Love that last line --- "Are there any groups we haven't offended". Yes, Mort --- the intelligent ones.

R.I.P. I met Mr. Sahl at my old favorite hangout, Charlie O's in the valley. It was a cool little jazz club that featured really good musicians. I knew he knew about as much on the Kennedy Assassination as anyone on the planet. A few years back I had read Norman Mailer's novel, Harlot's Ghost. It centered around the history of the C.I.A. and how a conspiracy about the assassination might have come about. A huge book, (the longest novel I've ever read) and it ended with Part 1. Part 2 never came out, and I had read that Norman Mailer now believed in the lone assassin theory. Which was a shock to me. So I asked Mort Sahl about it, and he immediately dove into it, saying Norman Mailer's long time confident and producer was a plant from the C.I.A. and had been working on Mr. Mailer all this time. I thought that might have been dubious at best, but I did not want to bother him with a million follow-up questions, so I let it go, but in his day, Mort Sahl was a vibrant human voice in our culture.

Substitute Joe Biden for Richard Nixon [to say nothing of The FBI], and -other than that Biden's intellect couldn't shine Nixon's wingtips- the prescience / parallels 50+ years on are eerie.

Mort was never as funny, clever or intellectual as he thought. Waving a newspaper around doesn't help. Rush Limbaugh was the far better, smarter political satirist, personal politics aside. Mort just kind of broke new ground because he wasn't the typical comic of his time cracking mother-in-law and family jokes like Hope and George Burns.

@@Jesuswtf I'm a history professor and published author of nonfiction and never found Mort Sahl funny. Too dry for my tastes. When it comes to this genre, I prefer Lenny Bruce as I tend to have a preference for comedians who tell stories and do different voices and characters. But I don't knock people who disagree with me on this issue. Like food and music, tastes in comedy are subjective and personal.
