LYRICS
I am a poor, freezingly cold soul
So far from where I intended to go
Scavenging through life's very constant lulls
So far from where I'm determined to go
Wish I knew the way to reach the one I love
There is no way
Wish I had the charm to attract the one I love
But, you see, I've got no charm
Tonight I've consumed much more than I can hold
Oh this is very clear to you
And you can tell I have never really loved
You can tell, by the way, I sleep all day
And all of my life no-one gave me anything
No-one has ever given me anything
My love is as sharp as a needle in your eye
You must be such a fool to pass me by

This version is eons better than the original for me, purely because of the airiness of the production on this version. Gives it a much more isolated/aimless feeling that I think matches the theme of the song perfectly.

That's the thing about Morrissey; his lyrics seem often to speak to his listeners on an almost personal, intimate level. For instance, 'Late Night, Maudlin Street' could be a word-for-word retelling of my own banal boyhood growing up in a non-descript English town. For me personally, no other artist can do this - just reach in and directly speak to one's own life experiences. It's just uncanny. And this song is no exception, either.

It's not "about depression". It's that feeling of hopelessness that we all feel at some point in our lives, when all we want to do is stay in bed and wish the world away and be alone. It's called the "human condition" and no pills or therapy can cure you of being a human.

You saw the name "Morrissey" and you think Irish connection, Anthony Seamus Morrissey, finest pigsty muckraker I ever had the pleasure of striking up a ditty with. If you're listening Anthony, I vicariously dedicate this tune to you, as you used to murder it over the odd pint, and hope that the donkey are less wet in Australia than in West Connemara. @@AlsatianCousin That's actually a really good comparison to Still Ill. Both really strong and dark lyrics but with a pithy title - he does like to mess with expectations, just like how every Smiths song sounds upbeat until you actually listen to the words haha.

The one Mozza song I can't get on board with. Delivered so flatly despite the romantic music backdrop. The "No one has given me anything" line really annoys me when you think about how his mum supported him as he didn't work. Unless he means in a romantic sense, in which case what an entitled thing to say! There was more charm in 'I am human and I need to be loved' if that's what he was going for.
@Zizzyyzz

IMO mum doesn't count - that's what parents are SUPPOSED to do. Thinking this is more about the people in his or someone's life that were supposed to be friends but turned out to be not so friendly. True friends give because they want to - not because it's owed P.D.M.

I used to think this too .. it was almost a perfect song but that one line made me go "hang on, thats just not true". But then I began wondering whether its sung knowingly. Almost in a self-pity way. He, the person writing the song knows he the support he's had (even if he does like to talk about how its never been there) ... but he's singing from a place of deep depression where people can be blinded to logic and rationale. Where things like "people are there to help me, people love me" can be so difficult to believe that you just simply find it easier to assuming its the truth.
