Morris Minor (George) setting the timing

Set timing on George the Morris Minor, the temperature gauge must be reading high as the water would be boiling over at 120.
Might have to drop the valtage but it say in instructions conetion is to a 12v.??

Timing should be 5 degrees before top dead centre for the 948cc or 3° btdc for the 1098cc that is static timing. If you remove the rocket cover and watch number 4 cylinder, when you wind the engine over in the starting handle to where the one of the rockers is just opening and the other just closing, that is top dead centre. I find that more accurate and less fiddly than a screwdriver down the plug hole method. The main thing is you got George running well. Well done

Great result. Seems like several classic car channels are removing the electronic ignition and going back to points. Good instructional video for anyone wanting to see how it's done.

Hi everyone managed to make a timing mark. The temperature gauge is reading a bit higher than it. Should but don't think it could be 120c or it would be boiling over?. Might be the valtage is to high but the instructions say connect to 12v. Thanks for watching 🤓👍

I do the timing by ear, it's like tuning a radio to get the best sound

Your temperature guage is capillary the 12v is only for illumination. When setting timing you should have the vacuum advance pipe disconnected from distributor and the pipe to carburettor plugged. 110 centigrade on your moggy is fine, the gauges aren't always accurate it more to show its going higher than where it normally sits.

hi mate i bought a digital readout temp gauge with a sensor cable tied to top hose u can set the unit/light to warn u at 88c so u can keep a eye on things (for the 51 splitty which has no gauge for water. curiuos about timing i havent done my 948 yet, have to find out why its so rich first! ,al
