Most likely it's because of the involvement of DC. DC and Warner Bros likely weren't cool with the idea of seeing their characters being brutalized and them committing brutality (brand recognition damage and target audience conflicts, ya know) and so one of the conditions that had to be met for them to allow Netherrealm Studios to make this crossover happen was there basically couldn't be anything more than blood spilled as far as gore goes. Does seem like things are changing for the better though. The Injustice games are very dark tone wise and both The Joker and Peacemaker have made it into Mortal Kombat with no gore censorship. So we could see a remake of this that'll be way better. Who knows.

There is a lot of people that like the 3D fighting MKs, it made sense why they went that route but it was a gamble that I personally feel they ultimately loss. If MK9 was 3D then I gotta believe that would have officially killed the series. With MK9 being 2D it breathed life into its roots, I mean Street Fighter tried to do the same and it didn't work out either. It's like if Tekken 7 was 2D it might be fun or seem like a cool idea but it would lose what makes Tekken - Tekken if that makes any sense.

Similar to how some of the Fatalities in MK9 were changed for Kratos. I mean I get it, but why not just have them have Super Moves like Injustice or something maybe little more brutal like an X Ray. Maybe they still wanted something, but a lot of the Heroic Brutalities look like Super Moves that could pass in Injustice.
