A quick dive trip turned into a real hassle, but in the end we found a great spot to dive at Morrison Springs. This was our first chance to dive springs and check out a couple of small caves.

On our bucket list. Hopefully soon. Also on the bucket list is diving the kelp beds in Catalina.

It's worth checking out. Before making the trip make sure the area hasn't received too much rain. if it does the Choctawhatchee River will back up all the way to Morrison Springs and give the surface a tea color. I just got back from there in June and that was the case. Luckily I was just underwater metal detecting and didn't need great visibility.

I think I dove that when I was at Eglin... 2001ish. Got certified at Scubatech in Destin while I was down there for school. Loved that area of Florida. Digging your videos, let’s me live vicariously through you. Like to start diving again and getting out to live (more of) my own adventures.

Glad you enjoyed the video. I did the same thing. I got certified back in 1992, but then let it fall to the side. Really glad I've picked it up again. Very peaceful under the surface.

I think it's an incredible place for a free diver. A little something for most levels of freediver . Personally, I would go in the off season so you can have it mostly to yourselves. Also if you dont mind paying an entry fee, go check out The Vortex Springs not far from Morrison Springs.

Any advice for a beginner freediver (me, 65 year old man) going there? GoPro8 HERO!

Be prepared for the cold water, but it's totally doable for a freediver. The spring offers several options for freedivers of different levels. There is a dive platform around 20 feet that is great for just hanging out practicing your breath holds, the first cavern is around 40 feet down, big opening, and goes about 40 feet back with no current. There is even air on the roof of the cavern. Then for more advanced freedivers there is the lower cavern around 70 feet. It has a narrow entrance with a strong current. In the shallows there are lots of fish to watch while you practice your sport. Hope you get lots of enjoyment out of it. The fall will have less crowds, but summer time you will run into other freedivers of like mind.

Man I wish I did. I'll be down there with one or both of my daughters mid to late July to do it again. Had a co-worker retire and move just north of Navarre. Great place to be as far as I can tell.

Is there a dive shop close enough by there to rent gear from?
@mathewdavis-adventuresandd66434 жыл бұрын
WhiteHemi Chris there is a dive shop near there. It’s called Vortex Springs across the highway from Morrison Spring. Vortex is normally a pay to enter complex but you can contact them to see if you can just get your tanks filled. Honestly though, once you see the Vortex water you will want to dive there also. Very nice people at the Vortex

Was 3mm wet suit enough to stay warm?
@mathewdavis-adventuresandd66432 жыл бұрын
It was for me and I was very comfortable. My first time I dove the spring with nothing but swim trunks, that was freaking cold. I would recommend thicker than 3mm for people that are prone to chilling easily.

How deep was the dive?

My daughter and sister stopped just shy of 70'. But another diver told me it went down into the nineties.
