Mortal Kombat 11 - Aftermath Story Review! The Good, The Bad And The Sindel

Hey guys
Welcome back to another Mortal Kombat 11 video, today since we are coming up to about a week since Aftermaths release, In todays video I will be breaking down the story and talking about my own personal thoughts and feelings about It
Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath DLC will be taking the story to all-new highs with a cinematic story centering around Fujin and Shang Tsung whilst the new keeper of time and protector of Earthrealm Liu Kang oversees the misson, It will have unlikely allies and familiar foes come together to forge a new history as the fate of two worlds hang in the balance.
I dont cover every single nook and cranny of Aftermaths story but In this review I personally wanted to point out every problem that I myself either liked or didnt enjoy, Aftermaths stuff Is an entertaining ride but I can defintely see It as a mixed bag and an experience that Is really going to vary from person to person!

A few years ago, I remember thinking “why don’t we ever play as the villains in the main story?” I quickly realized why when I played Aftermath. I legit felt like shit while Shao Kahn was smashing Liu Kang’s legs in.

That's the thing though. From a writing standpoint, it _should_ happen. Otherwise you end with villains that have no threat. Like the original Skeletor or Team Rocket.

That’s the thing though... it still COULD have happened without us having to actually play as the villains and do it ourselves.. I agree from a story standpoint and making the villains look more competent it needed to happen but I didn’t like it being done by ME at all. Cutscenes would have worked - and like he mentioned, cutscenes would have made them look cooler and more threatening anyway. I crushed my soul like Shao Kahn crushed Liu kangs legs 😢 😂

I loved it! I hate that it happened to liu, but Shang’s whole chapter was amazing and felt so refreshing to play as the villain in mk.

Sheeva and Fujin relly shined, loved how we finally got to know their personality traits and backstory

I had to go through the story line again, but Fujin talked to Liu Kang in the beginning. This means Fujin knew about Liu Kangs plan. When he gave Raiden the crown he knew it was Shang Tsung.(or at least he knew Shang Tsung was gonna get the crown). It make me look at the story in a whole new light.

I already saw her as a fearsome character because she was a toned down Goro but the dlc really fleshed her out. Not saying that being a toned down Goro is bad but she’s literally the only shoukan who wasn’t a boss or midboss. I think Fujin said it better, “Wearing a crown has made you wiser.”

Sindel was more of a badass in this than Shao Khan. She was his equal if not slightly superior. Outside of NetherRealm studios shoehorning in Sindel's "privilege" over and over again (count how many times she says privilege), i much prefer this version over the brainwashed damsel in distress in previous mk games.

TY from the 5th dimension, no. Her backstory was the exact same in the MK9 soft reboot. NRS has even said they did a complete retcon for Sindel in MK11, since her story was the same in MK9 as it was in the OG games. I personally liked her old sorry better. Now she’s just a bland, one note character with absolutely zero character arc. NRS tried to say that now she acts more like what she looks like but that’s something I always loved about Sindel - she was more than just what she looked like. To go along with the phrase “you can’t always judge a book by its cover”. Now she’s just so...typical villain and it’s boring

Kronika looked terribly weak... I kept reminding myself that she expended tremendous amounts of power summoning the alternate timelines and gathering her power into the hourglass. I think that should have been stated move obviously. "You are fortunate! Were my power not tied up in my hourglass, I wouldn't even remember ending your existence..."

How the hell does an elder god that controls all the elements,has the ability to grow larger than the earth itself and has chronokenesis + a titan that has ultimate control of time + the crown lose to fire god liu kang? @@olofacosta3192 ah, I'm glad that I'm not the only one who think it's weird that despite all of these powers up she's still defeated with ease I mean yes liu kang and raiden are extremely powerful individually and even more if they fuse but to defeat a titan with the power of an elder god plus the crown( which can give to humans enough power to fight an elder god ) without trouble, yes it's odd.

They were really not very good at all in distinguishing how a Titan is stronger than an Elder God or even a regular Elemental God like Raiden or Fujin. Fire God Liu Kang shouldn't have been a match for the mother of Shinnok and Cetrion, yet Kronika's power set was pathetic, in both gameplay and cutscenes.

@@dominiquemendy6307 they could've easily fixed that by having Cetrion give her powers to liu kang. For one it makes Cetrion less generic and have her go out in a noble sacrifice. And two it actually makes sense for liu kang to then be able to beat kronika. However the writer's predicted(correctly unfourtunatly) that the fans would just accept liu kang beating everyone because he looks cool smh

She is without doubt the strongest female character and has been for ages. Let's not forget that not only is she super old (and therefore has had ages to sharpen her skills) she also took out a sizeable amount of the roster by herself in MK9. Nobody else has done that.

I enjoy Sindel as a villain. It's diffent. She fuckin killed nearly everyone back in mk9, and bewitched or not, that's the coolest thing she ever did, at least for me. And the interactions between her and Shao Kahn were great.

*this Well done for saying it. Sindel was great before... she's great now. It's different, yes but the only reason New Coke failed is because they did it too fast. We're all essentially drinking new Coke now and it's fine. I think her portrayal in aftermath was fantastic too. Her mocap actress and voice actress were super and I was actually quite endeared by her genuine love for Kahn... there's a lot to like. I know I've drifted off your point and you might not agree with everything I'm spewing forth but I like that you went against the vocal majority on this one. Good on ya.

Love the title of the vid.... 1+ Super awesome Mr. Tagawa performance 2+ Fight coreography 3+ Story phase 4+ Play as the bad guys although it hurts the heart.... 5+ Great good ending for new possible stories in the future 6+ Callbacks to past MK titles (deception intro, mythologies ref and others) 7+ DLC charscters focused 1- Sindel retcon, made for multiple reasons, and serves the story but is total disrespect to the character 2- Mistreatment of Kotal, great character but always pushed aside 3- Many plot holes prevent it from getting called cohesive (geras, take the crown off shang's hands, where is current Johnny and others left out)... Overall more positive than negative, I could argue 8/10, but I also agree with 7/10 for sure

I loved the whole Mk11 story. So engaging. It has family feeling, anger, betrayal, happiness, sadness, win, loss, we can literally feel the emotions in this story. I m ok with Sindel being villain, now I can digest this concept 🤣 Most of all, Fujin shined like Star. My favorite mk4 character.

My wife and I watched the full story on your channel and really enjoyed the husband/ wife dynamic between Sindel and Shao. I feel that Sindel is far more interesting as Shao's better half.

They absolutely did that character dirty, and there was no real reason for it. You put all that effort to build him up in the comics, and establish that he can beat Goro, Gorbak and can go toe to toe with a beefed up Reiko to him jobbing out to characters he had no business losing to. I mean how is a sun god getting beaten up in broad daylight in his own hometown by an upstart with less powers and experience.

I've been a Sindel fan since MK3 and her depiction in MK11 is by far the best and most respectful depiction she's ever had. Good Sindel never did anything, her story basically began and ended in MK3 and she spent every other game she wasn't playable in chains to whichever villain was in power at the time. Evil Sindel was just plain fun and the decision to truly make her Shao's equal was a good one. When it comes to Good Sindel, i think fans to cling to the idea they had of her potential rather than what the character actually was.

I personally don’t take issue with Sindel. For one, the old canon doesn’t even exist anymore, and I prefer the idea that she was always evil, but the historians mis-told her story because they were unaware of her treachery. I’ve learned that nothing is sacred in gaming... and far more significant things have been changed that this. But if you’re beholden to a timeline and story that technically doesn’t exist anymore... I enjoyed watching the story mode for Aftermath, I still love the original story mode for MK11, but it is nice to get an additional story. Shang Tsung was a great touch as the main villain, and I enjoyed seeing the revenant versions of Night wolf and Sindel. Sindel, I am still upset that they changed her back story. If she never wanted to take her own life away, than she would never had the motivation to create the spell that would keep Shau Kahn out of Earthrealm. Sindel is still a very fun character to play as and I enjoyed playing as Fujin. Honestly, I think of Aftermath as a complete WHAT IF story after we saw the ending of MK11'S main story.

I've been thinking about the whole "why is Sindel so strong" thing a lot too. I said the same thing about MK9 where it was obviously because she was infused with Shang Tsung's soul and all the souls he had as well. That makes sense, crazy power spike. But Kronika tells Cetrion, a literal elder god, that Sindel is "one of the few mortals who can harm" her. To me, that implies there's something special about Sindel that hasn't been explained yet. Is she a god/demigod of some kind? Some special magic she possesses that we don't know about? Is it something about being Edenian? I really hope NRS doesn't forget that plot thread and eventually gives us some insight into what that's all about.

I hate what they did to Kotal. Kotal to me was supposed to be the one who could rival Shao Kahn in strength. After Shoa Kahn's death in mk9 Kotal became the Kahn of outworld. That to me sounds like he should be a badass. After the ultimate boss of mk died Kotal was the one who became Kahn. He should've been treated like a Kahn in mk11 but he was treated like a joke. Great video but I'll try and list some of your cons listed in the video and find good points about them just to play Devil's advocate a bit. 1. Sindel- She was never a personal favorite of mine but that aside we already new about her retcon so no surprise there, but as for the rumors implied in-game they are just that, rumors: The only people that know what truly happened in Edenia are Sindel and Shao Khan, also maybe D'vorah. As for her power scaling, technically since her revenant was revived it is possible that she still had some of the power increase from MK9 but not all of it. Also Edenians are descended from the gods. Its possible that Sindel just had major potential but was never able to realize its full effect. 2. Kronika- Yes it made her seem like a joke when Netherrealm demons were able to hurt her, but everything else was consistent. She was beaten by Liu Kang combined with Raiden's power originally and she had her crown. In Aftermath, Shang Tsung had 1. absorbed Nightwolf, Raiden, and Fuijin's souls 2. Had the crown and 3. Had help from Shao Khan and Sindel ( I cant remember If he already betrayed them at this point. If he had they need to be listed in number 2's point.) so no Kronika did not seem incredibly weak, Shang Tsung was just OP. 3. Kotal Khan and the Soul Chamber- Yes I will agree that they don't seem to have a direction for him right now, but for the sake of argument Kotal actually plays a bigger role than we think. Shao Khan was willing to let Outworld be in war forever because it was fun for him. Kotal though brutally, actually brought a sense of order to a realm that never had it before. Though I wish we could've of seen more it NRS seems happy playing with their old toys for now. As for the Soul Chamber that's obvious to explain: Soul magic. We've seen it repair Shang Tsung for decades, now its just extended to more characters. As for those who might argue its not in Kotal's nature well your wrong because he already uses blood magic and has caused at least a genocide or 2 so its actually par for the course. These are just my takes on some of the cons listed in the video. I hope everyone has a great day/night.

I think it's pretty obvious that they planned and started working on Aftermath and created the Sindel ladder ending based on it. I wonder in retrospect if releasing her ending early was a mistake since it essentially worked as a spoiler for the story, but then again, I think people might have been even more angry at the DLC if this had been their first exposure to her rewritten character. I wonder if the "good" ending means that the next MK game will follow Kung Lao. If so, on one hand the prospect doesn't sound that exciting to me as a player, but on the other hand, it feels like it would be nice for his character to finally get the spotlight.

Two things.1) Time affects the gods differently, it wasn't said that time doesn't affect them at all. Raiden was still propelled forward in time during the time quake, it was just that 2 Raiden's couldn't exist at the same point in time. When fujin was sent back in time, his other self was stuck in the void. When he arrived in the kolosseum the other fujin could have disappeared but we don't know because they weren't in the same place. 2) The soul chamber was shown to have regenerative properties when Ermac was in it during MK9. It is correct that MK11 is the first time we saw other people be put into it who weren't one if khan's constructs, but it's always been implied that it had regenerative properties.

The only guess I have with Sindel being powerful is that she is the same Sindel that was power boosted by Shao Khan using Shang Tsung as a sacrifice in MK9. The longer the hair, the stronger they seem to be. (Evidence, notice how edenian men mostly have short hair and die in quick order while those with long hair stick around.) My ideal sequel would be set directly after the Lu kang aftermath ending and you would get to play as past characters like the great Kung Lao and past tournament members along with raiden/ fujin/ and fire god lu kang. Man, the story was awesome to me. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The cinematic feel of the cut scenes were amazing, specifically the scene in Sindel's throne room plotting with Shang Tsung. I watched that over so many times. I will admit that when I watch plot breakdown videos like this, it does reveal many mistakes and raises questions. However, overall, it is still a solid dlc story in my opinion. In fact, for those of us who don't necessarily play the game so much for competitive play, would like to see Netherrealm make more story focused content for future games. Honestly, it felt like I saw a movie, which was totally awesome. Keep up the good work and I can't wait to see more.

Also I didn't mind Kronica looking weak because we as players have already seen her get wrecked by Liu Kang. So using her to build up other villians who were the focus of the story was fine. I don't think they contradicted the time line rules for gods. They explain that there cannot be two versions of the same god at the same time. Before, Kronika was merging past and present which is why Dark Raiden disappeared. Now, when Fujin is sent back he was already trapped in the vod during this period so nothing happens to him. Beings like Cention and Kronika can still exist in the past, there just can't be multiple versions of them at the same time. Plus I don't think the story was meant to imply that Shao Khan somehow killed Geras permanently. He was just taken out if action long enough that he didn't have time to impact the rest of the story.

I’m not a big fan of her Retcon, but I for one am happy they portray Sindel as someone very powerful. She’s been portrayed in past games as what I would consider to be Sindel’s own view on Jerrod, a weak ruler and I never liked that. And as much as it plays a role, since this was revenant Sindel from MK9, she probably still retained Shang Tsung’s essence which made her strong in MK9 as well as being blessed with stronger powers as Shao Kahn’s empress. Somehow I think he would found a way to make her stronger. And Sindel kept up an appearance as a widow whom was forced into a marriage to Shao Kahn, which what makes me believe she was so easily believable in her words. She’s a master manipulator

In my opinion, the Liu Kang finale will not change Mortal Kombat's world much except for one detail: what if Liu Kang wanted to train the Great Kung Lao just to save him from the clash with Goro? So we would see a new Timeline in which there are all the characters we know (Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Sonya, Johnny, Kano ...) but with the Great Kung Lao still alive to defend Earthrealm. Screenwriters may invent that Liu Kang cannot wipe out people from existence, such as Shang Tsung or Shao Kahn, but he can model events in his favor to stop their conquest plans. This would explain what Liu Kang meant when he said to Shang Tsung "There will be no place for you in my new era": Shang Tsung will never rise to power, although it still exists.

I completely agree with you on your opinion of Kotal Kahn. I get the feeling like Netherrealm just don't know what to do with him, so they forced in a relationship with Jade and literally clapped their hands in succession like: 'Okay, done, Kotal has a 'story', continue!' But instead, he has reached the level of Jobber like Baraka in MK9. He can have such a good role, yet he does nothing but gets beaten by literally everyone. Shao Kahn 2 times, D'Vorah, Sheeva, Jade, he gets captured by Shao Kahn, gets held in a full nelson by Sheeva, and then he gets his head cut off. Dude got buffed in the game but in the entire MK11 story, he has been in a wheelchair. Also, you are literally the only one besides me, who has been asking this question as well. What annoyed me in Aftermath were the UNNESSASARY long shots of things. Here are some examples: Sindel falling to the ground and staying there like a moaning damsel. It was arkward and I can say many were thinking of this: Sindel can float you know 2nd was when Fujin and Nightwolf were carrying Sindels Coffin. It was long and UNNESSASARY. Fujin,Nightwolf, and Shang Tsung walking out of the portal at the beginning.

I think Aftermath was great. Being the villains definitely was fun. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing all of Shao Kahn's scenes. I always picked him when he came up. It felt so satisfying to destroy the Cage family with Shao Kahn. I actually spoke aloud "where's your plot device now?" I even enjoyed it when Shang Tsung was beating everyone. I even picked his ending because the bad guys actually won. So I think it was fun. Wish Shang Tsung's ending will get expanded upon in the future. I think it'd be clever of the Orderrealm and Chaosrealm allied up to battle Shang Tsung. Plus it'd be a nice segway to get Havik and Hotaru as playable.

I liked this. My main issue was how they made Shao Kahn that strong, when he wasnt as powerful in the original story. He should have been that powerful to begin with. But as they established that he wasn't, it was just random that he lost to Kitana in a straight up fight, but then kills most of the kast in Aftermath. Of course Sindel's retcon was poorly executed. But other than that, Aftermath was good, and something that NRA should be proud of; and it was a great treat for fans.

I’d have been happy if Sindel, Shao or Shang had used the crown to bring Mileena back to pit her against Kitana, thus taking her place as their “real” daughter. But as a consequence, being who she is as an evil sort, Sindel demands too much attention from Shao which leads to Mileena getting super jealous which then causes a dispute between her and Sindel, forcing Shao to choose between them. Which results in Mileena being chosen, allowing Sindel to come to her senses when Kitana says to her “Mother, I told you he didn’t love you”, and hence making a REAL amends with Kitana allowing her good side to be restored.
