This car is the star of Series 2 of the TV show Vintage Voltage and the worlds first Tesla powered classic Mini. A Classic Mini with a 300hp Tesla drive unit from the front of a Tesla Model S converted by my mate Moggy and is team at Electric Classic Cars. Amazingly the EV conversion has only added about 40kg to the standard cars weight, bringing this car in at 700kg. That means staggering performance, incredible handling and torque steer like nothing I've experienced before !
You can watch Vintage Voltage in the UK on Quest TV at 9pm on Thursdays and both Series 1 and 2 can be streamed on Discovery+
A huge thanks to Bridge Classic Cars for arranging access to Bentwaters aerodrome. Such an amazing filming venue !

Just a brilliant story - family owned, learned to drive in it, watched it decay, saved it, made something spectacular and is now keeping it in the family for his kids. Doesn’t get any better. And it’s still, essentially, a Mini. Fantastic.

I remember driving my first car (1994 VW Jetta) and having a Corvette pull up next to me, revving, like I'm going to actually drag race a VW sedan against a Corvette. And I think of someone pulling up in that classic electrified Mini and the poor sod in the 'vette pulling the same stunt, and sitting in the dust going, "Wait...I got smoked by a _MINI_?!" Thoroughly beautiful car, and I love that it's been in the same family for almost 50 years now. That's lovely.

I am 76 years old, I raced against Mini's in about 1964 in my Cortina (Lotus A arm). This Mini looks standard except for the Minilights and the Advan rubber. I WANT one. But trying to get it registered in Australia would be almost impossible. It is really limited by the wheel size for the 0 - 60 test but it would not work with larger diameter wheels. Colour me green.

Check out the NCOPs from The dept of transport, go through VSB14 and build it as an Electric ICV. You will still need a VASS Engineer to sign it off, it can be expensive but not impossible.

You can use 12 “ Hillman imp wheels or early 4 cyl Torana 12” wheels so long as you stay at 4.5 inches wide they should fit, You’ll need cooper S style drums on the back and perhaps a small grinding on the trailing arms. Go at it I say!

in what way would it not work with bigger wheels ? Don't forget that Minis have had 10", 12" and 13" wheels and tyres fitted from the factory !
@RupertReynolds1962
@RupertReynolds1962 27 күн бұрын
I ran 5.5J12" wheels back in the day. The wider rims made for a firmer sidewall and better feel. (I found the standard 12" wheel/tyre setup from later cars a bit vague). Don't do what I did. I tried parallel tracking front and rear, and I swapped ends at 110 on the A3. Minis need toe-out front, toe-in rear :-)

I love how Simon has kept his beloved family Mini alive and not ruined any of the original 1960s aesthetics with ugly digital gauges. This is the best classic restoration I have ever seen. I hope it will inspire EV converters into paying more attention to rebuilding their car in the same style as it would have been built at the time had the technology been available. I hope this car stays in Simon's family for many years to come.

Beautiful car. I've been wondering about a similar conversion for mine (one day). I'd just love to know whether your Moto-Lita steering wheel is a 14" or 13". And are you happy with the weight of the steeing with the 10" tires. I'm guessing that they're 165's? I'm concerned that steering might be a bit heavy with wide-ish tires and a 13" wheel. And then secondly, the Morris badge in the middle - Did you have to get anything special made up by Moto-Lita or could you take an original center piece and just drop it in? Thanks.

Quite simply, my favourite car of all time. Almost any former classic Mini owner misses their old car, at least a little bit. Mine was a 1964 Austin 850. That brought it all back. Just the way a proper BMC Mini sits on the road and goes, and makes me grin from ear to ear. And this one has the dream inside it. It's very powerful. It looks as innocent and cheeky as the day it was made. It's a wolf in sheep's clothing.

A stunning conversion of the original classic, simply beautiful!! Having said that, on a purely nostalgia basis, there's a few things I would miss. First the sound of an original "A" series engine, paired up with a straight cut box and twin webers. The whine they produce and the sound of the carbs taking in the air through the filters when you accelerate and the rumble of an RC40 (or similar) exhaust. Second was the smell. When driving in or behind a mini they always had a distinct smell, usually petrol lol.

Synthetic fuel can ultimately be greener than electric if done right and keeps that old IC engine sound. But electric definitely has its own advantages too -quiet, instant power, removes the source of pollution from the vehicle itself.. Electric is a lot more dangerous to work on for mechanics but cars like this mini prove that it can be done, and amazingly well.

I remember driving various Minis. No matter what speed you were doing, it always felt to be 20 mph faster because of the low ride height and the way that the car reacts to every contour of the road. I can't imaging how it feels to drive a Mini that actually IS fast!

As a long time lover of classic minis who's owned several of them I'm not sure whether to be disappointed that it's been "messed with" and taken away from its ICE roots, or thoroughly impressed at the amazing results. I really miss the engine noise, but you certainly can't argue with the way it performs, and the restoration of the car itself is stunning. Yeah ok... like you, I'm jealous as hell and I want to take it home.

What a fantastic car. I would just say about the 0-60, it never tells the whole story about a cars feel any way, but two things to mention in this particular case. One, it is severely limited in how much of the power it can put down and so it will never reach its potential. Two, as anyone who has driven an electric car will tell you, they are quicker than an ICE car with the same power to weight ratio as they have all the torque available everywhere, none of this climbing up torque curves, and they never waste time changing gears. I imagine this would be really, really quick in real world driving compared to what the 0-60 time suggests.

I was recently looking at a 1932 Plymouth sedan that I actually thought of doing this very thing with. If I do it, I am considering adding one option. Instead of using these massive battery sleds that will eventually go bad and need replacement, I am looking to add a small diesel generator in the engine bay to provide the voltage necessary to drive the electrical motors. It will use a fraction of what a conventional engine would and with the size of a normal fuel tank, the range might be as much as 1000 miles per tank. As it would be diesel, it could also be retrofitted to operate on biodiesel, thus allowing me to get away from the grips of the oil companies. Lastly, it will sound a bit like the old "putt, putt" engines from back in the day, and will completely disguise what it is capable of. The ultimate sleeper!
@stupitdog9686
@stupitdog9686 2 жыл бұрын
I thought of this idea back in the 1970's. Unfortunatly it aparently won't work! You need to produce way more power than a "putt, putt" engine ever could ...... Maybe a gas turbine ...?
@bezaleeluk3696
@bezaleeluk3696 2 жыл бұрын
the idea works so well with diesel/electric trains because the wheels are solid steel and have very little rolling resistance but pneumatic tires on cars are so inefficient you will lose a lot of power in them alone.

Brilliant fun. Thanks for another great video. After a lifetime rebuilding vehicles, at 65 years of age and having had enough of unreliable, shockingly badly designed ICE that fall apart and damage my grandchildren's futures with their emissions, this sort of video review of superb, EV converted, astonishing performers has helped me regain motivation to get the hot spanner, multimeter etc. out again. Now, what do I need to rebuild a convertible, 1969 Triumph Vitesse into a (safe?) 750bhp, twin motor EV? 😉🤣😎
