I'm attempting to find a workable solution myself. My guess is that much depends on the quantity of sand in the mix and perhaps even the shape of the particles.

FYI take it from me, you'll want to be careful as you can, and to not drip mortar on your brick work. Some craftsmen refer to it as "smearing" up your masonry work. What happens is that when you smear it up and it dries, you always have a mortar haze on the face of your brick. This is O. K. if you are going to wash it with a cleaner, but you really only want to use a typical cleaner solution outdoors and then only if you know what you're doing. Brick cleaner has a kind of strong acid in it that can damage stuff and make you blind and other bad stuff. It is possible to coat the face of the brick with a resist that keeps mortar from sticking, but that kind of keeps mortar from sticking where you want it to stick. There is a learning curve.

​@@haipengxu the name is stoneselex. However, I would suggest that you find a sack of gray tile mortar, if you are adventurous, and use that to do the grout . If you have already got the thin brick, you will have the option of using a better/best tile mortar to set the brick to the substrate.

I just did my first brick veneer wall on my kitchen island and I loved it with the mortar but then I used grout. It was awful messy and I planned on white washing it anyways but after the grouting thank goodness for that. It would probably look very unprofessional to a professional but I’m still more happy with it than my original wall tbh.

only critiques i would say are, the mortar was a little wet which can cause more mess than needed, and when brushing you should always brush up and down with a slight angle forwards, otherwise you are just brushing mortar out of the joints.

Appreciate this video! I'm getting ready to redo the grout on the steps leading out the back door. The previous owner was cheap/lazy and used a clear silicone caulk. Pulled that all off yesterday, cleaned out a good amount of the loose grout. Ready to do the this part!

So outside, if it rains with in two days? Will it hurt cover it with plastic like 6 mill plastic roll? Only thing there is condensation? Any thoughts? Cause soon as I do my rock wall, even if no rain in forecast it will rain.

I am grouting brick veneer in my kitchen and bought some premix grout, but the directions say to pre wet my tiles (in my case, brick) before grouting. You didn't use any water on yours, so I'm confused on whether or not I need to wet the bricks beforehand or not? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I recently tried to repoint my brickwork using a mortar bag as per this video and it was a disaster! The mortar seemed to separate in the bag when I squeezed it and all that came out the end was a dribble of dirty water…made a right mess. I tried increasing the size of the hole but that didn’t help. I ended up pouring the mix back in the bucket and using a trowel to fill between the bricks. Not sure why but this mortar bag technique certainly didn’t work for me.

I just attempted this. The mortar has to be very thick so that it doesn't run on a vertical surface. The demo has those panels angled back so the mortar stays in.

Couldn't be more wrong lmao I install stone everyday and my butter is always wet. Go ahead and grout with dirt, bag will blow out within a hour and arm will be sore asf from struggling to squeeze dirt out

It's just practice. Get the consistancy correct and it runs easy and sticks. There is a bit of technique to squeezing it in like going bottom to top or letting ends fill up and grab the sides.

All I got to say is that if you aren't familiar with working with bricks and mortar, take whatever scraps you have and set them to a separate piece of plywood and then practice the pointing before you destroy your brick. I would even suggest that you can install the brick and hire a pro to grout it. I can almost gaga that at the very least you will need to as if wash it when you're done
