It was mind-blowing for the time. I was about 11 when the first Mortal Kombat came out, and it was everywhere. The MK franchise in the early-mid 90s wasn't just "successful" or "extremely popular", it was a worldwide phenomenon. The 90s was an amazing decade for gamers. The good old days. I'm extremely grateful that I got to experience it myself.

I remember crowding around this arcade game before school at the bodega across the street. Funny to think about little kids paying in to play the best player, like a bunch of old men at a pool hall. Then when it came to home systems, seeing the commercials for it, the feeling of anticipation for the release...what an awesome time to be a kid and a gamer! Not many things excite me in the same way anymore. Pathetic? Probably. But to me, those are some great memories.

Yeah, agreed. Digitized graphics - to me - give something a rather grungy and interesting feel to it. The first game I played as a kid was Mortal Kombat 2 on Genesis, and my God, those graphics still give me some chills. I think the games just felt more real, like Midway had intended, and it gives a really good presentation to the first few games. I mean, in Deadly Alliance, you pull someone's skeleton out (Sub-Zero), it's like, "eh", but if you did it in MK3 (Kano), you're like, "Wow - FUCK!"

@xtrmst_012 Eh, trust me, after X, you're not missing anything, really. Stick to the fan games, like MKP, to really keep the vibe going, if you want something modern-retro. :)

@xtrmst_012 I feel that, I think after Armageddon, the series should have just... ended... it would have been a hell of a lot more graceful, considering what happened to it now... Yeah, I feel the hardest part of learning how to code and work with games, especially on an amateur level, is finding the right resources and help. Personally, I'd say if you're still interested, I'm sure Mortal Kombat Addict on KZbin would be more than happy to give you some leads on how to work in MUGEN, if you try to get in touch with him. :) www.youtube.com/@MKAddict

Besides Boon, Tobias, Forden and the rest of the technical team, the ones that really made the game possible were the mo-cap actors. They were the real stars here by giving the MK games their distinctive look. The 3D games are also great, and I like 'em a lot, but they lost that special something that made the 2D MKs (MKM:SZ included) so unique: the digitalized graphics of real actors.

@mlopinto2k1 They do use Motion Capture today. In fact they use it more nowadays than they ever have in the past, in movies, as well as videogames. And it's almost exclusively used in conjunction with the "3D bullshit" you seem to dislike. Although,"Motion Capture"wasn't what was going on in this video. This process has never been given an official name, to my knowledge, but the product is called "Digitized Sprites". The end result is only a 2D image, so it has no application in most games today.
