To me this song is Kendrick questioning the role that so many have given him as the "savior of hiphop". That's why he has lines like "as I lead this army make room for mistakes and depression" and "how many leaders you say you needed then left em for dead?" He's saying that he's not better than you. He's also a flawed human being. He's just a mortal man, not some god that should be put on a pedestal. In a sense, he's saying that you have the power to be the leader that he's revered as being.

he originally titled the album "Too Pimp a Caterpillar" if you abbreviate it = 2pac, he changed it because he figured people would easily pick up on that.

The more Beautiful the wings The harder it is for the Butterfly to camouflage. It MUST pimp these wings to its highest benefits .or it will surely perish (Wesley snipe yo ass before 35) . Did you notice the last poem Kendrick reads each line can correlate with the meaning of each song , the whole album was the poem …a step by step guide on how…To Pimp A Butterfly (to your own benefits ) Wesley theory (The Caterpillar is forced to consume his surroundings) For Free?(The world shuns the Caterpillar) King Kunta(The Caterpillar builds resentment towards The Butterfly , everyone around him understands the transformation will begin soon, they want to leave him oblivious so they may take advantage) Institutionalized ( The Caterpillar goes to work on the cocoon ) These Walls ( the Caterpillar can no longer see past his own thoughts ) U ( The Caterpillar views the Butterfly as weak ) Alright (the Caterpillar realizes he’s trapped and accepts it’s fate ) For Sale?( new ideas start to take root ) Momma (Going home /Africa ) Hood Politics (bring back new concepts to the city or those around you ) How much a dollar Cost ( Light is now shed on things The Caterpillar never considered) Complexion ( the Caterpillar feel less stagnant, he is free to develop) The Blacker The Berry( The Wings start to emerge ) You Aint Gotta Lie(Momma Said) : Everyone around the Caterpillar starts to treat him differently, almost like he’s become someone completely different? They praise him , it’s so sudden to the Caterpillar .They shunned him his whole life , now they are lying to him/themselves. Lying to “kick it” to impress I ( Caterpillar realizes he has become a Butterfly … He takes advantage and he pimps it to his own benefits . Now everyone will listen to him , he speaks on situations of the past present and future that we need to take action on . BUT most importantly The Caterpillar now understands He and The Butterfly were always/are one in the same .) Mortal Man (The Butterfly begins to fly , looking down from the sky the butterfly notices everyone looking up to him caught in awe . They praise him , accept him. Where was this acceptance and praise when The Butterfly was the Caterpillar , what if the wings get plucked ? Would they still love him?He understands the love is conditional…it was only ever conditional…The Internal struggle ends ) DAMN! Well atleast that’s my thoughts on the album What’s yo perspective on that? Mo? ..Hood? …Mo …Hood

That's my favorite song from MMatBS, but it's everyone else's least. The lyrics are insane

It's a black power album. He is saying how easily it is for people to ride for you but also how easily people will betray you at any given word of mouth (why he brought up Michael). The last poem with Pac was to show you how we are all in a metamorphosis for change for the better and how we all are caterpillars before we can blossom into butterflies (our own person). It's a powerful album altogether and TPAB his magnum opus in my humble opinion.

Y’all both right… The spiritual talk is there cuz Kendrick references “prophets” god sent us but we left them for dead. He named Moses (a prophet) and other men like MLK, Huey Newton who led revolutions to liberate ppl (like Moses)… but he adds Michael Jackson to that list of prophets/leaders

His songs and especially this songs have several meanings. So y’all both right and it’s how the listener interrupts it for themselves

This song is like Jesus at the last supper and the garden of gethsemane. Are you loyal? Who will betray me? Im not religious, but this is a beautiful, beautiful song.

Y’all should react to that new Denzel Curry album “Melt My Eyez, See Your Future” or react to that J. Cole album - “4 Your Eyez Only” if you haven’t really listened to it like that. Or more Kendrick reactions; all of it is super dope.

Kendrick mentioned that the concept of this album is about "Leadership" cause he said ain't too many great leaders/role models left in this generation and the idea of losing more of em scared him.

For me, it sounded like less of Kendrick tryna be on this pedestal It’s more of, do you simply reject Kendrick? Or everything he’s done and said? Whether or not Kendrick is truly as he says he is. Will you reject any GOOD he’s said or done? Either in action or advice? The thing about good or bad advice? It doesn’t matter if it comes from a good or bad person. The advice is still solid And what it seems like Kendrick is really getting at. Is if you wanna stop being a fan cool. But don’t then reject everything I’ve done. When some of that helped you in your Life I gathered this as the message through a livestream Daylyt had some years back now He talked about it’s one thing if you stop following or rocking with somebody. As we all change over time. BUT, don’t reject all the Good done simply cuz you don’t like them anymore Like a spiteful ex boyfriend or girlfriend, who go out of their way to mess with you. Like really leaning into hating anything, good or bad, that you will say It’s a ‘damned if you do, damned if you don’t’ type of scenario
