The Mortal Kombat development team -- both during the Midway era and the NetherRealm Studios days -- has a history of taking rumors and turning them into reality! On today's livestream, I go through a number of them, including Ermac, Skarlet, Kano's frickin' laser beam, Animalities, Hara-Kiris, the hooks Fatality in the Dead Pool, the trees eating you in the Living Forest, Cyber-Reptile, and even... gasp Scorpion and Sub-Zero being brothers!
Research includes to the classic '90s Mk fansites (Ratman and the MK Hoax Page), a Move Guide on GameFAQs made by Sir Galahad, classic strategy guides by EGM, BradyGames, and Infotainment World, and finally -- some of my own previous videos, as well as comments on them left by viewers like you.

Well, back in 2017 Daniel pesina (Johnny Cage) revealed in an interview both Sub Zero and Scorpion were chinese and blood brothers from the same clan however his irl brother Carlos pesina (Raiden) didnt like the idea of two members of the same family fighting each other so John Tobias eventually decided to scrap that idea.

Even before MK Deception made the Sub-Zero/Noob Saibot thing canon, MK4's Noob Saibot was just a pallet swap of Sub-Zero with glowing eyes. It really makes me wonder if they weren't toying with the idea all the way back then, or at least were doing a sneaky homage to the rumor.

In INMK4 Gold Noob Saibot had Sub-Zero's freeze fatality. Thats where the rumor really took off.

See the funny thing is, I had the PC version where he just had Reiko's Fatalities, so I never knew that was a thing later on. That's where they sourced Noob using shuriken from later on.

Hey...no one ever mentioned of Ruby in the second-to-last episode of Defenders of the Realm; THAT can be a rumor for Skarlet, even if they'd be the same kombatant.

It’s worth noting that the Sub-Zero/Scorpion being brothers was also one of possible original concepts for the characters because Carlos and Daniel Pesina were fighting while filming their stuff for the original MK. According to Daniel, they were arguing about something, and to get them to shut up John Tobias made up that sibling rivalry thing on the spot, and for whatever reason they both stopped and listened to it and were like “that should be in the game!” I think the concept was eventually translated to Mileena and Kitana, but I guess they’re actually doing it for the OG Ninjas now!

I left this stuff out of my video, because it's going to be hard to get to the bottom of it. However, I (and others) have heard it as a playground rumor, well before any of this other stuff dropped.

I've recently spent some time thinking about MK rumors, among other things in the franchise that have crossed countries and cultures. In Colombia we also had most of those rumors (and more) floating around the streets. It was insane, some people would swear to God and their mothers they had seen/done things like MKII Animalities, the stage fatalities you covered and more. I had no idea about those pictures on the strategy guide. Do you think it can still be bought? I would LOVE to read it. So maybe, back in the mid 90s, when Internet was not that popular yet, some people from my town had the chance to see the FAQS and rumors from Google groups, as well as the strategy guide and decided to spread them all across the arcades? The topic alone is fascinating to me. And don't get me started on combos and gameplay. How those things travelled across the world, or maye it was a coincidence and some people here discovered and shaped the gameplay in the same path? beats me Anyway, great content as usual, Tabmok

I saw screenshots of MK Mythologies: SubZero. When I told some guys in school about it the one guy thought I was absolutely lying. Which I get, even I would have not believed that that was a game in itself. But the other guy had the combination for a Reptile Fatality in MKII bbdlp 😂

12:26 Well, there's another one (sort of). Dead Johnny Cage being playable in MK Trilogy was a thing, even if it was a possessed corpse instead of a ghost. I also remember rumours of the "Dragon King" being a secret final boss in MKDA. He ended up being the final boss of MKD. And a dumb rumour that never was and never could be true, but based on reality. There's a secret character in Mortal Kombat 2: Pong, Goro's dad (it appeared in the letters to the editors of the Latin American Nintendo Power, Revista Club Nintendo).

I could be wrong or maybe this was just a small rumor but I remember there was a rumor that either Kano or Sonya was playable in MK2. Obvious that was fake. I also believe in regards to MK2 that Hornbuckle being playable was a rumor or that was created way later. My favorite rumor in MK has always been the Ermac rumor. After you beat Shao Kahn in MK2 a text will appear in reverse “Ermac does not exist”

I remember that, Kano Transformations were a big rumor in MKII! I guess I could argue that it came true in MK3, as Shang Tsung could indeed morph into Kano by then!

Did mortal kombat trilogy had rumors about tremor being replaced by rain also Aqua is another rumored character we don't know to much about and who is the pink male ninja

I can tell you that Rain's original bio was he was going to be a Lin Kuei assassin, but that was changed, and he was made into an Edenian prince instead. Somehow, the manual for Mortal Kombat Trilogy on PC had his original bio instead. I'm not sure why people said it was actually Tremor's bio, though I can see the similarities. Tremor was a Black Dragon character (though he didn't dress like one). There was a conversation on Twitter that Boon has with another user, where he stated he would name a pink ninja Floyd. Pink Floyd! Get it?
