But then again, the reality of the matter was the Switch port was an afterthought. when MK1 began development, it was most likely not in the cards. A corporate guy came in the studios in early January 2023 and said oh yeah, this game should have a Switch version available on launch good luck haha. The switch has limitations, I wont lie, but dont charge the same price for a lesser product. It could have used a bit more time in the oven.

Absolutely, $70 is a bit much for a port that does not deliver what was intended, but the gaming industry has been doing this for ages. Back in the days when Nintendo & Sage were at war. Segas big titles ran $100 easy. Nintendos big names like Super Mario 3 & Super Contra ran for $85. The methods are the same. You will pay asking price for current games or wait for a price drop.

Those carts came in boxes and/or sleeves with a manual. Sometimes a colored manual. The only game that Sega sold for $100 was Virtua Racing. That was due to the SVP chip within the cartridge. But most games from both companies averaged at $70. When CD became the format of choice, price dropped to $50 and later raised to $60. Made sense since CDs were MUCH cheaper to manufacture than carts, and still came in cases WITH manual. Now a day, I'm kind of OK with physical media games being sold for $70. But now they charge $70 for digital only games (no physical media, no manuals, no cases (which mean they save A LOT of money), and can't even manage to ship a game in a complete state. This has been a very negative trend from game developers and publishers. And then they try to charge the same price for an inferior product on top of that. It's nuts.

@@McDob I never said I disagreed with that. The Switch is waaay beyond obsolete hardware-wise. But one thing that really grinds my gears is how last-gen hardware used to be pushed to the brink of TORTUROUS EXHAUSTION with games like GTA V and The Last of Us on PS3 with a total of 512MB RAM. Heck, even Mortal Kombat 9's PS Vita port, whilst imfamous for looking like shit, played at a stable 60FPS without literally any stutter, and didn't even look that bad for a system from that time, size and most importantly, hardware. You can't tell me they couldn't at least get the Switch port to run properly given the insane achievements in the past with Handhelds. Even the PC version is dogshit optimization-wise, a lot of high-end ones are struggling and even the Steam Deck is having an extremely rough time. Porting games got lazy as fuck lately. And people keep blaming hardware for it. When Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 got ported to the Xbox that had 64MB of RAM, everyone used to be amazed, because it was done incredibly well for what it tried to achieve. Yet, here we are with Mortal Kombat 1 on Switch not only looking like absolute ass, playing like putrid dogshit with the unstable framerate, but it even lacks content (Invasion). This situation literally can't get any more retarded. Oh, right, thr $70 price tag... And to rub salt in the wound, PC is the worst in this regard. Just look at the PC port of Star Wars Jedi Survivors...at this point, all things considered I'm even surprised the Switch got this good amount of attention from the people porting it. As much as it is a disappointment now, just imagine how much worse it could have been. Because this is it : this is what ported gamds have become. Lowering expectstions and instead of thinking what could have gotten better, we're thinking of what could have gone worse.

You can definitely see that they had to remodel stuff so that the Switch can process the game. When you compare the stages, some things have been removed or redesigned. They also made changes to some floors or pathways, or they reposition things. Even removing some animations of certain background objects.

What's weird to me is how inconsistent it is. Some of the background and character models are acceptable, especially for a weaker handheld system. But others are hideous and barely look PS2-quality. Architecture improvements would also be a huge benefit. It's well known the ps4's Jaguar cpu sucks to the point the steam decks's CPU can out perform it or even most smartphone CPUs these days. pair that with dlss 3 and even with say the exact same specs as a steamdeck it would outperform it.

From what I've read, M1K made the jump from MK11's Unreal Engine 3 to Unreal Engine 4, which in turn scales extremely poorly with lower-end hardware if other UE4 Switch games are of any indication. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and Destroy all Humans are probably the least offensive UE4 Switch ports, though games like Rad Rodgers, Redout, and M1K are the more typical result of porting a UE4 multiplatform game to Nintendo's hardware.

Damn... This reminds me of when MK9 came out on the PSVita. Is it impressive that they managed to shove that game and all it's features in it? Yes. Does it look good? Absolutely not. But the PSVita was 100% a handheld so we cut it some slack. The Switch is an underpowered tablet 2 generations behind in terms of graphical capabilities. In more practical terms, this is more like "How would MK1 look on a PS3/360" kind of situation.

MK1 would not even be scalable to PS3/360 in the first place. The Switch GPU is two generations ahead of those platforms and also has more memory plus a more efficient CPU - which is why this game alongside other current gen ones are feasible in the first place.

The developer could have easily adjusted the textures in the Switch version. At least like Mario Kart 8, put an additional texture on top. There would have been more visually possible for the Switch. The change on the Switch between 30 and 60 frames is ok, i think they use Double Buffer. The animation speed with 60 frames was optimize for the look of 30fps I hope my English is enough, it's not my native language

ehhh the devs worked hard for it. Does it look laughable? Yes. But that doesn't remove the fact they did their job. As for full price, surely some sellers have it for lower than $70 because I see it around 50 for every platforms.. And graphics don't equal work. Witcher 3 on Switch looks silly. Doom looks foggy as hell. They still play well. The gameplay is there.

For hardware somewhere between PS3 and PS4, the Switch can still give a half decent facsimile of MK1. Still think it would've benefited from a little more development time though. Curious how it will compare to itself after some updates down the road.

Raw power on paper, is very similar to the 360/Wii U. However, due to it being a more modern chip it can support DirectX 11 lighting and a few other things which isn't possible on the 360. When used properly, it can mask low quality assets for the most part but Warner Bros wasn't even trying.
