Dermot I feel your pain - what I find helps when welding thin steel is to use a clean 6mm copper plate but If the steel has corrosion in the grain even this won’t help and it must come out - do I think you are doing the right thing! Also I phosphate treat all the steel at the end of the day’s session to keep the rust out and see how bad the steel is it it goes black it is usually rotten so I get to see what I am heading into!

I dont have any copper but I intend to buy some, I will feel better once i have found some decent steel to weld to. Thanks for the advice, much appreciated. Dermot.

Dermot I should explain what I mean by finding my way with phosphate! I clean all the steel in the areas I am interested in with a wire brush on the angle grinder then phosphate that. Even if the steel is shining often the next morning there are black patches. I then wire brush these off as well sometimes it can take four operations in bad areas. It is inter granular rust and these area can dissolve and be heavily pitted- quite often have to cut them out but it kind off helps navigate through the invisible corrosion. The major benefit is once this is done the welding is much cleaner you don’t get all those holes and spatter. The bad side is as you say it is always far worse than it should be! And by the way where did you find that nifty detent compression tool - yes I got gearboxes to do so thanks for the video on that!

Dennis, I hope so, the thin metal is just a pain to sort, some of it I could rip with my hands. I just keep saying it will be solid once it's done.Hopefully.

Nice work. I understand you didn’t expect it to be as bad. But it will be right when you done it.

It's getting there slowly, gets me down when I come across yet more rust but hopefully I will find most of it,hopefully.😁

Dermot, great film thanks. My Clarence has very similiar issues round rear wheel arches. Really struggled to get the inner wing repair panel and wheel arch flange to fit so as was suggested on MMOC forum, lots of fettling needed. Only wish I'd video'd the work of done. Thanks again

@@dermotmurray4658 I notice your repair flange had 3 faces which seems a much better solution than the ones i bought which had 2 faces. Still both sides are done after a lot of struggling.

@@richardbradford7331 yes the flanges I have are from Andrew Eggleton and are a very good fit.
