Mortar Repair, 1 Hour - Easy Tuckpointing, Repointing Caulk Stops Water

See mortar repair by tuckpointing and repointing that protects your brick against water infiltration and damage.
I used QUIKRETE® Mortar Repair - gray (No. 8620-09) with a standard caulking gun. The stuff is a sanded latex acrylic that sticks to brick, block, stone and concrete. The texture and color blends with the surrounding mortar. And the square applicator tip is designed to smooth mortar joints. Puncture the tube and apply it deep into the joint, and fill from back to front. The unique square applicator tip is designed to fit between the bricks and smooth-out the caulk as it’s being applied.
Mortar joints get damaged from bad, harsh weather, mostly water and temperature changes creating and contraction, and ice. Bricks can last a century, but mortar less than 25 years.
Cleaning out decaying mortar, and tuckpointing and, repointing joints with the caulk is easy enough if you have patience and time.
Tuckpointing and repointing can’t fix cracking bricks, or wall cracks from a shifting foundation.
Remove the bad mortar and clean the joints to a depth of ¼ inch to 1 inch. You can use a screw driver, hammer and chisel, wire brush, raker bar or an angle grinder with a masonry blade.
Then clean the joint with a broom, leaf blower or even a little water.
Apply the mortar repair caulk.
Keep the applicator tip clean as well as your hands with a rag and water or you will have caulk staining everything. Be patient, and take your time. And clean the brick around the mortar line to create a clear line.
After a week, you can apply a sealer to the area, but it’s not really needed.

Keep in mind the steps may be on a sidewalk slab w/out any footing. So they will be moving differently from the porch this winter if you are in a frost zone. Spray foam first is good for big gaps.

You've probably already fixed your porch as your comment was posted 10 months ago, however, the internet is 'forever' and someone down the road might be looking for a solution to the same problem. There are several types of spray foam - all designed for different tasks, conditions and materials. Closed cell, open cell, a mixture of both, low expansion, foam specifically designed for insulating and filling CMU cells, and on and on...doing research should yield the best product to use in an exterior masonry or concrete application. Not all foam insulation holds water, as Andrew Batts stated. Mr. Hardware wins again. Just sayin'....

Some things I’ve learned. When you are doing and driving a crack make sure your caulk is stiff and use napkins and finger wipes to keep yourself clean. Keeps the smears down so wash your hands and keep you tip clean. Drive the caulk deep in the crack. I wash my finger every time I touch the cauk. . I’m 54 years ago and giggling like I’m 10. I’m a mess

👍🏾 The last thing you want to do is go into the really deep cracks with a lot of caulk left on your tip from the last usage. Always a good practice to wipe your tip off with a napkin before inserting it into the next crack. Be careful out there, folks. Happy caulking!

Very helpful! If you want to get really fussy... before hand, if you have any extra matching brick, crush up a small amount & after sealing a crack in the brick just dust the line with some of the matching crushed brick dust to cover the caulk color. 👍🏼

Thanks for the video - great job! I've used (or rather, have had someone ELSE use) mortar caulk to tuck point my brick and 10 years later it's still good as new. Now it's time for me to do it myself because the job is probably too small to hire someone. Very nice illustration and one that encourages me not to just throw it on the brick/mortar any which way. I did what you just did on my brick home last summer, but it looks like a 5 year old did the job. In any event my home was built in '46 and I'm needing to replace a few spaulded bricks. I think I can get away with just using a minigrinder (with a diamond blade) and a chisel. Any chance you can show us how to remove and replace a single brick? I see a few KZbin entries, but I suspect many of them are inaccurate. Thanks again, Mr. Hardware!

I use a carbide drill bit, 5/16 or so (so it is a little smaller than the width of the mortar joint. A longer than 4" is required because that is the depth of the brick and we want to be able to make angle holes once there are continuous holes around the suspect brick. Then you can use a plugging chisel bostwick-braun.com/search/results?terms=plugging+chisel&brandFilter=NA if you can find one. Send an email to [e-mail] or call 586-776-9532 and we'll get one to you. About $17 including shipping. A long punch will work in a pinch to beat out all the remaining mortar.

Perfect, only most homeowners have to work with smaller and simpler tools. Plus I would require hands on training before I would let an amateur use either a 10in diamond wheel or a 2in sds chisel. Your suggestion is for a seasoned mechanic, but the quickest and easiest way.

I needed this for my chimney. the Previous owners hit is with a clear, I think acrylic latex caulk, as it doesn't seem to have stood the test of time out in the elements. plus, being clear, the cracks were still very noticable. was worried I was going to need some expensive construction to fix, but I think I can handle what you demonstrated here.

I say yes. Now if you are able to mix a little mortar on the thin side you could fill all that with masonry which should last longer. Caulk is the best I can get most of my customers to use, it is too easy and keeps water out.
