I remember driving my first car (1994 VW Jetta) and having a Corvette pull up next to me, revving, like I'm going to actually drag race a VW sedan against a Corvette. And I think of someone pulling up in that classic electrified Mini and the poor sod in the 'vette pulling the same stunt, and sitting in the dust going, "Wait...I got smoked by a _MINI_?!" Thoroughly beautiful car, and I love that it's been in the same family for almost 50 years now. That's lovely.

I am 76 years old, I raced against Mini's in about 1964 in my Cortina (Lotus A arm). This Mini looks standard except for the Minilights and the Advan rubber. I WANT one. But trying to get it registered in Australia would be almost impossible. It is really limited by the wheel size for the 0 - 60 test but it would not work with larger diameter wheels. Colour me green.

You can use 12 “ Hillman imp wheels or early 4 cyl Torana 12” wheels so long as you stay at 4.5 inches wide they should fit, You’ll need cooper S style drums on the back and perhaps a small grinding on the trailing arms. Go at it I say!
@martinfidel70862 жыл бұрын
in what way would it not work with bigger wheels ? Don't forget that Minis have had 10", 12" and 13" wheels and tyres fitted from the factory !
@RupertReynolds19627 ай бұрын
I ran 5.5J12" wheels back in the day. The wider rims made for a firmer sidewall and better feel. (I found the standard 12" wheel/tyre setup from later cars a bit vague). Don't do what I did. I tried parallel tracking front and rear, and I swapped ends at 110 on the A3. Minis need toe-out front, toe-in rear :-)

Beautiful car. I've been wondering about a similar conversion for mine (one day). I'd just love to know whether your Moto-Lita steering wheel is a 14" or 13". And are you happy with the weight of the steeing with the 10" tires. I'm guessing that they're 165's? I'm concerned that steering might be a bit heavy with wide-ish tires and a 13" wheel. And then secondly, the Morris badge in the middle - Did you have to get anything special made up by Moto-Lita or could you take an original center piece and just drop it in? Thanks.

Wonderful conversion and video. When I had a mini we also timed it doing 0 to 60, got a time going one way and decided to turn round and do it in the other direction to create an average figure. Didn't work because we couldn't get the Mini to 60 in that direction. . .

As a modern MINI owner and growing up with the classic I love what the owner has done. Everyone who keeps classics on the roads I tip my hat too. All I can think is Glasgow to Inveraray that’s about 80 miles for lunch over some of the most scenic roads and Inveraray has chargers 😁👍 My memories of the classic was at 70 mph you couldn’t speak to each other in the car this will be different 😂

Build quality and finish are simply amazing! Being a total mini fan, seeing that parked on the side of the road it's only the lack of exhaust that gives anything away. Your conversion is absolutely drop dead gorgeous! It is the ultimate sleeper car. I love the power and speed and I especially love the performance. The fact that you were able to keep the passenger compartment in tact and the exterior looking basically stock, with the exception of those fabulous tires, just blew me away. If we were in better health and stronger financially, I would do this! My lady love's first car was a Mini and even when she talks of it today, her eyes get that dreamy look of pleasure in them (obviously, her favourite car ever). I was impressed with everything about this car, but, of the whole video, the part that impressed me most was at the very end of the video when you were standing side by side, with the car centered between you in the background. The grins on your faces involved your whole bodies! I honestly thought that you were going to wet yourselves in the most pleasurable adult way. BTW, I gave you a thumbs up and subscribed. Quite simply, my favourite car of all time. Almost any former classic Mini owner misses their old car, at least a little bit. Mine was a 1964 Austin 850. That brought it all back. Just the way a proper BMC Mini sits on the road and goes, and makes me grin from ear to ear. And this one has the dream inside it. It's very powerful. First the sound of an original "A" series engine, paired up with a straight cut box and twin webers. The whine they produce and the sound of the carbs taking in the air through the filters when you accelerate and the rumble of an RC40 (or similar) exhaust. Second was the smell. I was recently looking at a 1932 Plymouth sedan that I actually thought of doing this very thing with. If I do it, I am considering adding one option. Instead of using these massive battery sleds that will eventually go bad and need replacement, I am looking to add a small diesel generator in the engine bay to provide the voltage necessary to drive the electrical motors. It will use a fraction of what a conventional engine would and with the size of a normal fuel tank, the range might be as much as 1000 miles per tank. As it would be diesel, it could also be retrofitted to operate on biodiesel, thus allowing me to get away from the grips of the oil companies. Lastly, it will sound a bit like the old "putt, putt" engines from back in the day, and will completely disguise what it is capable of. The ultimate sleeper!
@stupitdog96862 жыл бұрын
I thought of this idea back in the 1970's. Unfortunatly it aparently won't work! You need to produce way more power than a "putt, putt" engine ever could ...... Maybe a gas turbine ...?
@bezaleeluk36962 жыл бұрын
the idea works so well with diesel/electric trains because the wheels are solid steel and have very little rolling resistance but pneumatic tires on cars are so inefficient you will lose a lot of power in them alone.

What a fantastic car. I would just say about the 0-60, it never tells the whole story about a cars feel any way, but two things to mention in this particular case. One, it is severely limited in how much of the power it can put down and so it will never reach its potential. Two, as anyone who has driven an electric car will tell you, they are quicker than an ICE car with the same power to weight ratio as they have all the torque available everywhere, none of this climbing up torque curves, and they never waste time changing gears. I imagine this would be really, really quick in real world driving compared to what the 0-60 time suggests.
@PetrolPed2 жыл бұрын
It is indeed Tim. Getting it off the line better needs better calibration of the Tesla TC, warmer tyres and just one person in the car. As you say though the mid range acceleration is awesome 👌

Whilst I can really appreciate all the hard work and the brilliant finished result I don’t think I could ever lose the A series engine in mine. Brilliant isn't it. It's not 300hp (If you've ever driven any of the Era's with the boost turned up that destroy a Jk dog box in less than 30miles, you know what even 180bhp does) but who cares, totally usable, practical brilliant. Did I say brilliant 🙂

Yep, it’s a great colour. Having thrashed and competed with big A series powered minis in the past I really don’t miss the engine noise when your holding 300bhp in your hands. In any case over 90mph, Ped & I were shouting above the helical gear transmission whine, road & wind noise. Who said EV’s were quite? 👍

@@simonbenton5635 Ha ha Either a 45dcoe, a battery box away from the cab. Or a 48IDF spraying fuel over the screen, straight cut box, drop gears, semi helical cwp and a intercom that didn't work. Later Intercomp were gods. Looking back it was fun at the time, but what a environmental disaster🤔

@@gothicpagan.666 having had quite a few turbo minis from 150 to 220bhp I know that you are right in your assumption however I feel that you are missing the fact this tesla powered Mini has traction control so its reducing the power to suit the capabilities of the minis dynamics, suspension tyres etc. Fit a set of decent 13" slicks and sort out the suspension then we'll see it's true capabilities, a good test would be from 40 to 100mph

I used to race Minis on grass back in the day, both literally and figuratively. It was inexpensive, fun racing with the only mods allowed being 1/10th of an inch skimmed off the head (Yes, seriously) and double valve springs to prevent valve bounce at the increased revs. The first race of the season wasn't too choice as the field had been previously inhabited by cows. Yep, it was a sh*t show. At the end of this video, my face was aching as I realised I had been grinning right through the video. Good job, it flooded me with nostalgia.

I have built a '66 Mini with a rear mounted Tesla performance LDU. With wide 19" wheels/tires is does 0-60 in 3 sec. That's how we do it in SoCal.
@TheEulerID2 жыл бұрын
I know that the ambition was to keep it Mini-like with the FWD, but with the lightness, the amount of torque and the load transfer to the rear under acceleration, you have to wonder about that decision. A moment's carelessness on the road and it could go very wrong, very quickly. Not, I suspect, a car for the inexperienced, and it would surely be a lot easier to drive with half the power and torque. I do wonder what an RWD conversion would have been like. Certainly a lot quicker off the line, but I guess it would have some handling issues all of its own.

I feel the same an a rwd ev classic mini has been my dream car for a while. But you have to admit the balls to go with 300hp through those little front tyres. I hope there is a mode to switch to 50hp for his daughters

@TheEulerID2 жыл бұрын
@@mesco8200 I imagine they will if they aren't sorted out properly, and I'm not sure a bike engine is well suited to a Mini.
