Shang Tsung (Chinese: 尚宗) is a character in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series. A powerful, soul-stealing sorcerer, Shang Tsung is a celebrated villain of the series and served as the host for the traditional Mortal Kombat tournament in the original and alternate timelines. While he has served as a secondary antagonist of the franchise alongside Quan Chi, forming what is known as The Deadly Alliance, Shang Tsung is one of the three main antagonist of the franchise alongside Shao Kahn and Shinnok.
Shang Tsung made his debut as one of the few original characters in the first Mortal Kombat arcade game, in which he served as the main antagonist and the unplayable final boss. He made his playable debut in Mortal Kombat II, where he serves as the secondary antagonist and sub-boss. He later serves as the titular antagonist of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance alongside Quan Chi. He would return in the franchise's reboot, Mortal Kombat (2011), once again serving as the secondary antagonist alongside Quan Chi while being a secondary sub-boss before Kintaro and Goro in the Arcade.
Shang Tsung returned in Mortal Kombat 11 as the guide in the game's Krypt and as a DLC character, being the first character available in the Kombat Pack. He later serves as the main antagonist of the Aftermath Story Mode expansion.
A new version of Shang Tsung returns in Mortal Kombat 1 as a pre-order bonus character, serving as the secondary antagonist in the game's Story Mode, a role he shares with a new version of Quan Chi. A counterpart from the previous timeline also appears, serving as the main antagonist of the game's Story Mode.
A powerful, deadly sorcerer and one of the primary villains in the Mortal Kombat franchise, Shang Tsung is a shape-shifter who needs to consume souls in order to sustain his health and life. In the Mortal Kombat series, he is the epitome of cunning and decadence, as symbolized by his preference for lavish parties, grand palaces, and stylish clothing. Unlike the crude Shao Kahn, this bombast is a facade, disguising Shang Tsung's true intellectual and mental sophistication. Despite this, he is usually depicted as Shao Kahn's subordinate, following whatever orders the Emperor give him. Through sorcery and experimentation, he is the creator of Meat and the half-Tarkatan Mileena. Due to being the maker of Kronika's Crown, he is one of the few mortals with the ability to use it without strain on his body, something not even the immortal Fujin could do.
Much like Shao Kahn, as a major antagonist to the franchise, Shang Tsung has made many allies while also drawing the ire to many of the protagonists of the series. Goro and Reptile are often depicted as close allies to the sorcerer, the former being his prized Champion while the latter as his personal bodyguard. He is the arch-nemesis of Liu Kang, which in turn has brought him into conflict with other members of the Shaolin Monks such as Kung Lao, due to the sorcerer's hand in killing his ancestor, The Great Kung Lao. Despite his hostilities towards Earthrealm and its inhabitants, he is respectful of that of Raiden, often referring to him as "Lord Raiden". He is also responsible for blinding the telekinetic swordsman Kenshi.
Shang Tsung's allegiance to Shao Kahn granted him the status of a free roaming sorcerer. As such, he is able to move between realms without detection by the Elder Gods or local deities, an ability which has granted him many opportunities to commit atrocities over the centuries. Only Delia, Shinnok, Shao Kahn, and Quan Chi can match Shang Tsung's skills as a sorcerer.
In the new timeline, Shang Tsung started off as a disguised old man merchant selling quack cures and fake medicines only to get exposed by an angry villager about his schemes. That night, he was approached by a mysterious benefactor called Damashi who offers him to become the greatest sorcerer to which Shang Tsung accepted the offer.

Many thanks to Alan Lee for his voice acting of such a legendary character as Shang Tsung. He voiced it in his own way, and it seems to me on a par with the work of Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa. I sometimes couldn't distinguish his voice from that of Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa. Sometimes listening to his voice, I immediately have a flashback image of Shang Tsung, which Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa performed in Mortal Kombat 1995.
