Morphy's games are mesmerising. His vision of the possibilities of simple moves is insane.
@brandons42403 жыл бұрын
True but there are also wasted moves and other mistakes in his game but you can forgive it given the time period. He is like a rough diamond that lacked alot of the theoretical and extensive knowledge we have today but I'm sure given time he would have been able to compete with anyone in history.

I have a couple of suggestions for better moves for white. At the 8:40 mark of the video, Morphy played Rac1, but I think f4 would be much better in order to keep white’s black square bishop in place, and also defend the e-pawn. Black would be stuck for a good move. Also, after Rac1 and black’s g5 response, I would have played f3 in order to keep that bishop on its strong diagonal.

Bierwirth didn't embarrass himself. He played sensible moves, and wasn't taken in by several traps that Morphy laid for him. Indeed, Morphy had to work harder and longer than he anticipated to get the mate. If there was any error, it was strategic rather than tactical: Bierwirth let his queen go wandering around looking for pieces or pawns to threaten, shirking her duty to defend her king. When the final assault came, she was totally out of position to assist in the defense.
