whether they are the actual moves played, or one of the side explorations. The suggestion is to perhaps have some kind of colored border around the chess board, or a banner, or something visible, indicating when theoretical side sequences are being explored. Even sometimes having the volume low, it can be easy to lose track of what is going on when moves are happening/undoing etc. Love the channel! Cheers

Hey! Great video as usual. Some time ago you asked for feedback concerning your new space with all the acoustic damping installed. This time, in contrast to previous videos, There seems to be some low frequency reverb at times, especially at the end of some sentences. A few good examples: 1:29 "...most of you **KNOW** 1:31 "...Morphy continues with d captures on **E5** 1:51 "**SO INSTEAD** you **CAN'T** capture back..." Also, your microphone seems to "cut" all the sound if the volume is under a certain threshold. Due to the aforementioned constant small reverb, it is even more striking, and I found myself double-checking if it wasn't due to double-takes and splicing of two different bits of video together (which AFAIK you never do). You can hear it clearly here: 6:20 "...will come handy later in the game----.
