On original assembly, the bolts holding the master cylinder in place are fed in from the outside into the chassis leg after which, the torsion bar is fitted thereby preventing the withdrawal of the master cylinder bolts. You can use a steel bar to bend the torsion bar enough to allow the removal of the bolts. On reassembly, put the bolts in from the other side of the chassis leg. There is enough room before the torsion bar to locate the nuts. Good luck!

@@thebarleymow operation complete! Cheers for that mate - ended up using a chunky claw hammer to pull down on the bar and it was surprisingly easy! I’ve ran out of time for today, so cylinder will be taken out tomorrow and replaced and I’ll go from there…fingers crossed it’s the end of the brake woes!

I don’t think that’s the original master cylinder the cover should have brass screws in not bolts
