LORE!!! Kotal, or known as Ko’atal within his race, was born of Osh-Tekk royalty and was the son of Kotal K’etz, the leader of the Osh-Tekk people. As a child, Kotal witnessed the conquering of his people by the Outworld emperor, Shao Kahn. Years passed by and Kotal became angry with his father for letting their people be ruled over instead of fighting back. In response, his father gave him the option to rule over the Osh-Tekk if Kotal were to survive the “realmwalk,” a sort of passage of rites for Kotal in which he must survive the deadly climates of Earthrealm. By using the sacred portal stone, an artifact that had been passed down through Osh-Tekk culture and allowed passage through the realms, Kotal ventured to Earthrealm to trek through harsh deserts, snowy mountains and dense jungles until he stumbled upon the Mayan civilization in South America. The Mayans witnessed his incredible strength and worshipped him as a god. Kotal taught them to devour the hearts of their enemies to give them strength, as the Osh-Tekk did. For years, the Mayans slain their enemies with the aid of the War God but eventually, there were no more enemies to face. Kotal returned to a disappointed Kotal K’etz, who told Kotal that he had essentially killed off the Mayans through his embellishment of power. Disgruntled by his sour homecoming, Kotal took the portal stone and left back to Earthrealm, only to discover that the Mayans had been dying off due to the diseases their enemies carried within their blood. A humbled Kotal soon returned to Outworld and became a revered general in Shao Kahn’s army.
