I wanted to test out my paint removal and paint options so I'm having a crack at one of the rear doors. I'm going for a bare metal respray so all the old paint is coming off followed by new primer and top coats.
The car is a 1958 Morris Minor 1000 with the 948cc engine. Last WOF was in 1995 and has been parked up ever since.

If you stand back and look at the spray pattern, it appears as if you have the spray fan too narrow and you are getting stripes in your coats (uneven coverage). Open up the spray fan and draw the gun back a bit so as to get a more even coverage. Also, use the premium acrylic thinners for your spraying and the GP one for cleaning. You are going to invest a lot of money in your car body and you don't want the base or top coats compromised for the sake of an extra $10 per 4 litres of thinner! BTW, are you sponsored by Supercheap?

Interesting to watch. I've never yet sprayed any bodywork, always brush painted the cabs of my old lorries. I do sometimes use an electric sprayer when doing the chassis though, and gets results I'm happy with. One day I think I should have a bash at spraying bodywork.

Nice job! Now you've got all the joy of hours and hours of sanding primer ahead of you 😆 A couple of tips from one beginner to another (I've just finished spraying my first project, working on video editing now!), if I may: Firstly, get yourself a better water trap; the screw in one you have is fine for little jobs and single panels, but I found when painting the actual body the trap I had collected an alarming amount of water - probably a good 20ml or so, too much for the screw in ones to handle anyway. The single stage ones are fairly cheap. Secondly, when you're flatting back the primer, wet the panel with panel wipe or acetone occasionally so it's shiny - you'll be much better able to see any imperfections in your bodywork before you paint it. And believe me, there will be imperfections. So, so many... 😱😮 Keep up the good work, looking forward to seeing the Moggie finished!

Mate, I'm not a tradesman but self taught and have done a fair bit of spraying. You need to get more paint coming out of the gun and get further back. You are way too close. Try to slow it down a bit. Watch where the paint is hitting the job right behind the fan and you'll see if you have it right. Don't look where you are going. Look where you have been. Theres only millimeters in it but that is where you need to focus. cheers mate and all the best with the rest of it.

I'm doing much the same job on a very similar Morrie just a few hundred kms south of you to keep me busy during lockdown. It's my mums old car shes had for 35 odd years. I am learning as I go too and have a slightly different approach. Looking forward to more updates on your project

Enamel thinner is mineral turpentine or White spirits, as it's called in the UK. For use with oil enamel paints and varnish. Use lacquer thinners for cellulose based primers and lacquers. Then all will be well. Have fun. Love your project.

Not a criticism but I have to agree with Terry Reeves you appear to be spraying far to close, you should possibly turn the air pressure up to give you a wider fan from your spray gun.Dont forget to use your paint filters .👍🇬🇧
@mycarprobs6688

You would probably want to give the panels a coat of etch primer first , or possibly even epoxy primer as it is quite thick compared to the etch but still serves the same purpose. Considering you have the panels stripped to bare metal, it would be ideal.
@mycarprobs6688
@mycarprobs6688 4 жыл бұрын
Most primers are just as good without too much thinner in them, especially for filling up things like grinding marks and body filler repairs. That thinner is not made for that particular primer. considering it is the same brand it's surprising how it reacted so quickly. The 25 Ltr drums of gunwash or standard thinners, is a good all round thinner for cleaning the gun out and works with most of the 2k primers in the market.

dont know if you have a bunnings store over in kiwi land but if you do go get some clip on spouts they clip to the lip of the tin and form a spout so the paint doesn't fill the recess for the lid i never use a flap disc for stripping paint like that either paint strip it or use 40 grit half sander sheets becarefull using flap disc's on line edges as they tend to bite into the edge making it distorted

Good job! What type of disk are you using in the grinder? I was worried about leaving deep scratches in my project that wouldn't be covered by the primer and opted to sand by hand (madness!😭). Two weeks of wax on wax off and I went back to the engine. 😂
@Badgertronix

Flap disks are the way to go. I used 40 to 120 grit and they take paint off really easily. Be careful with the 40 grits, they are quite harsh
