I absolutely love this concept, how cool! Not just because it gives classics a new lease of life, but as a paraplegic who uses hand controls I can’t drive any of the old beauties as they’re nearly all manual. This idea changes that! Maybe one day, a Series II Landy could work for me after all!

No mention of price, range and I assume no re gen, and the sound cutting out makes me suspicious of the noise level. I'm not a fan of running it through the old gearbox adding extra weight and friction for no purpose, I can't see why it would be so hard to remove it and make it direct drive from a reducer to the wheels.
@donkmeister
@donkmeister 4 жыл бұрын
Re the gearbox... you are of course correct that a gearbox adds weight and friction, but so does a reducer which is, after all, a one-speed gearbox. It is entirely possible to do away with the gearbox but like all things it needs engineering. The chassis is already designed to take the original gearbox, the propshaft is aligned to the original gearbox, so by doing this you save an appreciable amount of engineering (especially if the goal is to have a reversible conversion) as well as keeping the original interior. Also, even with an EV you can benefit from multiple gear ratios even though most production EV cars don't have them. Increased wheel torque at lower speeds can make it easier to drive around hilly historic cities, and lower motor speeds at high road speeds can make the NVH a bit better on a cruise. You can get by without them (as production Nissan Leafs are testament to) but that doesn't mean they're not useful.
@Ampex196
@Ampex196 4 жыл бұрын
Top (4th gear) is in effect 'direct drive'. The first motion (Input) shaft is directly coupled to the mainshaft. The laygear just idles ie. drive is not transmitted through it.
@drewwatts7867
@drewwatts7867 4 жыл бұрын
@@Ampex196 Direct drive is not much use on an EV, that's the whole problem, in this case it's using the low tech gears in the original box instead of a much simpler and up to date reducer.

@@donkmeister I own a 1971 Beetle EV, with Tesla batteries powering it! The gearbox and Competition Clutch have all been retained. I have to agree with you, that it makes no sense to just have a single speed, with the Main Motor screaming at maximum RPM, like Motorway work. It really is the very best of both worlds. Around the towns, it starts on steep hills in 2nd gear. No handbrake starts either, because you can 'feather' the accelerator pedal as a 'hill hold' feature (short time periods) on steep hills. Main Motor is much more than the Nissan Leaf at 125 HP with 173ft/lbs torque. With Regen as Brake Assist. Most important feature is the Battery Cooling, which Nissan Leaf didn't get right. Also, the use of Nissan Leaf (second hand used) batteries in any conversion, is a "best guess" situation on Range. Who would ever want a professional conversion done in this way? Simply translated - spend the money on batteries, because you will have no surprises. My Beetle a whole lot of fun and a real pleasure to drive! Greetings from Australia.

No electric conversions, but Charles Ware of Bristol offers many modifications to help to bring Morris Minors up to date. He offers a full restoration service too, along with things like alternator conversions, disc brakes, suspension modifications, electric power steering, a 1300cc engine upgrade, a 5 speed ex Ford gearbox conversion etc. You can even have heated windscreens, both front and rear if you wish, along with a heater upgrade. If you're into Morris 1000's his website is well worth a look. I'd buy one of his fully restored Travellers in a heartbeat if I had the cash to spare. You'd be looking at £25k plus for a nice one though......

Well one reason for NOT doing it might be that the running costs would be around 3 times higher as an i.c. car............ There's no way I could commute to work and back home again for a full week, for a cost of around £6 in any car with an i.c. engine........... Electric Vehicle Man on this very forum itemised his "fuel" cost for the final 10K miles of ownership of his second Leaf, and the cost - using a tariff for EV owners from Octopus Energy - was £130 for those final 10k miles. Beat that with i.c.........

Surely when you have a classic car you want to keep its integrity, this is what keeps these cars high on collector's lists. People pay enough for there pride and joy without having to shell out for a conversion to electric, what would you prefer, the sound of a growing V8 or the wine of an electric motor, all my classic car show friends say its sacrilege to do this to a classic or modern classic car and I think this electric idea will offend most of us petrol heads. It's not for me, but if some people want to do this well good luck to them.

Very good but what I like about the Moggy is the sound as well as the driving experience surely all the drivetrain has to be updated with all the extra weight and power our can you not put the sound through speakers so at least make it sounds like an old Moggy?? Also environmentally wise you said you sell on the parts of the leaf what happens to the body what happens to the old engines? Can you replace the batteries?
@KinghornElectricVehicles
@KinghornElectricVehicles 4 жыл бұрын
The extr weight is equivalent to an extra person in the car so it can handle it. Power is managed through the custom controller we use. we are working on the sound. We store or refurbish and reuse old engines. The leaf bodies are cut to reuse panels and the remaining metal is recycled. Yes batteries can be replaced anytime but won’t need to be for a long time. :-)

Range on this conversation is 80 to 100 miles, depending on the wether. There are many variable that make it herd to determine the range on a EV conversion, wether, battery condition (if the batterys are not brand new) and the weigh of the car it self can all effect the range. When we made this video we were still testing the range the of the car and did not include it in the video.

I've seen one other Minor / Leaf conversion with a 40 mile range but with what looked otherwise like a very similar bolt-in/bolt-out conversion; is that difference determined by whether you use 30 kWh modules or 24 kWh modules (can't recall what they used)? So in order to come away with an electric Morris Minor, a Nissan Leaf has to die! I don't mourn the passing of any Nissan. But this might be a bottleneck in terms of supply. What we need is a Lithium battery manufacturer based in the UK, and not committed to supplying new cars - a nice start-up situation for university engineering graduates, with experimental inclinations, I would think. They are not going to compete with Tesla in terms of scale of production. Electric or otherwise, the finish on that MM convertible is exquisite.

I get the Electric Transition, and embracing the future and all that kind of thing but a Moggy without the characteristic engine and exhaust sound has lost half its charm, it’s like having fish n chips without any salt n vinegar, or having an Orange without the Orange taste. Owning a classic Moggy is not all about the looks.

My question is why? The whole point of a classic car is for the driving experience . I cannot ever forsee me removing the engine of my 63 Austin A35 van and replacing it with the guts of a Nissan leaf ! Why not just buy the Leaf in the first place .?

Formula E maybe? F1 are already hybrid. And Tesla's just announced a car that accelerates faster than a Porsche 917/30 CanAm. Nothing shabby about EVs. And if you have a good enough sound system you can make it sound like anything like like inside.

At least your electrified Morris 1000 would go better than a petrol one l did notice you deleated the spare wheel well l would not drive any car unless it has a spare wheel and a full size one at that in Australia the spare wheel is ecsentual l have a full size spare wheel on my 25 year old Toyota Hilux a luxury item

I would be alarmed and extremely upset - if any Conversion Specialist placed the Charge Port right in the centre of the Morris Radiator Grille. It advertises the fact that the Morris is electric, which may increase the chance of theft of the Morris. Secondly, any passer-by can open the Charge Port, or even vandalise it!! This should be ONE HUGE EMBARRASSMENT for the Conversion specialist, who has damaged the aesthetics of a beautiful Classic Car..... Sir, you have done the car no favours at all. Charge Port should have been hidden away.

Can someone please tell me I just don’t understand it why rip the heart out of a classic car when there is no need to. Petrol will be around for a long time and diesel yet! So taking a zombie car to a car show what ever you do don’t open the bonnet as there is nothing there. It’s now a ghost car. And the BMC a series engine was brilliant on fuel economy 40 Mpg + anyway. The heart shape combustion chamber is the most efficient design for an overhead 4 stroke engine. With using today’s technology the A series cylinder head will produce more power and still retain its fuel economy + still using the std camshaft!

Hi Paul, thanks for taking the time to comment. to answer what I think is your question(s) There is no need to take the engine (if thats the heart) out of the car, its nearly an option if you want to change to a better system. It's been going on since the cars were new, you may have noticed quite a few Minors with Rover v8s and Fiat twin cams. As with those this is an upgrade but to a more powerful, smooth engine that doesn't produce any tail pipe emissions. As you appear to be a fan of drag racing it also give much better acceleration as all of the torque is available from zero (A drag racers dream is it not?) Ive never seen any information about the A series being the most efficient combustion chamber - could you send me a link - sounds fascinating, however at the end of the day its still boring fuel that cant be recycled and is causing harm to the environment. As with everything in life classic EV conversions aren't for everyone but if we didnt try different things there would never have been any Hot Rodding etc would there?
