Prince getting paid that much for Purple Rain makes all the sense in the world. He co-wrote, co-directed, produced, arranged, compose and wrote all the music in the film. Morris is incredible, talented asf! but Purple Rain was the ICONIC movie it was because of PRINCE. His name is 99% of why people still watch it TO THIS DAY. Also Morris by his own admission said that he showed up late, a lot of sometimes & even drunk on the Purple Rain movie set. You can see him say that yourself in the series "tales from the tour bus Prince". Morris was not easy to work with, and if this was Walt Disney, or Kevin Fiege from Marvel, i think he would have treated that set a bit more seriously. There are always two sides to every story. Prince has his side too.

I couldn't agree more (except I would say that Prince's name is 100% of the reason people still watch Purple Rain today). Purple Rain is Prince. Prince was a major rock star by the time Purple Rain came around. Morris had a couple fo albums - that Prince made for the Time. It was a break of a lifetime. The primary reason that Morris is still relevant is his part in Purple Rain. He has never done anything as big as Purple Rain. That is no slight on Morris - I love him and have loved him from day one. I saw him on the Controversy Tour in 1982. I met him in 90s and got an autograph. I buy everything that he does - all the records, the movies, the book, have seen him live at least a dozen times since the 80s. During these interviews to promote the book, he doesn't recount how he was half-assing the Purple Rain shoot and then got into drugs - he likes to say "its in the book"

How many songs has Morris Day written from the beginning, over the years, to THIS DAY? Prince was the TALENT! Blah blah blah if you had it none of this would matter. He got what he deserved and gave out what he thought was fair. Everybody always had the option to jump ship and fly on their own MERIT! But chose to hang on to his coat tails until they couldn’t anymore. What have you done since? That is your worth. PERIOD.

What happen was Prince did a demo where he was playing all the instruments for demos like Soft and Wet. Chris Moon Studio owner, gave him the keys to come in his studio and helped show him some tricks of the recording studio. He originally asked according to Andre Cymone. Whatever the case maybe he came back and hooked his boys up.
@nancypatricia511
@nancypatricia511 2 жыл бұрын
Chris saw Prince play all the instruments. That was Prince's appeal to Chris in partnering with him because he would only have to deal with one person. "Soft and Wet" was co-written by Prince and Chris Moon. Chris Moon helped Prince produce a demo that went with Prince out east when he first tried to get a contract. When Prince came away with no prospects, Chris Moon went to see Owen while Prince was still in New Jersey with his sister Sharon. Owen called Prince while he was in New Jersey saying he wanted to manage him. The demo that Owen heard Prince on was NOT Grand Central, nor was it up to snuff for taking to Warner Brothers. The demo that went to Warner Brothers to shop Prince to them was a totally new demo that was produced by David Rivkin. David talks about that in several interviews and is how David started working with Prince. And, yes, Prince came back and brought on Andre' and Morris found a place as well. These stories told by Chris and Owen of Prince's pursuit of a record contract have been out there and they check out with each other. Morris Day has been holding a grudge over a false belief and misunderstanding for a long time. I know that there are other things that he is sore about as well. But Prince was not satisfied with where he was back then. He was very determined to be the star he became. He is the one who took the steps to get himself out to the east coast and start knocking on doors. Morris was behind a car rental counter at Montgomery Wards when he heard Prince on the radio. Morris can say that music was in his blood and in his future from when he was 5. But Prince made it happen for himself. That is what I admire about Prince. He truly believed in himself.

Thanks, it didn't make sense to me that Owen Husney would be using a old demo of Grand Central to shop Prince to the largest record companies on the planet. I'm sure a new demo was meticulously worked on at Moon Studios until it was perfected.

If prince hadn't have been so selfish, his empire would have been bigger than parliament funkadelics, death row and bad boy productions. Unstoppable. But now. Everything ends with him.
@saa9099
@saa9099 Жыл бұрын
Massage..., prince wasn't being selfish, he made everything himself. Nobody gave prince anything, except Chris moon let him use a spare set of keys to play on the board. Chris was banking on making money off this kid, and the more work prince put in the less chris had to do. It was a business move. Talking about rags to riches, a self made millionaire. Prince made a lot of people famous and in return his band members got a pay check for playing instruments. He didn't owe Morris any more than he earned. Morris has made a living off the songs prince wrote and gave him to sing for 40 years now. He should be grateful prince handed him a few finished albums to sing. But it seems like Morris is being selfish and wanting more.

These people on this site are clueless and it is clear they are younger and don't understand what was going on during the late 70.s and 80.s when the groups were forming. Prince had talent yes. But Prince had other musicians helping him become who he became. He dropped them or stifled them so that they couldn't become bigger than he was and got record execs to side with him. It worked. To this day, with the exception of Jimmy jam and Terry Lewis, nobody appears to be as big as Prince. He stifled their careers. Everything Morris saids about him is true. Morris handle his disappointment the wrong way, by showing up drunk and using drugs, which is no excuse. But this was how he handled Prince stifling his creativity. In many ways prince repeatedly try to crush this guy's spirit. Prince was even crazy enough to try to get Morris to convert to his faith just to get him to play and perform with him. Who does that. It wouldn't have been a sincere conversion anyway. I submit to u, that all of these acts would have become way bigger than they were if prince hadn't stifled them, and threatened them and yes even black balled them. It's so hypocritical given Princes accusations against Warner brothers by saying they mad him a slave to their label. Alot of the trade marks that prince and his acts are known for,like the .mirror, was somebody elses idea, not Princes. He Just gets the credit for everything. Here is a thought, maybe God took Prince out of here, so that these people could now have their opportunity to shine, for their talent. Something Prince would never give to them as long as they remained autonomous and unconnected to him. He was a genius but also tyrant

So Prince stifled their careers for 40 years? LOL This was the early 80s. They were a band for about 3 years, so after that they were free to do whatever they pleased. How can anyone blame 1 man for another man's failure? Didn't seem to stop Jam & Lewis. Just saying. I think you are the one giving Prince too much power and credit, lol.

Had the Time's song been on the Purple Rain album, it would not have been as great. Purple Rain was a prefect Prince record - every single track is a classic. Adding The Bird and Jungle Love to it would have not made it weaker but it would have made it something else that wouldn't be the self-contained masterpiece from a single genius artist. Ice Cream Castles did far better than it would have without the Purple Rain connection - wanting to be on the soundtrack is riding Prince's coattails really.

Prince died physically alone, meaning no one was in PP at that time. Doesn't mean he was isolated and not having relationships/friendships. Seems you have decided he wasn't around people at all. Many have said they just saw Prince or talked to him before he died. Maybe you feel people who are basically loners means they are "alone". That's not the case. I'm sure you know if Prince wanted to be around a lot of people he surely could have, lol. Tamron Hall has stated she talked to Prince EVERY day for hours. Mr. Day isn't being honest about the character MORRIS DAY, Prince created the character with him(Mr. Day) in mind. Mt.Day was a drummer for the band with Alexander Oneal out front, the complexion of Mr. Day was more marketable than Mr. Oneal's therefore Prince groomed Mr. Day on the desires of the industry regarding the crossover that was definitely in the making. Prince created the entire persona. Regardless of the stories true or false. Notice during Prince's life NO ONE TALKED ABOUT NOTHING because"THE BOSS" didn't play with them and it's so evident why now. Play with a dog it will lick your mouth. D

Damn Morris, every interview you are changing your story slightly. Seems Prince would not have made it without you now, SMH. Prince was the musical genius and that is why he is the ICON and Legend, Stop trying to take credit for Prince's success now that he is gone. Purple Rain became a success because of the MUSIC, Prince's music I might add. Also, why did you leave out that Prince put up his OWN money to finish Purple Rain, did you put up any money? Now you feel like you should have gotten writing credits for the movie. Stop the madness! Why did you put "Princely" in the title of your book? Afraid it wouldn't sell without his name in the title? @@romulus_ My comment is correct. Morris’s fame was built off of the name Prince. I guarantee you Prince would not have to write a book mentioning Morris Day to help it sell. Morris is still singing the same songs and music that Prince wrote 40 years ago. Yes every human has flaws but let’s be real about who was the genius and it wasn’t Morris Day. Even he will admit to that. Don’t try to rewrite history, everyone in that camp knew who was the musical genius. How did Prince hurt Morris’s career? Morris was biting off of Prince to the very end and even after his death. Why didn’t Morris write a book while Prince was alive? He didn’t want to disturb that gravy train. Do you really think Morris would have been invited to play Conchella if not for Prince inviting him? Do you think Morris would have been included in any major events if not for Prince? Prince didn’t need Morris or any of them to reach ICON & Legend status. Prince will be talked about for decades and Morris will not. Stop the madness.

@@romulus_ they could have all quit and continued on without Prince. So I ask you, why didn’t they? They knew Prince laid the golden egg and wrote their hits. Even Jam & Lewis said it was ALL Prince and it wasn’t the Time. What happened to their album without Prince? Listen to Janet Jackson’s album produced by Jam & Lewis, it was totally a Prince inspired sound. No one can deny that. Hence the reason he didn’t want anyone to work outside of the Time. They gave away the Minneapolis sound, which was the Prince sound. Yes the Time was a great band but that was ALL Prince. They have all said Prince rehearsed them to be tight. Every band member have said the same thing. None of them will go down in history except Prince, mark my words.
